Good afternoon again on this fine NBS and as promised I have return with my mystery beer from @Ozzylizard. My beer has the plain brown wrapper with chilling instructions and enjoy on the wrapper.
Beer poured a light golden color in my glass with a thin white head that disappeared quickly.
The nose sets the picture tart with a mild salt in the picture. There is something else I'm getting perhaps mild cucumber but sour.
The taste is all there. It's a Berliner Weiss for sure salty and tart very crisp. The other flavor is shadowed by the saltiness very mild still thinking cucumber maybe a fresh pickle very mild.
The mouthfeel is spot on for a Berliner nice carbonation and very clean.
All in all a good Berliner perhaps a little saltier than I really like but still drinkable and would be really nice on an 80 degree day.
I have no idea to the brewery or where this is from but I'm sure on the style of it. So on to the reveal.
Okay so we have here is PKL FKR from The New Braunfels Brewing Co. A Berliner refermented with pickle juice. Thanks again Ozzy this was a fun beer. This beer in my book should be like a 3.85 range.

Different strokes. It's interesting how different people approach the same problem (in this case, rating to style against personal preference) differently.

    New Glarus Serendipity

Today’s next new beer again comes courtesy of @brutalfarce in NBS BIF Nein. He also gave me the Cherry and Raspberry beers from New Glarus, both of which were phenomenal.

This one pours a very reddish, murky, tea-like color with a finger of red-tinted, light tan head that quickly settles into a soupy crown. It clings to the side of the glass, and leaves a little webbed lacing.

Apple, cranberry and cherry shine in the nose. Super juicy and ripe, as expected. It’s a very nice blend with the cherry laying a nice base and the apple and cranberry balancing each other out on top of that.

Wow, the first sip is really tart tasting up front (Granny Smith and cranberry), and shockingly sweet on the backend. Apple juice definitely shows more in the taste than in the nose, but with both the cranberry and cherry still very distinctive. There’s a very slight medicinal element to the aftertaste.

It’s full bodied and slick feeling with very fizzy carbonation.

Another delicious fruit-and-field beer from these guys. Belgian Cherry was my favorite of the bunch, but each of the ones I’ve been lucky enough to try thanks to William have been excellent. These are the only New Glarus I’ve had other than some Spotted Cows 15+ years ago, and I now very much get what all the hype is about.

    Cheers. :beers:

So today has not gone as planned at all. Missed the golf tournament on tv but got to listen in the radio, which is nowhere near as good. I had planned on cracking the 4D sent to me from the very generous BA @strohme2 in the NBS BIF, but this will have to do for now as I have dinner plans for my monster mother in laws birthday. But with GOT on tonight I might get another chance. Justin I can’t thank you enough for the boxes that have already graced my porch and can say you should expect return fire, but can’t say when. Now on the the beer

This one sparks joy - a collab between foundation and old nation

Poured into a glass also gifted to me by @strohme2

The appearance is actually much lighter than the picture above shows. The body is more of a bright golden orange although the opaqueness is captured well. Moderate amount of pretty stark white head with about a minute retention time. The nose on this one is LAAAARGE, as some here like to say. Tons of overripe tropical fruits on the nose, mango, pineapple, maybe a little peach. Hops flowing freely underneath. More of the same on the taste, which is right up my alley. Some sweetness from the fruits at first, however the hop burn is accompanied by some bitterness. Taste is more subdued than the nose, but in this case maybe is more restrained than subdued. It’s not quiet, but nowhere near as loud as the nose. Some hop burn on the finish. The finish is quicker than a hiccup, leaving you wondering where the flavor went and quickly seeking another sip. Mouthfeel is a teeny bit heavier than medium bodied, but soft and has the slightest hop burn before it disappears completely. Overall this is great but I can already tell it will disappear too quickly and I would definitely drink it again!

Goses Are Red, a Gose brewed with grapes, salt and coriander, then aged in oak foeders, by American brewery Bruery Terreux (5.3% ABV)

Pours a clear, rosé coloration with a large, foamy, quickly dissipating head and visible carbonation. Smells of light doughy wheat malt, tart red grapes and hints of lime peel, coriander and sea salt, as well as well as some light, earthy funk.

Taste is a great balance of light, doughy wheat malt, a strong, tart red grape character and lighter notes of raspberry, lime peel and sea salt, with just a hint of coriander, earthy funk and oak. Finishes quite dry, with a medium tartness and some red grapes, sea salt and lime peel lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a ligh/medium body and medium/strong carbonation.

While this almost too complex for a classic Gose, the subtle balance of flavors is still rather impressive. Everything seems measured perfectly and blends together very well without any particular element spiking out too much. Complex, yet easy-drinking, very enjoyable.

I must ask purely out of curiosity: you mentioned taste specifically, but was that an example and do you tend to lean all non-overall categories that are borderline towards personal preference?

