Deschutes Abyss Cognac Barrel-aged Stout, 12% ABV, 86 IBU. Pours black with a slight head. Nose is sweet cognac, soy sauce, and moleasses. Taste follows, not much sweetness, licorice, a bit of bitterness, even a bit salty. Dry, excellent mouthfeel. Overall excellent.

Lesson learned; don't sniff a beer while trying to watch football. Took a nice snort of BA stout, now that's all I smell!

Looks likes 24 oz mountain to me. If I had two I'd pop it no questions, but timing is everything sometimes. Still on the fence though.

What is this, open mike night (or morning) at the NBS Bar??

@lordofthewiens might be able to use some of that when he hosts NBS #666. I would push for keeping it simple, choosing a beer with a devil or hellish theme. Or, if we want to be really brazen, a Helles theme. The Helles lager (and it's cousin Helles Bock) are not styles most people (though there are quite a few on this thread) find themselves getting into. Encouraging a choice of what may be a "newer" style to many seems as though it checks a couple boxes for this thread.

Regardless, I think some creative minds will come up with some good ideas for the theme. After all, I am guessing many will be coming off or still visiting extended family that week. For quite a few, that may be a devil of a situation to start from, so maybe it will lead to darker, devlish thoughts and some good posts.:innocent:

Anyone else feel free to chime in! I'm almost ready to actually truly participate in this thread.

I've lived all over Philly, but this is my favorite spot. Fairmount is hard to beat! And I can walk to my school from here, so there's that.

NBS Entry #2 is a beer I missed out on on my first trip to Ohio a little over a year ago. I was very pleased to run into it on my Columbus day weekend trip.

L-The beer pours a beautiful clear gold with a 2 finger off white head. Lacing is superb with a curtain following a slow descent into the beer leaving excellent legs behind.
S-The nose is bitter grapefruit, a bit of cattiness, and a bit of pine.
T-Grapefruit is the dominant flavor right off the jump. Bitterness is moderate and slightly piney.
F- Carbonation is light but prickly. Mouthfeel is slick and combined with the carb leaves it feeling medium overall.
O-A very good DIPA, but perhaps a little overrated. Nonetheless I'd drink this one again without hesitation.

Of course!! If we're not spreading the love, why are we doing it?

Okay, finally going to chime in with an actual new beer in my hand (well, the last few sips of it). Speaking of spreading the love, @Buck89 did so with this beer (and a few others, one of which may last to NBS #666) when he visited our area a couple weeks ago. We discussed the similarities in the operations and products of Bearded Iris and Aslin. Today's beer is definitely one I wouldn't question if someone wrapped an Aslin can around it:

Catalyst is what I would consider a juicy NE IPA that isn't overly fruity. The mostly tropical fruit notes are the most noticeable, but they are tempered by a mostly clean bitterness. There is a little herbal note in the nose that isn't noticeable in the taste. The alcohol is also more noticeable in the nose, and comes off as slightly spicy in the back of the taste.

This is right in line with what I got used to from our local NE DIPAs. It's more approachable to those who don't like a big bitter side to their beers, and even more to those who like the fruity aspect that hopping techniques can bring to a beer.

    G' afternoon NBS-ers! Thanks for the start @cjgiant !
Gonna go with a local Florida brewery, before I hit up some more of those NBS BIF beers.
    Pair O' Dice Lowball IPA
    [IMG]

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a Teku glass. No date on can.

Appearance: Light amber to golden orange body with a thin white head, that leaves some nice lacing in the glass.

Aroma: All citrus; orange and grapefruit rind and a plenty of lemon.

Taste/Mouthfeel: First sip reveals all of that Mosaic hop, citrus bomb! This is just like drinking a glass of fruit juice. That 5% abv makes this one a great session IPA, light and supwer crushable. Decent amount of bitterness and grapefruit pith that lingers after each sip.

Overall: A pleasant surprise with this one. Plenty of hoppiness and body to this one even for a sessionable beer, will definitely be buying more of this in the future.

    Cheers!

    Happy 20th Anniversary Rock Art!

Me, I'm super glad they brewed something so good as this.

The aroma had a fantastic orange to grapefruit juiciness throttling a livid little zesty hop spice forward with a little bit of grassy sweetness. Malt plays a nice sweet balance, but I have to admit - still is a bit low key as it warms.
The flavor was juicy sweet through the orange and grapefruit juice. Full orange to grapefruit juicy aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fine sipping quality about it. Carbonation, like most New England styled DIPA's is under, but I'm not bothered by that, just something I've come to accept. ABV felt as projected by the brewer. Super juicy finish with little to no harshness.
Overall, for a brewery that has been doing this longer than most and still going, I have to admit that Rock Art still has what it takes to compete. I'd definitely have again.

