if you haven't checked it out, Cornell's ornithology department has a fine bird ID app that also uses user supplied photos to help ID birds...it's called Merlin and is available for Android and Apple...then again, a good hardcopy of Sibley's can be a god send to the birding enthusiast...

Just got home (safe!) from my 6th barrel pick in 2 years at WhistlePig Distillery in Shoreham, VT. I drove, and one of my passengers (and fellow taster) promised he would drive the next time (hour and a half drive, one way.) I probably drank one third of the whiskey they drank and three times as much water as they drank. We were also very lucky to try every barrel treatment of their rye whiskey they had including: chablis, chardonnay (fantastic!), a couple sherries, amarone, and a few others; but there was one rye finished in a wood barrel made from the Amburana tree of South America which was amazing. Think of Dogfish Head Palo Santo and the giant foudre made from the Palo Santo tree of South America in which they age that beer. That wasn't the best as we were extremely honored to try the next edition (#5) of the Boss Hog series, named "The Spirit of Mauve" named after the recently deceased matriarch of their sty. This 14 year old rye was finished in Calvados barrels and is one of the best ryes I've ever tasted.

Anyway, I'll be into a bit of beer aged in wood this evening.

    Cheers!

Indians opening day IPA. Awesome stuff! Fantastic head retention/soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, melon, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honeyed malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Some resins/rinds, light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very drinkable, not overly aggressive, 7%. Chinook, Centennial, and Citra. Awesomely balanced juicy, vibrant, dank, and earthy hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, with minimal residual sweetness. Loved the hop profile as expected. 4.13

Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness; and fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Some resins and fruit tang/tannins/acidity. Light-moderate increasing tart/bitter dryness. No hop/fruit astringency. Very smooth and pretty refreshing. 6.3%. Not overly aggressive. Simcoe and Citra hops. Very juicy and fairly dank hop/fruit complexity; nice bready malt backbone, mild lingering sweetness. Really well done. Not overdone on any aspect. 4
