Time for New Coffee Saturday, courtesy of @FFFjunkie .

Dark Matter Blood Lord BBA Espresso

Appearance: small, dusty brown beans. In the glass, it's a reddish hue. Methinks I didn't use enough grounds this first batch around. Fortunately for me, I love coffee, so making another few cups isn't going to make me sad. :grinning:

Aroma: wow! Just the beans dutifully sitting in my grinder give off a room-filling sweet bourbon aroma. The brewed result is more tame, blending a bitter dark roast with notes of chocolate and berries with the bourbon and oak.

Taste/Mouthfeel: well, I didn't taste this before I brewed it - maybe I should have! It's sweet, especially for black espresso, and it's a little weak (my fault), but it's very good. Berries, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and of course, it still tastes like coffee. As a contrast to "flavored" coffee, it's less sweet and more restrained; despite seeming kind of like a gimmick, it doesn't taste like a gimmick. Relatively short finish, although barrel notes linger on the tongue for quite some time.

I love coffee, and I particularly love dark roasts, including espresso (brewed both as espresso, and as a standard cup of coffee). This is a wonderful gift, Dan. Thank you!

Reminds me of one of my favorite Butch Hancock lines, a calling card of mine, almost:
"I'm accused of things I never did do,
    but would have
if I'd have thought about 'em first."

Off to Charlotte and Resident Culture to hunt and drink beer for the day, a bit of a late start, bad weather this morning. Hope it's raining in Charlotte too, spread out the people and make them late too.

Pending attack hint #3: you are probably cold right now. Why is it so cold there in October? I couldn’t do it.

Sleeted here last night 20 miles north had snow actual covering of everything. Usually we don't see that until end of month. Not the beginning

It's a struggle man, and it always seems like these BIFs line up juuuuuust perfectly with when I'm finally starting to make a concerted effort...
That would mean an AVERAGE of 53 bottles shipped per person, including all 32 members of the BIF. When I first did that math it seemed high, but then I stopped to think about it a second and... well you might not be that far off...
I too can't stand lines. In general. On principle. There's a restaurant around town that's supposed to have the most incredible handmade pasta, but they're only open for like three or four hours a day and don't take reservations, so there is invariably a line every day to get in (it's also right downtown). I've been debating back and forth about whether to do that for my birthday coming up... on the one hand, one of my least favourite things in the world (standing in lines for the privilege of giving someone my money) on the other hand one of my favourite things in the world (noodles)... dilemma...
    Yeah, he'll do that...

After enjoying some of the very fine coffee Dan sent my way, I'm going to break into my second new beer from the box. Appropriately, I'm going after Hipster Brunch Stout, a beer I've often seen on the forums, and now finally have the opportunity to try.

BLUF: This is very good, and very enjoyable. I love breakfast stouts; I love coffee; I love BBA stouts. What's not to love here?

At the end of my review, I compare this brew, individually, to the three Funky Buddha brews more or less in the same category (including MBCP, which arguably kicked off the popularity of this niche style). To give you the Cliff's Notes version: I like all of the FB offerings slightly better (MBCP, Wide Awake It's Morning, and Morning Wood), but they're all different from this one.

Hipster has more bacon, first off. It's also noticeably less sweet than the imperial offerings from FB. Translation: it may be preferable for some palates, just depending on how sweet you want your breakfast stout. As far as the bourbon (compared to Morning Wood), it's more subtle in Hipster, but it still adds a nice component to the overall profile, especially on the nose.

Thanks again for this amazing box, Dan. Tomorrow should be fun!

You're wearing it to the bottle share too, right?
It's not my misery, but I've always been the curious sort.
Yeah, but think of the lifetime savings...
