New Beer Sunday (Week 775)

So, this happened:
As I was rummaging through my fridge for ingredients for tonight's dinner I inadvertently knocked a can of beer out of the fridge and in trying to catch the S.O.B. I dislodged the lower shelf on the fridge's door letting loose 6 bottles including this. All were fine except for this 2 Reserva as it started a hissy fit and leaked a bit from its compromised cap. I cleaned up the tiny mess and poured...
I am definitely not upset with the result of the mishap!

Label has two different abv statements: 7% & 8%!
Moderate pour yields a beautiful slightly off white head over a dark golden body with some lacing. This beer's head just won't quit! Nose of toffee, caramel, candy sugar, slight barnyard funk, cellar floor, and a tiny bit of wheat. Taste mirrors nose in a slightly sour kind of way with white grapefruit trying to pierce through all those other aromas and flavors. Wow! Champagne-like feel and overall, very impressed, yet again, with the wizards of Oostvleteren for this offering! Cheers to Urbs and crew!!!

Edit: The head on this, after 30 minutes, is still 1/8 inch thick without swirling at all!!!

I post not to complain, but to educate, as I reckon the vast majority of folks here (and elsewhere) celebrating the "end" of the decade are completely unaware that they are off by a year. Now they can celebrate however they see fit, but armed with knowledge. It's now a choice.

I was a regional manager, managing a sales team that was selling, amongst other things (wait for it) .... transfer switches.

Which were used with generator sets.

It was literally like owning the goose that was laying golden eggs every second of every day.

And on January 1, 2000, everyone’s power was still on.

It’s a beer nerd miracle!!!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is doing well. Time for a new beer to celebrate the Eagles making the playoffs with Tired Hands Unique Façade.

Unique Façade was brewed in October of 2018 with an abundance of malted wheat. Fermented in oak with our Magickal Saison year, and a melange of house microflora. Conditioned on second use peaches and apricots. Bottles in February of 2019 and refermented in the bottle for natural carbonation.

750 ml bottle poured into an Ourison glass

A- A hazy golden orange with a three finger white head.

S- Funky, oak, apricots, some peach, wheat, some bandaids.

T- Apricots, wheat, some peaches, peach skins, tart, funky, some oak.

M- Smooth, light body.

O- Tart, really funky with nice fruits. Easy to drink and the 9.5% ABV is well hidden.

Whenever a random import pale lager makes it's way to southern Indiana, I have to try it

11.2oz bottle BBD MAR2020 (about 9 months old) poured into a pilsner glass at fridge temp 5% ABV. The beer pours bright light straw yellow with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. The aroma is faint pils malt and floral hops. The taste is semisweet pils malt with a mild, but steady, bitterness throughout. There are hints of grass and flowers as well. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good. A nice refreshing lager, even at its advanced age. No diacetyl or other flaws.

I'm no traveler, so have to wait for some things to come to me. I never regret a single from some far away place. Cheers all!

Boulevard Sweet Imperial Stout age in Bourbon Barrels ( Tasting Room Series ), 11.9% ABV; 3.93 overall

Pours an effervescent chestnut with a pinky of fast falling tan head. Not much head retention or lacing

S: Bourbon, figgyness, a little black cherry

T: Dark fruit; figs, raisins, dark cherry, sweet coffee & a touch of booze & leafy hops up front. Figgyness, dry woodyness & a touch of warming boozes as this warms, hints of cherry & chocolate as well. Finishes a little dry, jammy with boozeyness & leafy hops

MF: Medium body, firm carbonation

Not bad, was expecting more sweetness

750 ml. bottle rec'd in a trade before my hard drive crash about 6-7 years ago. No date on bottle but I'm guessing 2011-2012 Vintage? Moderate pour yields a one inch tan head over a very dark brown body with sticky lacing. Nose of dark roasted malt, chocolate, and spices including cinnamon, vanilla, and ginger. As it warms to suggested ideal drinking temperature of 55° F, the ginger really takes over on the nose and the palate. Flavors include aforementioned chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon with a hint of honey, but the ginger spanks them into submission, especially on the finish. Nice velvety feel from the proper use of lactose and overall, what a treat to finally crack one of these from a 4-pack of two glasses and two bottles from so long ago.

