This isn't a free speech issue though. Nobody is throwing you in a gulag for disagreeing.

Is there a limit to how many people we can have on our ignore list? :unamused:

Well ya it is, when you start deleting comments it’s the verbal equivalent to the gulag. It’s still being stifled and eliminated, but being a private site you can moderate as you please. Free speech is just that everything stands that’s not a verbal threat or verbal assault, and that’s not the case here.

Good grief! Let it go already!

What is so hard to understand? It's been answered several times here. To spew derogatory crap is NOT free speech, it's hate speech. This site has rules and you have to follow them. If not, you get warned/banned or you're free to leave. It's pretty clear where you stand with this issue, you just don't want to flat out come out and say it, so you're just "beating around the bush".

I've recently noticed that more and more people are really edgy these days. It is obvious on walks in the park with many self absorbed and some just plain rude. There is no new agenda around here, it's the same as it ever was. We need to weather this effing virus and emerge stronger...... Just pay attention. A more inclusive world is better than the one we inherited. We do live in a great country, but we do not need to go back in time to re-capture the promise of American potential. These are the new days. It is always there and endlessly attainable.

You've got the right to free speech, not free amplification. People spew hate all over this great nation without consequence from our government. As distasteful as it is at times, this is as it should be. Private enterprises like this can do whatever the fuck they want. Thank god. Don't like it? Go start your own beer site.

Exactly. I personally find hate speech repulsive, especially by anonymous cowards who hide behind a keyboard. But I can’t deny their right to be an asshole.

Damn right. I don't like assholes, but they do self identify. There is no way to hide behind mean bigoted hatred. It is like rotten shrimp in the trunk....... But let them speak, disappear, and/or repent!!! Like Strom Thurmond and not like Jesse Helms.

hope I dont seem to be busting your balls and I actually on a logical basis agree with you.
But if it is a private institution they can ,for the most part call the shots.
For me personally I agree with the mods, everytime I see something on here before its deleted it just upsets me
Im not in denial,I spend all day with molesters, rapists, and abusers. I just don't need it 24/7

Just to be clear, my position is that BA can delete as they see fit. This is part of how freedom works.

Private and public forums are two very separate things.

The great thing about the site is that no one can force you to read/click on any specific article or forum post. So just stick to the stuff that suits you and don't worry about the other stuff. If on the other hand the mere presence of an article that you find to be too "left leaning" bothers you then maybe you're just telling on yourself. Whatever the case, you do you.

You shouldn’t have to deal with that Todd. It’s obviously predictable, but still bullshit. People need to grow the hell up.

In the case of Goose Island, I actually have posted I don't care who owns the brewery and I will continue to drink it as long as it's good beer. I don't think the Halls were exactly saints before they sold the brewery for that matter, but I still drank their beer.

As far as LGBTQ goes i am mostly supportive but there are controversies within the movement - puberty blockers, detrans, treatment of gender dysphoria in kids, etc. I don't think BA is the place for those discussions, not because it makes me uncomfortable (as you imply) but because I don't think this is the right venue. The thread is already breaking down into talk of things like the Confederacy and January 6th, which have little to do with beer.

Like I said, I wasn't accusing you specifically of duplicitous behavior. It was a general observation of behavior I've seen, and about people rushing into this thread who have never bothered to post elsewhere about "sticking to beer," simply because this is the topic (LGBTQ support) they dislike. They don't dislike the principle of not sticking to beer; they don't like it in this case.

I find you can learn a lot about a person by how - not how easily, but how - they are offended. If they aren't offended by mistreatment of minorities, women, or the gay/trans community, but are offended by the discussion? Not offended by violence, but are offended by kneeling? That's rather telling about a person's true moral character.

In other words, if someone doesn't care about injustices in the world, but strongly super duper cares a whole lot that you're bothering to discuss it? They care about the inconvenience of their NBA viewing experience being interrupted by some T-shirts, but don't care at all about the "inconvenience" of unarmed and innocent individuals being murdered? Those are some f'd up priorities in my opinion. If people are made uncomfortable by a discussion about social equality, then they probably need to be made uncomfortable.

You may be right that a beer forum isn't the right venue to have that discussion ... but it doesn't need to be. This article is about supporting the LGBTQ community within the beer and brewing community, and an opportunity to learn more about the history behind it for those who would like to learn about it. Those who would rather not read it simply don't have to; they can ignore it and move on. Instead, they choose to chime in here with hate and anger, and again, I find that rather telling.

(Full disclosure: I still buy Bourbon County and drink Goose Island, too. :grinning: )

In the parlance of the younger generations: ^^^This.

If someone dislikes the idea of a discussion about social issues on a beer site, why are they reading the thread? They're clearly not interested in reading the article and learning more - and that's fine! As you said, "You do you."

But that they feel the need to click on the thread and bring more division? Do they really click on every thread on BA, and point out whether or not they agree? Or are they really just revealing their own biases and bigotry by specifically choosing this moment to speak out?

I think @Todd 's inbox gives one a pretty clear answer as to how many people are motivated not by some sense of fairness, or "Just stick to beer!" honest disinterest, but rather by hate and ignorance. Not everyone, but far too many.

It is sad to attack others in this fashion, unfortunately the world’s full of people who hate from behind a keyboard. In my old age I’m a peacenik, I’ve seen enough violence to last me two lifetimes. I truly wish we really could just move forward and be nice. Amazing how well people respond to you when your nice and you’re respectful.

I, like yourself, have been a paying society member for many years. It’s certainly my right to give feedback to Todd and team on the content they provide and perceived direction of the site. Todd and crew have a track record of listening to their members...of course I’m just one person and I’m sure they are hearing opinions from many! They will need to weigh the inputs and make a business decision, and I will vote with my wallet.

But saying “don’t read it” or “click something else” is a bit disingenuous.

Translation: "Todd, stop supporting the LGBTQ community...or else."

Direction of this site? The direction is into the future and doing what's right. Not going backwards! Any type of hate/racism/discrimination is wrong and inhumane. We are all human beings. Treat others the way you want to be treated. And it's never too late to learn and grow as a human being. Did you also have an issue with Black Is Beautiful beer or with an article about Black Owned breweries?
