    Looks like... Duvel...

Smells like spice, clove, banana, very nice

Taste is fantastic. It's so smooth and spicy going down, this is would be really really good in the Winter for Christmas or something. I get a lot of spice and just good beer on this I don't know how to describe it other than that. It's not a big boy Belgian ale but it's pretty good stuff. It's very refreshing and the AbV is insane for how easy drinking it is

It's rare I don't hit multiple NBS beers without one of them being an IPA, and today is no exception.

This comes from an Oregon brewery I had not heard of before I bought this can last weekend:

I initially thought it was suffering from age, but other reviews aren't exactly dripping with praise. Too malty for a PNW IPA.

New Beer Sunday: New American Pale Wheat Ale with some hops showing.

Evenin' NBSers with special salutation to you supporters of American Pale Wheat Ales which actually have some full flavors from the hops.

Well last night a big storm front ripped quickly though this area but today both the temperatures and humidity were much more comfortable than they had been for the last few days. It's still fairly warm but not unpleasantly so.

After finishing the errands and lots of the chores for today it’s time to have that can of Modern Times Fortunate Islands, I mentioned earlier in the day and which is my new beer for the day.

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/31987/96436/?ba=drtth#review

Part of what I like about the American Pale Wheat Ale style is that it doesn’t have to try to imitate the Hefeweizen so there is no clove, banana, etc. This beer fits within it’s style quite nicely but would, perhaps, be viewed by many as overly hopped for the style. Personally I find the complex, but restrained, interplay of the aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, a slight wheat bread character and the low, but noticeable and persistent, bitterness to be well worth the price of admission. I enjoyed this beer and definitely would have another (if I could find one). I recommend it as a fine expression of what the American Pale Wheat Ale style can be like when having one of the full flavored versions.

Continuing on with my current passion for the music of Bach, this evening’s music on the player continues the exercise of doing some “back-to-back” listening to his Brandenburg Concertos.

So the back-to-back recordings on the player tonight are of the Bach Brandenburg Concerto #2. This is the second (duh) of the series of concertos presented by Bach to the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. (As I mentioned last week, the Margrave was wealthy enough that it was worthwhile having him as a patron of one’s work.)

    Bach Brandenburg Concerto #2

    Cheers, all!

Bad hail* last night, necessitated a search for replacement vegetables, unless I was going to accept a tomatoless, sauceless, salsaless summer, among other things. (I'm not.) Coincidentally (or not:wink:), the most likely source is about a mile from a brewery. :slight_frown::grinning:
This is Rhub Hollar, a rhubarb/strawberry cream ale. (6% abv)
This essentially tastes like strawberry-rhubarb pie in a glass, albeit less sweet - which I like.
Looks like from-scratch rhubarb pie filling, and smells like the damp, fruit-soaked, inside of the pie crust. Tastes leans more to the fruit, with a subtle touch of rhubarb, and dried strawberry, added to the pie crust flavor. There is a bit of tartness. Finishes with a tiny touch of dry, pleasant, bitterness. The feel is (surprise) creamy, with a little fine prickle, on the tip of the tongue, on the finish.

Happy 4th all, spent the day kayaking with my beautiful wife, couple lighter beers on the river, and now a heavy one to finish off.
New Glarus Scream IIPA, 9%, pours a nice slightly cloudy, two finger foamy head that settle with streams of bubbles rushing up, nice tropical aroma, hoppy but with a Carmel sweetness to balance it well. Sticky lacing coating the glass as I enjoy this brew. Very well done.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 3/4 white head over an ever so slightly hazy, light golden body with minimal lacing. Classic farmhouse nose of peppery spice, a little funk, and even a hint of smoke with some floral notes coming out as it warms a bit. Refreshing farmhouse flavors all add up to a very saison-like BPA. Okay feel and overall a great job from Frost. Cheers!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks to @cjgiant for getting us started off this week. Had a nice short stay at my parents house this weekend to celebrate my 30th Birthday(which is actually next NBS). Went to my Grandpas house and filled up on Mission BBQ and Strawberry Custard Cassata cake as well. Was amazing. The cake was my personal request, as I had always had it during my childhood for birthdays, and had not had it in over a decade probably. Turns out that style of cake is a Cleveland special that I never knew about. Will have to request it again next year. Will be happy when the salt bloat goes away lol.

Took 2 days off reviews for that visit, but now I am back at home for another round. I stopped by 2 stores on the way home and got 2 mixed cases of bombers/singles of new beers; and a couple things I wanted to revisit too. Lots of stuff I had been searching for, and other things that were just breweries I wanted to try more things from. Didn't bother doing laundry today, since I will have time to do that during the split up holiday week. Still debating whether I should telecommute to work tomorrow or actually go in. A majority of the people are going to be out. I know that only one other person in my group that will be there anyway.

    New Beers:

Awesome fruit sour! Aromas and flavors of big tart plum, peach, apricot, lemon, lime, green apple, grapefruit, orange peel, pineapple, mango, melon, red grape, hay, straw, and light pepper/musty funk; with moderate wheat/cracker malt balance; and yeasty earthiness. Moderate fruity/lactic tartness and light yeast spice/hop bitterness on the finish. Light-medium bodied; balanced lactic acid and grainy wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel. A touch of fruit tannin and hop stickiness. Moderately crisp, increasing lactic dryness, no puckering sourness. Super drinkable and refreshing! Really great balanced complexity from hops, plums, and Brett/Lacto; with great malt presence for the low ABV. Would definitely pick this up again. 4.15
    [IMG]

