    I don't know anything, but I always sort of assumed it was the opposite.. Wouldn't a dirtier glass give it something to stick to?

    Depends on the dirt, fat or an oily residue would prevent lace from forming...I'm guessing.
    At least if you clean your glass the same way you'll have consistency from beer to beer.
