They'll see it mentioned in some national magazine who doesn't understand how distribution works and hound their local liquor store wondering why they don't carry it.

Sooooo... I have a bit of bad news to share.

Terry (@beertunes) pointed out to me a few days ago that @NWer hadn't posted in this forum for some weeks, which is a bit unusual. Cynthia and I are casual friends with Larry and Monica, so I tried to reach out to see if everything is OK with him. I was finally able to speak to Monica on Friday, and she advised me that Larry had had a stroke, and had been in the hospital the past few weeks. She indicated that he's awake and coherent, but is still pretty weak and disorganized. She's not sure when he'll be able to come home.

I've known Larry for several years now, thanks to BA. and during that time we've developed a friendship. We usually would get together and chat over a few beers whenever he and his wife came down to pdx (he was always a big HOTD fan).

@NWer (Larry) has always been an active and popular participant in this forum, and I'm hoping it will only be a matter of time before I see him posting his thoughts and observations again. In the meantime, he and his wife are in my prayers. Hopefully, he'll make a full recovery very soon.

That's pretty awful news. @NWer , I wish you a full and speedy recovery, and hope to see you back in our fair town.

Gah. That's terrible news, but I appreciate you and Terry looking into Larry's absence and sharing your findings with us.

@NWer I hope you recover soon. You are missed.

Monica and Larry have come up to Hamsterville several times, for various bottleshares and the like, and he has met up with the hobos when we venture southward.

Monica has always been a good sport. I'll ask what she wants to do while we're doing beery things, and point her to things that she's interested in. So, while we keep Larry in mind, let us please remember to thank Monica during this trying time.

Yes, he's our beer friend, but she's his life (especially now) and needs our love and support as well.

As a healthcare provider who specializes in brain and spine conditions, I am super bummed out about this. I diagnose strokes all the time, and its really trying for me to think about the downstream circumstances of the diagnosis. Occupational and physical therapy, social work and placement, not to mention whatever underlying medical issues there are. I have to try to shut it out in doing my job, but knowledge of the toll it takes on people is hard to avoid. I won't get into political things here, but I will say that these kind of things I see all the time at work (not just stroke, but chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis) informs my political beliefs and I wish people would think a little bit more beyond "it won't happen to me".

Oh no. Larry is such a nice dude, I hope he gets well soon and is able recover at home as soon as possible. He always wished me well after my surgeries the last few years and never let me pay for a beer. It's time for karma to kick in big time and help him out.

in addition to the Firestone Walker BA extravaganza, Apex now has a bunch of Fremont BA goodies on tap. could do a lot of damage to your wallet and liver if you wanted to

There's no two ways about it, the current list at Apex is probably the best in the country, especially on these cool, clear nights. The good news is that they sell 3 ounce pours of all those beers, so you will endure only half as much liver and wallet damage.

This is good to know. Wish I had known during my last visit.

Though really... I still would have wanted at least a full pour of the ba Speedway.

That is the correct size for a BA Speedway. However, 3oz was plenty as far as the Maple and Scotch variants went. If you didn't get around to the Coconut Rye Parabola, you should, that's a doozy

Heater Allen Export lager is on its way out to your local haunts, along with Abzug, their 3.8% Vienna-ish lager!

I've been house hunting down in Portland and made a pit stop at Apex. The taplist is absolutely killer right now, and I've never been more impressed with Apex as I have during COVID. Super clean, temperature checks, all digital payments. I had a great time.

I recommend skipping the maple and napa Parabola's in favor of the '15 or scotch.

How's the export lager? Have been a huge fan of the version put out by Wayfinder and Chuckanut, and have to figure Heater Allen's is damn good as well.

The Apex always has one of the best taplists in town IMHO. What tends to wear me out there is the pricing, the uneven customer service, their sampler policy and their TV rules. The cash only policy is annoying as well, though I appreciate the fact that they've lifted that during the pandemic.

If you carry around a lot of cash, never watch TV at a bar, always know what you want and so never need to ask for a taste of some new beer, and don't mind paying $12 for a 12 ounce glass of ba stout that retails for that much per bomber (i.e. Lagunitas), then the Apex is as good as it gets in pdx.

Occidental Brewing has just released their Czech-Style Dark Lager. Canned yesterday, available in their online store today, and at the taproom tomorrow.

    According to my notes:
    1. It's marginally outdone by the Wayfinder. I'd like to find out for sure (Wayfinder, can you take a hint?)
    2. I haven't had the Chuckanut, which I hope they release again and soon

Taking the advice in this thread, I hit apex for a BA speedway and coconut rye parabola. Both were delicious, but I side with @John_M that the BA speedway is worth whatever journey it takes to try it. Alesmith has lowkey had one of the best BA programs in the country tbh, and this one is way up there

Anyone know if Pelican is allowing proxy pick-ups for the Mother of All Storms sale?