Last week I discussed Genesee Schwarzbier and this week it will be Von Trapp Trösten. Winter weather and Dark Lagers just seem to go well together.

I have had a number of beers from Von Trapp: Dunkel, Vienna Lager, Bohemian Pilsner, Oktoberfest, Helles, Kolsch… and they have all been good with some better for my palate than others. Heretofore my personal favorite is the Dunkel which I think is very good – excellent. Since today I will be drinking another version of a Dark Lager from Von Trapp I have high hopes here.

Below is how Trösten is detailed on the Von Trapp website:

“Trösten Lager 6.0% ABV 19 IBU | 12 oz 6-pk Cans

Trösten, translating to “comforting”, is a dark lager with rich notes of chestnut and toast. Carafa and smoked malts create rich flavors lingering on a surprisingly light, smooth finish. Brewed for the cold winter nights in Vermont, but can be enjoyed on any occasion.”

Served in two small-ish tulip glasses for sharing with my wife:

Appearance:

Dark Brown approaching black color. A tan head.

Aroma:

The aroma is subtle with a combination of dark bread (like pumpernickel bread), a subtle smokiness and even a bit of a toffee.

Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a combination of flavors but the smokiness aspect more noticeable. A moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel:

Light-Medium bodied with an off dry finish.

Overall:

This beer is good. I thought the smoke level was in the Goldilocks zone (just right) for this beer. For my palate this beer would have benefited from a bit more mouthfeel.

Today's NBS New Breakfast Beer is from @2beerdogs and NBS BIF #10 - thanks Derek for this great brew from The Bruery, Hoarders Cuvee 2018 Edition!!

Received from @2beerdogs in NBS BIF 10 – Thanks Derek! Reviewed 12/29/19.
No date other than “2018 Edition”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 61 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Medium brown, clear.
Body – Dark brown, opaque. When held to direct light, murky and translucent at the top.
Head – Average (Maximum two cm, aggressive center pour), light tan, low density, short retention, diminishing to no crown and no cap, just a few regenerating bubbles around the rim.
Lacing – None but not unexpected in a 16.6% ABV libation.
Aroma – 4 – Roasted malt quickly being overpowered by bourbon with notes of graham cracker, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg (?).
Flavor – 4.5 – It begins with a sweetness, almost cloying. The first swallow burns all the way down, but after that no alcohol (16.6 % ABV as stated on label) flavor or aroma is noticeable, although a moderate and continuous gastric warming occurs. The predominant flavor is bourbon and graham crackers, interesting in itself because graham crackers are basically flavored wheat crackers, so is there enough wheat present to make this a wheat wine? Probably not. Cinnamon is noted and could come from either or both the graham crackers and the added cinnamon. The same setup is possible with the ginger. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide, no malt, no hops.
Palate – 4 – Full, creamy, soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5. The lack of head and lacing is not unexpected at the 16.6% ABV; otherwise, the appearance is as expected for an imperial stout. After the initial burst of roasted malt, the aroma becomes (and remains) spiced bourbon. The additives ginger (Graham crackers, ginger snaps, ginger), cinnamon (graham crackers, cinnamon), maybe molasses (depending on the brand of graham crackers and ginger snaps), cardamom and clove (again, cracker brand dependent but not noted in either taste or aroma), and brown sugar (ditto) may or may not be mulled in the final taste and aroma. Overall, this is a stimulating Strong Ale, with the flavors helping to balance the depressing effects of the alcohol.
Rating 4.24, rDev +4.2%.

The beers @2beerdogs sent in NBS BIF #10 make me glad I live so far from Anaheim/Placentia, otherwise I'd be sitting on the sidewalk holding a sign "Will work for Bruery money", having already spent my savings and Socialist Security checks on their brews, although I gots to admit landing at SNA beside a multi-lane highway is a bit unnerving.
