That is sad, she was a treasured contributor here, but we all must do what we must do.

Another new JP collab(Off Color), it's been a while. Almost a year cellared before release I guess. This was awesome. Great rocky head retention/dense soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tart lemon, lime, orange, citrus peel/zest, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, white grape/wine, oak, peppercorn, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate cracker, white bread dough malts; light leathery/musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Slight touch of white wine vinegar. Light-moderate lactic tartness, Brett tang, and yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced bread/grainy malt, sticky hops, lactic acid, and oak tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy/tannic dryness; zero pucker/astringency. Very smooth, nicely soft, pretty refreshing, not overly lactic, no warmth of 5.8%. Awesome well rounded classic JP Brett/Bacteria/Saison yeast complexity; with great oak presence and pale malts against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Right on point with expectations. 4.1

    Hello NBS.
Checking in a tad earlier than normal. I wish you all relief from seasonal extremes, as this summer rolls along (storms along for some of you). We are finally heating up here in SoCal. I swore I would not bitch and moan when it gets hot this summer for we actually had a "spring" here. It's been many a year since we have had what I would describe as a "proper spring." And this was the year. And although it has started to get hot, 90's to near a 100, it's still not as bad as some people are getting, and hey...it's actually seasonally appropriate. (I just hate it when it happens in April or November. I mean, "Come on!"
Anyway, I still have that lingering haze of a long trip. 2 weeks in Ireland, and a week in Scotland, have not completely left my system. (Next time I'd do 2 in Scotland). As far as beer goes, I would have liked to dig a little deeper. Some of the times we were rolling close to a brewery, but as the driver (and dad) I had to limit my exploring. Many of the ticks were bottles I picked up and could enjoy with my dad and wife in our accommodations. One stand out on Ireland was Galway Bay. In Scotland, I enjoyed my visit to Fyne Ales. I look forward to writing up Mills and Hills, a collar with de Molen.
So back here at home we have this gem, another collab between Kern River & Burgeon Brewing.

    Juiced Right Juicy IPA

Poured from a 12 oz can with an illegible marking.
Pours a luminous gold-tinged straw. Opaque, if not quite hazy. Fluffy white head rises almost two fingers high, slowly recedes to a creamy film of tiny, persistent bubbles. Sticky, scattered lacing.
Aroma is bursting with sweet, floral citrus notes, mainly lemon blossoms, hints of orange juice, and a kiss of pineapple.
Flavor follows loyally, beginning with the said citrus notes, but jumping into the mix are mango, pineapple, and fleeting notes of peach and apricot. Slight grass notes bring a smooth bittering dryness that peeks in, then quickly finishes with a subtle resiny note.
Mouthfeel is light to medium. Carbonation is a constant companion, active enough to allow for the flavors to play, smooth enough to avoid being overactive. Juicy, almost fluffy.
Overall, I am happy I grabber a 6pk versus the risk adverse approach single can.

    4.09/5 rDev +0.2%
    look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

So solid. I must save one for @Buck89 who I hope to have a handshake tick in a little over a week.

Happy Sunday NBS players. Another fine sunny and warm summer day here on the island. Busy as all hell today with lots of running around and taking care of shit. Finally done and am able to consider having a beer.

My new beer today is Nexus Of The Crisis, Imperial Coffee Stout, from Singlecut. The brew checks in a 11% abv and I cannot make out a bottle date so I have no idea on the age.

A dark black color on the pour with a big and frothy brown head of layered foam. Roasted malts on the nose but not as strong as I expected. Big roasted chocolate malt carries right over from the nose on the first few sips. Decently smooth on the flow and with a bittering finish. Additional notes of coffee grinds, vanilla, cocoa, brown sugar, and black liquorice. Full bodied with a mix of dry/sticky feel. Some alcohol burn on the finish but otherwise the abv hides rather well.

Overall, pretty decent stuff but I'm not really wowed with it. I wish the coffee was more pronounced but it may very well just be an older bottle. I'm in the high 3/4 range and by the looks of it's ba score I'll probably register a negative rDev.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

A long work week done, and getting ready for an even longer week next week.