Great saison. Aromas and flavors of big lightly tart lemon, lime, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, pear, green apple, orange peel, white grape, peppercorn, hay, straw, floral, grass, oak, and light leathery/musty funk; moderate wheat, cracker, white bread malt balance; and yeasty earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spice; and light tartness/oak tannins on the finish. Light-medium bodied; balanced bready/grainy wheat and hop/yeast stickiness in the mouthfeel. Light acidity/tannins. Increasing spicy/tart/tannic dryness; minimal astringency. Very refreshing. As expected, spot on saison from JP. Nice Amarillo hop presence with classic saison yeast character; and a pleasant amount of the usual house funk profile without going overboard or lactic. Nice malt backbone for the ABV, very flavorful. 4
    [IMG]

Delicious IPA. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pineapple, mango, melon, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, and pine hops; with moderate honey, toasted bread, light caramel malt balance; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus rind, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Medium bodied; balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky/resinous hops in the mouthfeel. Increasing resin/rind dryness, with minimal hop astringency. Pretty aggressive, but really well made IPA (100IBU @ 7.5%, a tad excessive). Feels like Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe, and possibly Chinook hops. Really big fan, pretty classic tasting stuff. Vibrant and dank hops, balancing malts with no residual sweetness. 3.9
    [IMG]

More wild sour things. White wine barrel aged wheat ale. This was awesome! Aromas and flavors of lightly tart lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, cherry, orange peel, pear, green apple, white grape, white wine, vanilla, toasted oak, wheat, cracker and white bread; with lighter notes of peppercorn, clove, leathery/musty funk, and white wine vinegar. Light yeast/tannic oak spiciness and lactic tartness on the finish. Medium bodied; nice grainy wheat creaminess in the mouthfeel; light tannins and acidity. Lightly increasing lactic/tannic dryness. No pucker. Super flavorful and refreshing! A wild ale that drinks like a normal Belgian styled wheat beer. Nice pleasant levels of Brett funk and lacto, with great white wine barrel presence. Plenty of oaken vanilla notes. Solid Belgian yeast presence. Extremely impressive. 4.15

Bottled 6/7/2017. Poured into pint glass. It pours a medium cola color. The 3/4 finger of beige head disappeared within seconds which was disappointing. It has a fragrant aroma of cola, cherry, clove, and banana; a distinctly Belgian smell. The taste opens with fruity sweetness: a rather cloying cherry and banana, which is an unusual combination, followed by a blast of Belgian spicy funk. The finish is somewhat peppery and the aftertaste more bitter than I anticipated. It has a rich, full mouth feel for an ale, almost chewy, with a low level of combination, and the 11.1% ABV packs a wallop. Overall, this is a heavy duty American Strong Ale. Weyerbacher is proficient at brewing high ABV, high gravity ales with a Belgian twist and this one is pleasing but definitely not sessionable.

OK, New Beer Hot Sunday beer number two.

My cousin handed me a couple of these to try as I was being herded to the car by my supervisor last night. Today's hot session in the shop seemed like a good time to try one out.

12 oz. can poured into a tulip style pint glass.

In the glass it has hazy golden orange body with a fast fading one and a half inch white head. The head ends up as just a crown of micro-bubbles but it leaves nice lacing.

The nose is pretty weak, minimal wheat malt and a light fruity ester that opens up to watermelon hard candy as it warms. It tastes of wheat, slightly sweet malt and watermelon hard candy, not the actual fruit. Bitterness is very low but there is a small amount of hop character. It finishes rather clean. Mouth feel is light with medium carbonation but rather soft. There is a small amount of astringency on the tongue that comes with the finish.

This is better than I thought, refreshing and easy to drink. Although I enjoyed this it has not converted me to a fruit beer lover.

    Cheers NBS Advocates!

The pour reveals a rich brown-colored beer, and a light tan head that evaporates in seconds. The nose is rich weisse beer - banana, clove, and a nice amount of funky yeast. Magnificent nose.

The taste has the banana and clove up front, and the yeast guides this into a smooth landing, with the feel providing the effervescence you want on a steamy Texas evening. Well done by SN and Ayinger.

Greetings All from the Great Northwest where it is not all that hot. The thermometer never passed 89 today. I spent most of the 1980's in the desert southwest, so I do not consider it hot until we get into the 90's. I'll take all the hot weather you have. I'll take 90 degrees over 20 degrees any day. And here we have both at times of the year.

Today we have the last of a Sam Adams summer sampler White Citra IPA.

Victory Brewing - Blackboard Series #5 - Cream Ale With Cold Brew Coffee
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    ------------

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass.

Slightly opaque body, with a unique mix of colors. Ranges from dull orange, touches of chestnut brown, and even bright lemon yellow. Head creation is a little flat, barely making half a finger, but managing to stay in a simple tall if soapy thin puck.

Small notes of coffee, and a touch of fruity bean quality. Slight hint of spice as well, not sure if it's malt or hop angle or the beans itself. Cream ale sweetness not so much present, or noticeable, but a decent fine smelling brew.

Fairly simple palate. Light bodied with a touch of mellow sweetness. Hints of milky coffee and also a good fruity bean. A sharp spice perhaps touching herbal hop qualities on the finish. A nice lingering vanilla sugar character, which doesn't come off like lactose either. Coffee character is fairly mellow but subtle and goes well with the base sweet malt body.

This comes off more as a sweetened coffee pale ale, and fairly decent. Interesting if a bit odd brew.

This is pretty cool - rich copper color, very light tan head, caramalt dominates the nose, but some fruity hops peak through, which portends good things to come.

Those fruity hops lead the taste, but the caramalt never leaves the room. This 4.5% ABV beer has loads of flavor, and some body as well. A very nice offering by a local brewery here in McKinney.

PS: the beer is good, the goblet is world-class. King Arthur would be proud of this goblet.