Note: not trying to start any “controversy,” as our ratings are often pretty similar. Plus you at least you leave a review to explain your ratings

[IMG] Curiosity 63 pours a very hazy yellow orange with a solid finger sticky white head that leaves loads of thick webs of lace as it slowly settles, canned on 4/5/19. 5

Smell is pineapple, guava, honey dew melon, and some grapefruit rind. 4.75 Awesome

Taste follows just an amazing juicy and tropical NEDIPA! Pineapple, guava, melon, and just the smallest amount of bitterness from grapefruit. 4.75 Outstanding!

Mouthfeel is soft with the perfect amount of life, stick from the fresh hops, and at 8.3% ABV really drinks easy! 5

Overall this is just another amazing NEDIPA from probably the best in the business and a brewery that is just absolutely slaying it! 4.75

Congrats for the various celebrations. My Dad's birthday is ten days before my parents' wedding anniversary (their 50th this yr!). I'm convinced he talked my Mom into that date so that it'd be close enough to his birthday to help him remember their anniversary date.

Another from @Coronaeus. I always am up for a new German Pils. Not sure what the bottle code means, there is no dating. This was awesome. Fantastic fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing on the glass. Crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of big lemon cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; with moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery hops. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Slight lingering resins. Moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Perfectly clean on lager flavors, no fruity/yeasty notes. Very flavorful/refreshing, not watery for 4.8%. Perfectly balanced super clean pils malts and earthy noble hops(Hallertau?). No residual sweetness from crisp dryness. Amazing style example all around. Loved it. 4.13

I will say that, taking "dank" for a specific example, it doesn't bother me as much on the nose as it does the palate. In that case, I don't feel I need to compromise between my personal preference and the quality of the beer - although it can naturally foretell a flavor profile that's not to my liking.

I use "Overall" as my catch-all, my adjudication of the beer to style, and if necessary, a wildcard to even out my temperamental ratings. Primarily to style, though.

Another good example would be the NE IPA style. If it's absolutely filled with disgusting floaties (Beer'd's Stunner for the Win, or any IPA/DIPA by Foreign Objects, for recent examples from my history), I find it difficult to rate the beer at 4.0 - and certainly not much higher. It's just not attractive. (I adore Westy 12, but gave the appearance a 3.75, for another example.)

It's not that they're poorly made, or not true to style ... but if I were looking at the beer, is it attractive?

For me, appearance and texture are huge. I can gag while sipping a beer based on floaties that, otherwise, you'd never know are present based on the experience on your palate. So it matters to me, but knowing that, I also recognize that it doesn't mean the beer is bad, necessarily. "Overall" is where I try to catch up on impressions (look, smell, taste) that may not be right up my alley, but aren't indicative that the beer is flawed - and, on the contrary, may be exceptionally well brewed within the style guidelines.

I love these kind of discussions; I don't see it at all as contentious.

Greetings fellow NBSers and all you other benevolent, irreverent, indelicate, indecorously reckless, reclusively restive, and argumentably inveterate lovers of great beer, from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY.

    I. Am. Still. Alive. This is the size of it for me today, as there were moments during the work week that I doubted I would be here to type this sentence. I am out of retirement as a favor to my town, and to my friend Rich who is now playing with only one kidney and a current diagnosis of no cancer in his body. No good deed goes unpunished. There are many things on ground at the Center, without pallets, or under tarps, but I was careful about what went to ground, and if DEC were to come (they won't) I don't think we get one violation. The work involved in doing this was fucking nuts, and I presently am a bag of shit, as we say locally to describe this level of exhaustion. This is why God invented beer

A rare recommend from my favorite beer guy. When G recommends something I always buy. Foreign Objects Ritual Colors.

Pours a cloudy white gold with thin finger of light beige foam atop for a moment. Spotty lace, thick ring, and skim islands hang on for the ride.

Light/med. aroma, I get sweet melon and crisp grain, not much else, kinda disappointing.

Taste is thankfully stronger, it's med. strength, a bit sweeter than anticipated, but also that simple melon and crisp grain of the nose. Also present are some vegetal undernotes, and there is a strong herbal bitter finish to this that is incongruous.

Mouthfeel is very good, nice med. carb. very soft on palate, good viscosity with no resin buildup, and a pretty clean finish.

I can see what G likes in this beer, as it is very well put together, and refreshing for its size, but the aroma is weak, and the flavor profile is of flavors that don't get along well. Pass.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

I think one of their other Pilsners will drop before I get your next box out. I’ll include it if it does. Bellwoods doesn’t date, but their beer is only available at the bottle shop and that one was probably bottled about two-three weeks ago. Sorry about the gushing and the heartburn on the Small Pony.