The beer I picked today is something a friend picked up for me when he made a stop in Grand Rapids, MN, and here it is:

Downwind from Klockow Brewing in Grand Rapids, MN. It is a Smoked Chocolate Stout, and it clocks in at 7.7% ABV.

Chocolate and smoke really go well together. I am a fan of smoke in beers, and this delivers.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Pours pitch black. 3 finger brown head. Quite foamy, and the retention is pretty good. Some lacing on the glass as the head dissipates.
The nose has a nice smoked undertone. Chocolate is the main star of the show. Slightly sweet, but not too sweet.
Taste - The chocolate is up front. Somewhat of a sweet chocolate. The smoke kicks in hard on the backside, and it mixes up with the chocolate. The flavors work well together.
The body is a bit lighter than I was expecting. Decent, otherwise.
Tasty beer, and the flavors really work together.

One and done, and short and sweet, because I've got a lot to do. See you all next Sunday. Cheers.

    Good evening NBS
My second new beer for the day was ordered online from Belgianstyleales.com. Online ordering is about my only means of procuring new to me, relatively obscure Belgian beers. First pour pic...
    Third pour sample...
    The review:
11.2oz bottled DEC2017 on cap (19 months ago) poured into a Duvel glass at fridge temp 8% ABV. The beer pours bright light golden amber in color with prolific, meringue like off white head. My first gentle pour yielded one inch of beer in a Duvel. It took three pours to get a reviewable sample. Retention and lacing are world class. Beautiful beer. The aroma is lovely with pear, very light banana and clove. The taste is semisweet light malt with spicy Belgian yeast jumping in mid palate before a mildly bitter, grassy finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with above average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good. Really good BSPA that doesn't seem to have suffered from age. Not the most complex, but really solid and very tasty.

That's not my last new beer in the house, but it's my last for today. Cheers all!

Next up is my first from the so loved here, Lawson’s! By way of @brutalfarce

Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a Willi Becher style glass, this beer pours out a perfectly clear shade of gold. It forms a pinky worth of bone white crown that settles in to a thin mist capping the beer.

The nose brings sweet grains, honey, dry grass, corn and biscuits. Not a heavy hop presence, just letting the other aspects show.

The taste carries a honey covered toasted cracker or biscuit presence with prominence and slight grass and corn in the background.

The mouthfeel is dry, crisp and refreshing. The sweetness that comes through makes this feel thick for a Pilsner, which I don’t mind.

It’s somewhat sweet, but the hops are greatly in balance. This being my first from Lawson’s I would’ve expected (since they’re a NE brewery & brew mainly IPAs) that they would’ve went a route that ended up being too hoppy. But it’s kept greatly traditional and very well done.

    Thanks William & cheers NBS!

I'd love to see you do the same type of analysis with Pseudo Sue and King Sue. Actually, I'd love to sit with you and do that analysis with both of those beers from 2014 (only brewed at the brewery and available on tap or in bombers) vs 2019 (available in pint cans).

Well done. Actually, very, VERY well done.

    Collective Arts Guava Gose

This beer is a very sickly pale yellow. It’s sour and salty (too salty). Tastes of guava too... hense the name. American Gose like this just aren’t my cup of tea at all. The combination of flavors always makes me feel like I am drinking something that was produced by a body.

“Why” do I pick what I pick for NBS? Well, I frequently have a theme. Today’s beers were all given to me by someone else, and they were all beers I wouldn’t normally buy. I enjoy such a thing even if I don’t care for the beer because it always exposes me to something different.

Last week the theme of the thread was music and @papposilenus mentioned pianist Nicky Hopkins - a favorite of mine too. Currently listening to his great playing on this semi-hidden gem of a cut from the Stones. In my opinion, it’s one of Mick’s best vocals. Cheers.

Orange Village is the one closest to me. This was the one in Costa Mesa though. Wife had to make a stop at the Container Store. For what it’s worth, Brea and Orange Village tend to have the best selection both on tap and to-go. Usually have Bottle Logic stouts at Orange Village as well.
Which one is local to you? Maybe we’ll meet up sometime there! Cheers
