New Beer Sunday: American Pale Ale (APA)

Afternoon NBSers with a recommendation for folks in SE PA who are APA fans and seeing 3 Floyds beers for the first time in our area.

While prepping the fixings for some black bean burritos to have as part of dinner tonight, this afternoon’s new beer is the 3 Floyds Space Station Middle Finger.

My review, in progress, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/26/91358/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are in a very nice balance with the hops and malts both sharing center stage. There’s some caramel and tropical fruits, including a touch of melon and some lychee. The light citric zest tinged bitterness is present and noticeable but not obtrusive. After the fruit flavors and sweetness begin to fade the bitterness recedes more slowly as it moves to the back of the palate where it slowly disappears. This is not your father’s APA and I’ll be looking to have more.

    Cheers

Next up is one I had a sample of yesterday while visiting with @Buck89 at southern Grist and got this crowler to go.

    Hoppy Timbs

Color is a dense, murky, opaque golden yellowish orange with billowing eggshell white head which has great retention and lacing after the fact. The scent reminds me of some tired hands and other half brews I have had from @CanConPhilly . Pungent overripe fruits and cheese radiate from the glass. I think you would love this one Matt. They didn’t have cans or I would definitely send you some. More of the same on the taste with a little sweetness and a little bitterness to back it up. Mouthfeel is more than medium, soft, pillowy, all that jazz. Overall good NE style ipa from my favorite Nashville brewery.

Smell is clove, banana, lime, and a hint of mint. 3.75

Taste follows banana, clove, clove, lime, and a tiny amount of mint. 3.75

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, subtle carbonation, a touch dry, and drinks bigger than 5.8% ABV. 4.25

Overall this is a very nice Saison, I could sipnthis from time to time. 3.75

I think it’s only him that picks up the meats. It’s kinda danky cheese. It’s a fine line I think. On second thought maybe he wouldn’t like it. To me it’s very close to the stuff tired hands does with the sweet overripe fruits. Not my favorite SG brew but it’s pretty good.

Yuengling Golden Pilsner This beer has been around for about a year. I'm not much of a Yuengling fan so I hadn't tried it until this past week. A pleasant surprise a nice enjoyable brew. It pour a beautiful bright gold with a thick white head that is GTTW quickly. The aroma is mild some bready malt and some hops. The mouthfeel is light the finish id dry. Overall a pretty nice enjoyable beer. If you think of this beer as a Pilsner it not a very good one. If you consider it as A an AAL (which IMO is what it is) it's a very good one in fact one of the best.
A second new beer. Russian Imperial Stout from Untied Brewing in New Providence NJ a local. Many of the small breweries around me brew RIS's but can't resist adding flavors to them. I prefer that plain jane just H2O,Malt, Hops and yeast. Untied split their batch 5 barrels plain jane , 5 barrels to play with. That did a fine job with the plain jane. 10.5 %ABV it pours jet black with a nice brown long lasting head. Very strong roasted malt aroma. The taste is the same strong roasted malt and the ABV is hidden. The mouthfeel is full and the finish is dry. Overall a excellent RIS. By far the best beer they have brewed in there short history.

Good afternoon NBSers, the wife decided she wanted to just hang around the house today and chill, I am cooking her supper tonight. I am opening and sharing a few beers with her, this one came from @thebeers in a recent BIF. Sunny Day a DDH DIPA from Little Log Cabin, Arthur said these guys are an offshoot of Tired Hands and this beer is excellent. The 9% ABV is not labeled on the can and you cannot pick it up in the beer either, well balanced easy drinking DIPA.

Appearance 4.5 - pours opaque deep orange with a nice fluffy white head that settles pretty quickly to a thick ring.

Aroma 4.25 - Getting some big sweet tropical fruit, mild onion, little bit of grass. Cold no sign of the alcohol but it shows just a bit as it warms some.

Taste 4.25 - Right up front I get some orange/tangerine I expected it to be pretty sweet based on the lactose sugar but once the initial tropical fruit passes it quickly changes to a nice bitterness with citrus peel and grapefruit.

Feel 4 - Pretty creamy nice soft carbonation, slightly dry finish.

Overall 4.24 - I really like the NEIPAs that have some balance to them, this one is very well balanced. I almost for got about the 9% alcohol there is no sign of it.

