What's a lambic brewer more people should know about?

I love lambic but I've noticed that most people (myself included) know few breweries outside of the "classics" (3F, cantillon, boon, bokke, antidoot...) while it feels like most stout drinkers have several smaller breweries they like. So, in this topic, tell me about that one small (or medium) lambic brewery too few people know about !

I'll start with Pellicle Vergistingen. I've only had them at last year's wild fest Groningen but the lambics were exquisite, with the highlight of the day being the Meunier, a lambic brewed with grapes and cherry. The funk and fruitiness were really on point, and I look forward to having the chance to drink more ! If you have the chance, I'd highly recommend trying it out.

Lindeman makes some pretty good lambics, in all varieties. They are widely available at reasonable prices

Most of these probably do not fit the “few people know about” requirement, but if we are compiling a list I will add: Tilquin, Hanssens, Oud Beersel, Vanhonsebrouck, excluding American producers who make beer in this style.

The last one is probably the least recognizable name and makes a very lovely beer, which I unfortunately never see anymore:

I haven't had much by the De Cam yet, but the bottles I've had were excellent, I'm actually surprised by how little known they are. I also had a really nice Geuze by Oud Berseel once. Tilquin shouldn't really bear mentioning as they very much part of the classics, but not in OP's examples.

I will also respectfully disagree with Lindemans and Hanssens. The Cuvée René line by Lindemans is good, but their other stuff is basically flavored sugar water. The Geuze I had by Hanssens was very good, but all of their fruited Lambic was pretty much vinegar. Not sure if all of them went bad or if that is their actual flavor profile.

I'm hit and miss with Hannsens as well, but their Oude Gueuze is amazing, and the Oude Kriek I remember being the standout of the fruit Lambic. I agree with the above that some of their fruit Lambic can be very vinegary.

A lot of those mentioned above are not actual brewers but blenders. It doesn't matter though, there are indeed a lot of smaller enterprises that not many people know of. Personally I prefer Hanssens Gueuze to that of some of the more reputable companies, but a lot of beer aficionados haven't even heard of them.

Girardin Black Label is one of my favorite gueuzes, and maybe the one that ages the best. Hanssens Oudbeitje is one of my favorite fruited lambics, especially fresh. Like @Snowcrash000 I’ve really enjoyed the De Cams I’ve tried, but they tend to be pretty expensive.

I would second Lindemans and Timmermans. Also, Brouwerij Boon does some very good stuff, which based on the number of reviews, might not be as widely known/available as it deserves.

Boon Marriage Parfait was unknown to many of my friends. Not sure how unknown it is to the BA crowd, but if you are just hearing about it, well, go get some.

Edit: Ha I see as I posted the commenter above me has the same good idea

I had De Cam's Oude Geuze yesterday and it was excellent, easily in the same league as 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze, so better than Cantillon. One of the funkiest standard Geuzes I've had, great stuff.

Lambiek Fabriek is highly underrated. Since the OP specifically asked for small, lesser known brewers & blenders, I would add these producers to the list: Bofkont, Den Herberg, Eylenbosch, Kestemont, OWA, Sako.

At the end of 2018, Hanssens has replaced 90% of their barrels with new ones from Bulgaria, due to quality issues with the old ones. I was on site for Tour de Geuze last year, and their fruited lambics had vastly improved. Sure, there were still a couple of intensely sour ones, but that has always been their profile.

that is really good to know! I hadn't bought a bottle of Hanssens in years because of their quality issues. Might have to go back and try some again.

That makes a lot of sense, I remember not being able to drink some of the fruited Lambics from Hanssens many years ago. Oude Geuze and Kriek then arrived in in my area around 2018 (I would have to check exact dates but that seems right) and remember the Kriek specifically being so much improved. Good info, thanks.

Phil Markowski is brewing some fantastic lambics at Area Two, the new experimental brewery at Two Roads. Doing some great wild fermented stuff too. Not sure how far the Area Two stuff reaches, but if you see it I think it’s worth a look. I have liked most of what I have tried so far. (Nice tap room too although it’s closed right now)

How strict about the definition of Lambic are we being here? Near me, Garden Path makes nothing but wild ales, some of which might be considered Lambics.

I find great lambics/gueuzes to be divine, and the best ones I’ve had have been amongst my all time favorite beers. That being said, I find the moderate tier lambics/guezes to be exceptionally underwhelming.

My own failed home brewing endeavors aside, based on the plethora of popular and well received offerings, it seems that it is relatively easy to brew imperial stouts and hop forward ales that will appeal to the masses. Producing and blending high quality lambics/gueuzes seems to be pretty damn difficult, and perhaps the quality may even depend on the local flora of the region. Maybe that is why we don’t see a lot of random recommendations or sprouting popularity of up and comers for these styles.

Have you had the botanical series or lambikstoempers or DHVL20 or Goedele's Blossom? Lindemans can make killer lambic.
