I once asked that this be eliminated. It increased to 30 minutes for a time, but is now back to 15 minutes. I'm not sure of the rationale behind the time limit.

You may want to bring this topic up again in the sub-forum for requested changes, etc.. to the forums...

@FBarber - with this tasting happening so close to St. Patrick's Day, the above provides a nice loophole for someone to include a particular variety of beer from Guinness if they desire. Foreign Extra Stout was called West India Porter before 1849.

I went digging in my cellar looking for my 2012 Pit Caribou Gaspésienne which I could not find so I'm thinking it's gone. I did manage to find my To øL Black Ball so at least I have something to play with.

I know almost nothing about how you run these online tastings. How many beers do you generally taste? How long do you spend tasting? Do you set up with Zoom or some such? More info please.

That is entirely up to you. Some people just do one or two ... some do 7 or 8 over the whole tasting. Its really whatever you feel comfortable with.
So the tasting will be in a separate thread posted here in the beer talk forum. It will be open for about 48 hours, so you'll be able to post and interact in the forum for the tasting while its open.
We do not do any type of zoom tasting or anything. Its just posting in the forum. Here are the most recent 3 tasting threads so you can read through them and get an idea of what they're like:

@beerthiefdotca ... what @FBarber said... join us! Drink your porter (or several), take notes (simple or verbose, either way or in-between), tale a picture if you want, and tell us what you think of it!

I'll just add that I find the really cool and interesting parts of these tastings is when there are several people posting notes of the same beer, and you can see how the same thing hits different palates.

With that in mind I'd just suggest not going with something too unusual or hard to find.

It’s a shame you can’t find the Gaspesienne. A fantastic beer from a great brewery that our neighbours to the south likely have not heard much of. That would have been a great one to share.

I can try to look again, I know I drank the triple IPA I had from them a little while ago. I didn't have too many from there. I am hoping to get a few microbrews from new breweries here for the tasting, there are a bunch out there right now. Looking at the Canada forum there's pretty much nobody talking about the Newfoundland scene. These days I'm pretty much outside of it but maybe I'll try to put in a little effort. Just got 3rd edition of the World Atlas of beer and there's barely a mention. I'll send an email to Tim and Stephen and tell them one or both of them need to make a trip.

Did you reply on the wrong thread?
Never mind, I see you were replying to Coronaeus' reply

To echo @TongoRad post a few porters you want to drink and tell us what you think of them. Sometimes someone will pipe in with something special, but for the most part the beers are pretty widely available. It isn't a contest.

The Canadian forums here are a little underpopulated of late. More from Newfoundland would be fantastic. The last Newfoundland beer I had was a Bennett Dominion Ale in early 1990s....

Funny, I'm drinking a Dominion right now as all I can get close to home are industrial lagers. It is now Molson.

I was checking back on my Untappd and the Gaspesienne is sadly gone.

Good morning everyone, and thanks again to everyone who helped make the previous Porter tasting such a success.

Next on the docket is a Spring Bock tasting, and it's time to pick a date. I propose the weekend of April 23-25. This should allow enough time for any seasonal possibilities to appear. Plus, the weekend after will be the Kentucky Derby, which might cause a conflict.

How does this work for everyone?

Sounds good to me, now the question is whether I'll be able to find any packaged bock beers. Any tips on import brands to keep my eyes out for? The only one I know is around is Schlenkerla Urbock, since it right next to the Rauch Helles on the shelf. I'd imagine it's not the most traditional example though

I just drank one of those Urbock's yesterday, nothing near a traditional bock. Don't know if I can find any bocks here, maybe one in the cellar.

    Sounds good to me!
Its smoky AF ... but if you like rauchbiers its a classic.

Im going to be in the same boat though ... trying to find some bocks to pick up will be interesting. Hopefully some of the local lager breweries drop some maibocks soon.

Sounds good... but I'm a bit disoriented... why aren't we waiting until 2 weeks before to pick the date???:grin:

    Shiner?

There are several import dopplebocks available here. Bocks? Not so much.