    Commonwealth Brewing Big Papi

An East Coast DIPA dressed up as an NEIPA, at least that's what the casual observer may note. Delve deeper to reveal a nose that screams Mosaic (didn't look, but really hope that's it...) with all it's shallot dankness and what not, while labouring through is some small measure of citrus sweetness. Taste confirms the nose, as garlic, tangerine and sweet prevail with just a hint of sweetness that is actually masking a little heat. Finishes fairly clean, as maybe some alcohol in the after taste, little else.

    Happy New Beer Sunday Everyone!

Today's new beer is one that I have been putting off buying for a while now. Finally made some fridge space and decided to pick this one up.

Cigar City Brewing's Guayabera - Citra Hopped Pale Ale - Canned 9/26/17

So damn glad I finally bought this beer because it's amazing! Pours out a beautiful light orange with golden hues and a slight haze. Tons of dank citra hops on the nose, very bright and floal with a lovely biscuity malt profile. Taste exactly as you would expect based on the nose. Body is med and has a nice smooth texture.

Very well made beer! Exactly would I like in a Hoppy Pale and an amazing showcasing of Citra hops!

    Cheers!

    Lord Hobo - Boom Sauce

I have to say, I'm a bit confused. This is meant to be a New England (D)IPA, yet it's not even remotely hazy, or fruity. The cans I got were just 8 days old so freshness was not an issue. It pours a pretty clear amber with about 2 fingers worth of a dense head. The aroma is mainly of malts (rather than hops, which are mostly piney and herbaceous). The taste is fairly well balanced but the best feature of this beer is the late dank aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium and with very little in terms of a carbonation bite. A nice beer but not what I was expecting from a so called NEIPA.

A-A hazy golden color with a no head or lacing.
S-Slight sour scent of peaches and cherries.
T-Slight tartyness with a sour funk but very smooth.
    M-Medium bodied, smooth and slick.
O-Very well done sour, with great balance and character.

Deserted Village BBA Imperial Stout with added flavors on vanilla, and coffee 10.1% ABV from Twin Elephant. I prefer my Imperial Stouts and BBA aged Imperial Stouts without added flavors but drank this with an open mind. I'm glad I did because this is a nice beer. The brewery states this beer spent 4 months in a "fresh" 4 Roses barrel that had aged Bourbon for 9 years. Not sure what that means but this brew is a Bourbon bomb and the other added flavors are over powered. It's a enjoyable beer but wish the brewery had just brewed a Plain Jane Imperial Stout and aged it in that barrel.

My wife fell into four of these and brought it to me.
Poured to a tulip from a can dated 9/22.
Appearance is pulp free pineapple juice with reasonable head that fades in a few minutes.
Aroma- fruit (no duh) apricot, ripe pear, sweetness.
Taste is apricot front, bitter hops in the middle (bitter=good) malt finish.
Mouth feel is full (maybe psychological due to appearance).
    Great NEIPA.
Been drinking a lot of 2-Juicy lately and I couldn't help notice the similarities. Went to the fridge to set up a non-blind comparison.
Head to head the 2J leans to pineapple taste and the V to apricot. 2J slightly thinner, V slightly maltier (yes, really, not much malt but some presence compared to 2J).
Both great, I would take either at any venue, but if both offered, Trillium due to availability to me.
One more pic- The V has some great label art, Trillium website says its all about an oyster bar "in the vicinity".

Happy Sunday NBS players. Just a picturesque fall day here on the island. Cool, but nice and warm in the sun. All the foliage is changing colors and starting to drop at an increasing rate with every passing day. Took a nice walk this morning to enjoy the weather and I've been watching football all afternoon. The Jets are looking good and it's a nice feeling to actually expect a win against the crap fish. I actually have the next few days off from work too so I can plan on having a few new beers today.

My first new beer today is Flavorful Five, a double ne style ipa, from Roak brewing. This of course came my way from the great ba known as @superspak and his NBS bif #6 box. The brew checks in at 9.2% abv, 80 IBU, has a canning date of 9/1/17, and features el dorado, citra, galaxy, amarillo, and azacca hops.

A hazy pour with an off-orange color and fluffy white head. Very creamsicle looking. The nose is rather floral with sharp citrus fruit and slight alcohol burn. A rather tangy and bitter start upfront on the first few sips. A soft, plush, and creamy flow with a bitter finish. The mouth feel is full bodied with a mixed feel between the fruity hop bitterness and creaminess. The abv does not hide at all and seems to hit the palate hard on every sip. Good fruit notes of tangerine, orange, mango, grapefruit, and melon. Additional hope notes of pine, spcie, and even a bit dank.

Overall, a bit different for the style given it's abv but it seems to work well enough. I'm right around a 4 here.