    Hello, Hello
That’s the new beer I’m drinking, not a salutation. But hello everyone as well!
New DIPA from River Roost in White River Junction VT. One of my favorite spots. Drinking this at Big Fatty’s which is in same parking lot as the brewery.

Hazy and bright orange beer with thin cover of foam. Foam settles down into tiny floating bubbles and thin collar.

Aroma bursts with citrus and fruity hops. Grapefruit zest and ripe sweet fruit. Can’t pinpoint the fruit, but tropical and lightly sweet.

Flavor is fruity and layers of citrus juice and zest. A bit of sweet fruit salad but balanced nicely with a bit of grain and background bitterness.

Soft and smooth with out a hint at the 8.2% ABV. Moderate carbonation and medium body.

Another great River Roost brew. I stopped at the brewery to grab their new edition of their BA stout series Rhythm of the Night.

I’ll add this brew to BA when I get home and can use laptop instead of computer

My first Mystery Beer, yay ! I always loved the idea of these, many thanks @gavinbrooksbank for giving me the opportunity to participate.

Pours a clear golden coloration with a medium, fluffy head and visible carbonation. So the look is not too unusual, could be anything, really, let's see how it smells.

Things getting a lot more interesting here, with a very unusual aroma that I'm pretty sure is juniper, actually. I'm also getting some spices from this, like clove and possibly elderberry, along with some soft, doughy malts and a hint of grass and citrus. Definitely has a kind of gin botanical aroma to it.

Taste does follow the nose with those gin botanical notes dominated by juniper, as well as perhaps clove and elderberry. While the herbs and spices do dominated this quite a bit, there's still some soft, doughy, crackery malts and hoppy notes of citrus and grass poking through as well, with just a hint of yeast esters. Finishes quite dry, with the herbs and spices lingering in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is sparkly and effervescent, with strong carbonation.

So yeah, this is a tough one. I'm thinking a Saison brewed with gin botanicals. Reveal to follow.

I need a hop break. Coincidentally, my only new IPA for the day comes courtesy of the same brewer of my previous new beer: Hubbard's Cave. This is their latest in their "Fresh IIPA" series: V30.

The Fresh IIPA series is essentially their version of Enjoy By - with a twist. Hubbard's Cave swaps up the hops each iteration (whereas Enjoy By, outside of the special versions, has remained remarkably consistent since its inception).

It's kind of annoying, as normally on BeerAdvocate (as opposed to Untappd), we don't track individual iterations of the same beer - but in this case, since the hops are different each time (and sometimes the ABV as well), it really is a different beer. Ah well.

This one is hopped with Simcoe and Chinook (naturally, favorites) as well as Idaho 7 (not normally a hop I particularly enjoy, although I have had some beers where it played very well with the yeast and malts to present a very enjoyable overall experience - Fat Orange Cat comes to mind immediately).

    On to the beer!

Murky and opaque, the beer is surprisingly dark. Head production is minimal.

The nose heavily favors citrus tones, in particular orange, with pine and resin behind. Some tropical and bright herbal tones as well.

On the palate .... this thing is a monster. I am frankly shocked at the juicy hop tones without any added fruit. Emphasis is still on citrus, with touches of mango and papaya, as well as a mild dankness. Body is lively, with plenty of sting up front, and just enough weight to remind you of the high ABV without ever coming across as boozy.

Man .... this one is damn impressive. I'm glad I picked up a four pack! Full review below:

So this is the reveal, Yorkshire Lavender, an Oatmeal Pale Ale brewed with Lavender by English brewery Brass Castle (4%)

Well, this was a tough one and quite an interesting experience. Turns out I was actually quite far off though, although maybe not that far? I can't say that I've ever had a beer, or any beverage, brewed with lavender before, so juniper was all I could think of, especially as I actually did have a gin botanical Pale Ale a while ago.

Now that I know it was brewed with lavender it suddenly seems so obvious to me, but I guess this is what blind tastings are all about. Many thanks @gavinbrooksbank again for a very interesting selection and for not going easy on me :stuck_out_tongue:.

