Late getting on board today. Tying one of my buddy's beers, I don't typically drink "session" beers and probably wouldn't have bought it if I'd read the label. Also I'm not much for red ales. Not bad, I get grassy on the attack. Entirely quaffable.

Stone Fear Movie Lions. The strongest beer I had in the fridge right now @ 8.5% abv. Needed a higher octane offering after finding out I have to start working 10 hour days. I'm 61, I don't want to be working that many hours. First gulp, aaaah, that's better.

    Original June 30th, 2019 ratings: 3.75 4.0 3.75 4.0 3.75

    This sample bottled 16FEB21

Much better look; thicker, more lasting head. The smell seems about the same, perhaps with a bit stronger vanilla presence. The taste seems fuller, rounder, with less grain husk and more malt sweetness; the vanilla adds some nice depth. The mouthfeel leaves the same impression.

This version seems better all around than from 2019. I don't know how old my first review was, but this sample is just over five weeks old. It is rock solid throughout and very tasty.
    --------------------
Black body topped with a relatively thin and foamy tan head. Rich aroma of chocolate and cocoa, coffee, and a bare hint of sweet vanilla. Rich flavor with the vanilla more pronounced; milk chocolate and cocoa sweetness; grain husk acridness; decent bitterness counterbalancing the rich sweetness. Heavy body; smooth and silky on the palate; heavy residual sugar heft; mostly sweet mouthfeel overall.

This beer brings some very nice deep chocolate and vanilla combinations to the palate. The mouthfeel just glides over your palate and the taste is very agreeable. Sweet and tasty.

Another from the 12 pack I bought today at work. I am not a hemp fan, and probably shouldn't have bought this 12 pack.

Pours a hazy, murky golden color. 1 finger white head. Head retention is ok, and there's some lacing on the glass.
The nose is hoppy, with a hemp aroma, which I'm not a fan of.
Taste - Hops come up front. The hemp flavor in the middle, and a bit of sweetness on the backside.
    Decent bodied, slightly crisp feeling.
I probably shouldn't be drinking this series, because I'm not a "hemp" fan at all.

Surprised it's only 5.6% ABV. Those Schlitz Malt Liquor Baby Bulls were 5.9%.

A fresher Stillings Street from Trillium, full of the glorious Nelson hop, @TheIPAHunter's favorite I believe, really nice white/green grape, gooseberry, kiwi, apricot, cantaloupe, mango, citrusy tropical fragrant floral lemongrass notes, pretty wonderful and beautiful. Cheers all!

First brew of the evening is by other half, hdhc ace. It’s a good beer, nice malt presence with the citra. Not quite as smooth or creamy as some other dipas, but fine non the less.

They release it at the start of Spring each year, it’s a good option through Summer. It’s nice enough today (60 ish) to enjoy.

    Billy Dee co-signs.

I gave Dreadnaught a shot, it’s a little better than my 3.75 rating. Not a repeat purchase at this price point ($8.75 12 oz).

[IMG] onight's Beer Tasting Lineup is a Blind Battle Beers:

    1) Josefsbrau Pilsner (5.4%): This Czech-style pilsner from Trader Joe's. Light grassy and grainy hops atop a strong, pale butter bread backbone. Drinks quite authentic true to style.
    versus
    2) Bahaus Wonderstuff (5.4%): A Czech-style pilsner from Bahaus in Minnesota that has an American twist to this traditional style. Lemon citrus and salty, aple grainy malts.

    3) Firestone Walker's Luponic Distortion No. #017 (5.9%): A clean drinking IPA from Firestone walker along their Luponic Distortion series said to have flavors of lime, blueberry, and pomelo. I get flavors of green citrus, Asian fruit, kiwi, and slight apple/berry flavor.
    versus
    4) Lagunitas Stereoscopic Volume 1 (7.2%): A newer beer from Lagunitas that is brewed with Mosaic and Nelson Sauvin hops. Has a strong and resinous tropical flavor of berries and resinous green tropical fruit.

    5) Wichita Brewing Company's 5:02 Amber Ale (5.7%): An Amber Ale from Wichita, KS from a local brewery that has strong toasty flavors of brown bread, crust & crumbs. Some mild grassy hops. Extremely toasty and malty, but well-balanced by the grassy hops and carbonation. Drinks incredibly clean.
    versus
    6) Alaskan Amber (5.3%): An Altbier from Alaska that has rich and malty flavors of caramel, molasses, whiskey, vanilla icing, and pine flavors. Mild piney hops, but leans rich and malty. I consider this one of the standards for the style.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Winners:

    1) Trader Joe's Josefbrau Pilsner: Quite authentic Czech flavors with strong buttery bread. Full-bodied and buttery. Maybe they changed the recipe on this one, because I don't remember it drinking so true to the style. Wonderstuff is excellent also, but less true to the Czech Pils style.

    3) Firestone Walker's Luponic Distortion #17: Can't believe they've done 17 of these, but this was a pretty good beer. Lots of green citrus, Asian fruit, and light apple/grape flavors. Impressively flavorful yet clean for only 5.9% ABV.

    5) Wichita Brewing Company's 5:02 Amber Ale: Hard to compare these two because technically they are different styles. This one has strong toasty flavors while drinking clean. Drinks like how you'll find many US renditions of Oktoberfest. Not unlike a Marzen. Today this beer impressed me and I was less impressed by Alaskan Amber.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Agree/Disagree with the winners?
Have you tried Firestone Walker's Luponic Distortion Series No #17 and what did you think? Is this a series worth continuing?
Have you tried either of the Amber ales (Wichita Brewing Company or Alaskan) and is Alaskan Amber one of the best Altbiers?

Probably appropriate that I’m drinking this beer as I watch a news story about whether genetic males who identify as females should be able to compete in female sports. Sweet merciful crap, can someone please rescue us from this lunacy. Cheers. [IMG]
