I was in a similar situation in Ohio years ago (I’m 54). We were actually grandfathered-in. I could buy beer at 19, but couldn’t buy wine or liquor until I was 21. Some bars would look the other way and let us do shots, others would not.

NJ had "vertical" Drivers Licenses for all ages (well, you had to fold the document printed on card stock in half, first) - never had a problem with that. NJ drinkers, OTOH, had lots of problems when they went out of state and showed these ID's:
"What's this? No, I need your legal Drivers License with photo..."
    ...
or even needed the DL # - some forms didn't have room for all the digits.

I probably made my original post in haste. Honestly, the more I think about the alternative (raising the BAC limit), the more I envision disastrous results.

    That's up to the municipality.
Up until the early 1970s, NJ bars could only sell packaged goods for off-premise consumption during the legal hours for liquor stores - that meant no sales before 9am, or after 10pm AND no Sunday sales. But bars could legally still sell beer to-go in cardboard (later plastic*) "Containers".
Old-timers will still reminiscence how beer never tasted as good as it did out of a cardboard "Container". *The plastic ones had no charm - imagine drinking out of a potato salad-style container?:grimacing:

I still can picture a high school buddy of mine with a not very good fake ID coming out of a bar, big "sucess!" smile on his face, early on a Sunday afternoon carrying a cardboard Schaefer beer case full of already-leaking containers. I think about it every time I pass a private residence off the highway that used to be that bar. (Lots of "former-bar" buildings and empty lots in NJ :slight_frown:).

there’s one in Burlington city that used to be a bar and i was young but since it was down the street from my fathers house I remember the crowd. Now it’s a shell. Looks like a normal house from the outside.

Cinnaminson, Burlington Township (both shop rites owned by same family). Mystic Islands and Beach Haven are the only places I’ve seen grocery sell alcohol.

dive bars with a to go store are common in the shore towns too

Yeah, up around central Jersey, whatever actual town (they use the address "Princeton" but I think it's really West Windsor) that the Wegmans and Trader Joes is on Rt. 1 allows it. East Brunswick used to have a tiny Foodtown that sold beer (it was kept in wooden door coolers under the produce!) and Highland Park has a chain drug store (used to be a Drug Fair) that sells beer - those two might have been grandfathered in.

Yeah, they used to be a lot more common - there was even a big chain called "Bilow's" all over central Jersey that was more big liquor store, most with a tiny bar area stuck off to the side. (Funny thing about that chain - "Bilow" wasn't meant to suggest "Buy Low" - it was the owners name).

Those usually have a different license-
Pretty sure any NJ liquor store that sells growlers has to have this license, even if they don't currently have a bar area for "consumption".

When I lived in Newton (Kansas) airplanes flying over the state weren't allowed to serve alcohol in "Kansas airspace", grocery store beer was 3.2 only, and there were dry counties we worked in (construction). I still am amazed the first wife and I lasted a year.

:angry:What kind of Slander is this! Now I know the origin of your screen name!
(Oh, wait - "slander" is spoken, so this must then be libel!)

Nah, that was before everybody was so concerned with bullying and being politically correct. If I wore glasses, it would have said "4".

Oh, wait - no, that wasn't it. Flip the license over and you'll see I had baby blue eyes...
What!? That must be a phony ID. "Brown eyes"... like in the Van Morrison song?

(Note, too, that weight chart. Many a young woman back then went on a diet rather than see her license changed to a "2"...)

No, not me. Do a search of my posting history, I have a long record of hating those kinds of beers.

I have nothing to add to this thread beyond offering what will likely be one of my few lasting contributions to humanity, which was initially creating the List of alcohol laws of the United States page on Wikipedia.

(Many states - usually the ones with more "interesting" laws - have dedicated pages as well)

VAs laws are pretty tame, since the whole "can buy pints at breweries" passed many moons ago (used to have to get your growler filled and then skate)

Years ago my wife was TDY in FL and tried to buy booze in the wee hours of the day. People yelled at her like she sacrificed a baby.

I have good friends living in North Jersey. The town they live in you can’t order alcohol in an eatery. You can bring your own or in at least one case you can buy alcohol at the eatery from a “store” inside the place.

PA we can’t buy more than 192 ounces of beer at a time from grocery or any other store not licensed as a beer distributor( Here I can buy 5 million ounces with no issues). I can walk in and out 100 times and purchase each time but only up to 192. Why ???????????.

Grocery stores need to have beer sold at a separate register, not one where groceries are paid for.

    Enjoy

I guess most of that 60k is wine. I was behind a women once who purchased almost $6000.00 of wine at the local Bottle King. That included a case of Cristal.

I've often wondered if there was a clearinghouse with that info, so now I know. Thanks for all the work that must have gone into that effort.:beer:

NY? Wine & spirits can't be sold in the same place as beer.
Some do, but they have separate or divided buildings , with different entrances . Wegman's for example, has the liquor store in a separate building , in the outer reaches of the parking lot. On the plus side, it discourages the big chains, and maybe helps the small independent guys (&women - Hi , Nicole :sunglasses:)

Please share what info you find. I'm particularly curious, at what layer of the atmosphere does 'KS airspace' start/end?

That's my basic question as well. But, apparently, back in the 70s, they had a AG who was adamant about enforcing "drug and alcohol laws" in the state. There were at least some airlines who wouldn't serve while over the state. But, I haven't heard yet if they would pull drinks that had already been served.

I'm finding this one very intriguing. Seems like a case where federal law would overrule state law, but, I'm no lawyer.