New BA Baltic Porter Sunday (Week 742)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. I should be rejoicing about the fact that we are getting flooded with rain, but... that's enough now, mushrooms are happy, you can go ahead and stop now, Ms. Nature. Morels here are temperamental, and the worst for them is a few summer like days of heat. Also bad is protracted cold, and that has been the story here. Have had the weird experience of my best spots not producing and my least successful spots doing okay. Poor but not terrible season so far, but a few warm days may yet save it. Here's from one of my few decent days so far
    [IMG]
Today's beer is a variant of BA Framinghammer. Regular Framinghammer, and Regular BA Framinghammer are also fucking amazing beers. Get some if you haven't tried them! But if you, like me, are a hard core coffee lover this is gonna be in your sweet spot, like it is mine. Coffee BA Framinghammer
    [IMG]
My synopsis of this beer is it is a thickish, almost stout-like Baltic Porter that wants to be so much more, and succeeds. It actually is its own niche, and deserves to be. Coffee does dominate, but it is with help from righteous roasty chocolate and char goodness, and burnt sugars, as well as bourbon barrel notes and even a touch of hoppy citrus. Never gets acrid, doesn't build, alcohol well hidden, but a nice warming touch. Marvelous beer, go get some, highly recommended.

Nice late spring day here in the upper midwest. Just back in the house from the first lawn mowing of the season. Picked up a couple of different German Kellerbiers last week. Time to try one.

    Grevensteiner Original Naturtrübes Landbier

    IBU: 23
    ABV: 5.2%
    [IMG]

Bready aroma, with caramel and apple.

Thick, creamy off-white head, 1 inch, receding moderately with a deeply pitted surface and thick lacing. Slightly cloudy (but mostly clear) deep amber color with plentiful rising bubbles. Very inviting look in my footed pilsner glass.

Despite the abundant bubbles, palate is a bit flat but with nice body.

Robust complexity to the taste: fruity, caramel, grainy malts, nutty, floral hops, subtle hops bittering in the middle and lingering. Finish is tending toward dry, but more chewy and thick than crisp.

Overall, very enjoyable. The robust taste is very nice, but the finish lacks crispness.

I figured this rainy cold day would be a good stout NBS. I know I'm late to the party with this popular beer, but hey, Bell's has only been in CT for about a year, cut me some slack.
Happy Mother's day. In the background of my photos is a chocolate cake I made from scratch today for my wife and her(our) sons. What a pain in the ass, not doing that again for a long time. However when desert comes along I know the perfect beer compliment to the cake is available in my house.

    Bell's Expedition Stout.
Poured from a 12oz bottle dated 8/19/18 to a diagonal cut tumbler.
Pours opaque brown/black with a one finger brown head.
Aroma is rich, reminds me of chocolate covered cherries with brandy inside.
This is a complex beer, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, cherries, brandy maybe a touch of smoke, I don't normally like sweet stouts, and this isn't sweet except maybe by my standards, but I like this a lot. The mouthfeel is full tongue coating, sticky. This viscosity and surface tension nicely but temporarily coats the glass with each sip.
A new beer for my stout list for sure.
I gave it 4.5 in all the boxes.

    WBAYDN cross-post.

Diving into a local imperial stout, Cosmic Eye's Your Friend Death. 8.4% ABV, 4/16/19 canned on date. $2.99 single at the local store.

I would have rated the taste a 4 (and I really should have) but it's just a bit too bitter to be as enjoyable as it could be.

    First review!

    3.94/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Your Friend Death, 12 oz can dated 4/16/19, 8.4% ABV, poured into Stella Artois chalice.

Deep, silky black with a creamy almond head of 1/2 finger.

Slick coffee and cocoa aromas, with acidic black roasted coffee and a hint of blackberry.

Flavor brings a huge wave of coffee-chocolate, the chocolate turning more into the dark bitter cacao kind, with hints of dark berry and grassy piney hop.

Feel is creamy and silky, with a soft carbonation but pleasantly adequate.

Overall, a very delicious textbook Russian Imperial Stout. Very deep, bitter, dark, and roasty. It's a bit too bitter for me, so it's a little rougher to finish, but it is definitely enjoyable and a good example.

Opening something that's hopefully tasty for the Portland-Denver game. Hope everyone is enjoying Mother's Day!

The look is hazy yellow-orange with streaming carbonation and a white head (4.5)

The nose is complex. Lemon, pineapple, cherry, passion fruit, saltine cracker, and funk (4.25)

The taste is lemon, honey, white pepper, and oak, with tropical flavors in the background (4.25)

The mouthfeel is medium and lightly puckering, with a semi-dry finish and lingering pineapple and saltine flavors (4.25)

Overall, a bright, pretty beer that's less fruity than you'd expect with the amount of fruit in it. Nice oaky balance. Pushing 4.5 but I'll go with (4.25) - 4.26
