    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

    Deep, dark brown body, nearly black; thick and creamy light tan head; fingers of lacing streak down the glass. Big maple nose; vanilla; roasted grain; baker's chocolate. The taste comes across like a maple-flavored donut; fairly sweet; vanilla and milk chocolate; sublime and nuanced hop bitterness; boozy. Heavy body; oily; huge residual sugar presence; sweet mouthfeel.

    The can lists lactose and maple syrup as key ingredients, and they're here in spades. The beer definitely comes in on the sweet side and borders on the cloying. However, some of that may be attributed to the heavy maple flavor presence. The ABV is fairly well hidden for 10.0%. This beer is very tasty but is undeniably a sipper.

    I never had the Japan-brewed version of this beer but the US-brewed version of Sapporo Premium Black is decent.

    It is good. Really well balanced. Light, refreshing, acidic, complex. They've been doing a great job with their sour program.