Nice frothy beige head doesn’t hide the wonderful aroma jumping from this beer. Dates, almond, vanilla and bakers chocolate in nearly equal parts with only a split second of heat as it tapers off. As it heats up, a bit more alcohol is boiling off, therefore masking some of the initial characteristics just slightly. Taste is solid throughout temperature changes as it starts with chocolate, leans towards vanilla a bit until finally the alcohol wins out as the finishing taste. Upon exit a little sweetness lingers on an otherwise dry tongue.

Well another Sunday another rainy day. Was able to get out briefly and then hit the elliptical heavy to clear the cobwebs. So Im ready for a beer. Thanks to @lordofthewiens for the startup.
Of course today is reveal day for BIF # 9. Im ready to dig into @WesMantooth incredibly generous box(s) of beer.
Starting with a trio of mystery beers.
    Beer#1
Pours a golden clear with a snow white head. The head is foamy and short lived. There is little to no lacing.
Aroma is of white grape, some clove/bubblegum, fresh grass, floral notes and yeast.
Taste is lemon, gooseberry/white grape, biscuit, some nuttiness, and peachy notes.
Feel is light bodied, crisp, very dry with tingly small bubble carbonation throughout.
This beer is very wine like in its qualities and quite tasty. If this is not a brut IPA I will be shocked. But Im not unwrapping this until all three are complete! Thanks Corey![IMG]

First beer of the day, taking it easy because I have a lot of Game of Thrones themed beers saved up for tonight! Bass in Your Face from Interboro (2019 Remix). Smells of melon and citrus. Body's on the lighter side with just a touch of oat thickness. Almost everything is doubles these days so it can be odd going back to a slightly lighter IPA. Taste is lightly bitter pine and grass. It wasn't my favorite on the first sip but I warmed up to it after a few ounces. Centennial is one of those slightly odd hops that I'm not always sure what to make of. I quite enjoyed this though! Interboro never disappoints and I get to try them so rarely. Thanks so much @MacMalt!

Pouring this beer from a 12 oz. can into a snulip glass, this beer pours out like a thick sunny d; bright orange. It forms a pinky width of white, creamy crown that leaves slight lacing.

Before even putting my nose to the glass, I smell juice. It’s a really delightful, clean juice. A lot like sunny d itself. Clean and bright citrus presence; like orange juice, tangerine.

The taste follows suit well. This thing is a little one dimensional with the citrus juice, but it’s so good at what it does, that you can’t fault it for it. Sunny d just keeps coming to mind. So clean.

The mouthfeel has a slight and balanced citrus tang to it. It’s soft, somewhat creamy; but not a hugely thick creamy and clean all the way through.

Overall, man I see why this thing is a legend. As previously stated, it’s a little one dimensional, but that one dimensional is awesome. And every aspect of it is screaming clean, from the front to the back, the looks to the feel. This thing is hotter than my first pistol that I bought in the hood when I was 15.

    Thanks a lot man!

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Samplers and commentators. This is an amazing beer time in New Jersey. Beers that we only dreamed of, or had to trade for, only months ago are now available in neighborhood bottle shops. Within the past few weeks, Toppling Goliath, Modern Times, and Jacks Abby have appeared on our shelves. At the same time, there seems to be a new brewery within easy driving distance opening almost monthly. What's a conscientious BA to do? Try to drink 'em all, I guess.

My review today is Rahway or the Highway, an 8.8% American Imperial Porter brewed by Wet Ticket Brewing in Rahway, NJ. Like most new brewers, Wet Ticket can be inconsistent. It's known for its Kölsch and for a couple of well-received IPAs. This is the first dark beer I've had from the brewery, and I'm impressed. It's mostly a bitter, charred Porter (which I like) but with just enough coconut and vanilla to be interesting. It doesn't drink like it's adjunct-laden. There is also a nice hint of bourbon barrel. I get so excited when a local brewer produces a beer of this quality. Here's my full review:

    4.07/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Reviewed shortly after bottle release. Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Wet Ticket pint glass at slightly below room temperature. It pours an oily, inky black with dark walnut hues at the bottom of the glass, and a large, fluffy, light khaki-colored head and a creamy film of lacing. On the nose there is roasted malt, chocolate, coconut, vanilla, char, and just a hint of bourbon. The taste opens with some sweetness: coconut, vanilla, and baker's chocolate, but it quickly becomes quite bitter with abundant earthy char, burnt nuts, tobacco ash, and a pleasant hint of bourbon, which adds to the flavor without being boozy. One thing I really like is that the coconut and vanilla are fairly delicate and it doesn't taste like it's loaded with adjuncts. For a Porter it has a creamy, viscous mouth feel with a low level of carbonation, and at 8.8% it's a substantial brew. Overall, this is nicely done. It's my first dark beer from Wet Ticket and I wouldn't hesitate to try another.

I hope you're all enjoying your new beers today. As always, the reviews are informative and fun. Cheers, NBS!
