After having read about Lithuanian farmhouse ales, I'd like to check them out. Don't know if any make it over to America, and I haven't found any at the Eastern European grocery stores I swing by every now and then.

. When I see references to beer milkshakes, I envision John Steinbeck’s “Cannery Row”. When I think of that, I think of my 3 favorite gents named John: Steinbeck , Jamison, & Prine. My wife knows that if I’m enjoying the fellowship of these three fine fellows to leave me be but watch me closely.

They might be but never should be. Porter and Mild have completely different characteristics, the only common ground is the dark colour. And Mild was originally pale anyway.
Mild is dark because of the use of those lovely brewing sugars whereas Porter uses roasted grains. A totally different sort of beer.
That is if the brewery understands beer styles and this is sadly not always the case.

Even Americans spelt it colour until Webster decided on his own set of rules. In turn, derived from the Norman French couleur.

gonna be a little controversial and say Scottish ales..no NOT Scotch Ales. I know any back in Blighty consider them just bitters. But a nice 70' at around 3.8 %..lovely. session beer.
Lucky a local brewer here does a perfect 70'. And weirdly it sells fast in the summer

I'm with you on these 3, Black IPA's specifically. Used to get Stone's Sublimely Self-Righteous all the time and was bummed when they discontinued it.

    • Pale ale options seem limited - and not the sort that are just haze IPAs at 5.5%
    • Stouts under 6%

Tell me about it! A Pale Ale that's not made to be enjoyed in quantity is betraying the style's entire beauty and purpose.

I used to be like this also and that's because there are so many new IPAs and the style is very diverse and one can taste so differently from the next, fun to explore. But then I realized that I was a part of the problem and contributing to the slow demise of the other styles that I enjoyed so I made it a point to start buying them a little more.

I love many of the suggestions here and fully onboard but the issue I see with some of these styles is that they are just too similar tasting and unless you do some crazy experimentation a good Helles from brewery A isn't going to be much different than a good Helles from brewery B, where as some of the other styles you can really set yourself apart. And unlike some other beverages beer has little brand loyalty. It's a tricky game and unfortunately I do understand why so many styles have fallen by the wayside. But what's sad to think about is that some really great styles/beers may vanish forever if some of these trends continue.
