Brauerei Schloss Eggenberg -- Samichalus Classic (malt liquor)

    Revisited October 22nd, 2021

Clear, dark copper body with a thin, light khaki head. Sweet, spicy aroma. Sweet, spicy flavor; raisins and dates; anise and licorice; a bit boozy in the background. Heavy, oily mouthfeel; big residual sugar presence.

Although the label states this is "Malt Liquor", I have a feeling this is actually the doppelbock with a different label. It certainly tastes like a high-strength doppelbock in many ways - the sweetness and spiciness also suggests a winter holiday beer that the Classic Bier has had in the past.

Poured ata 47 F; bottle labeled as 'Samichlaus Classic Malt Liquor)

    --------------------------

    Original December 20th, 2014 ratings: 3.5 3.5 4.5 4.5 4.0 (aggregate score of 4.1)

Assuming my bottle -- labeled "Samichlaus Classic" is the same beer the other reviews are about. Bottled in 2012.

Very nice copper color but the thin, fizzy head nearly completely disappeared within a few minutes. There's a classic doppelbock sweetness in the aroma along with a plum and slight citrus-like fruit scent. Heavy, vinous feel; syrupy. Powerful sweetness and alcohol meld with the taste: raisins and apricots, lots of alcohol heat to balance out the immense sweetness; hard to differentiate between the alcohol burn and hop bitterness, but they're both present in the mix.

A somewhat underwhelming appearance and smell will surprise you once the taste and mouthfeel come in to play. For a 14% ABV doppelbock, though, I'd say this one is pretty decent. Plenty of doppelbock character abound in this heavy hitter. A must-try for doppelbock and big beer fans. Heck, I may spring for a four-pack and let 'em age for a year or so and see how this beer plays out with some time.

After a few losses with less-than-stellar offense, coach said that banging out some hits should be our focal point. So, I got to the field early for some pre-game BP.

I'll need to actually do a side-by-side to be sure, but I think that Focal Banger has outlasted the Heady at going on two months of age.

Yeah, a day off and takin' it easy... For real this time.
UA N/A Watermelon Gose for the win today....

Hope y'all are well, I'm doing absolutely NOTHING today other than picking up my racket packet and bib later. Did get a nice drop from Drizly from my brother (Beaux Freres OR Pinot Noir and some additional HA Burl).

I'll reacquaint myself with the real stuff tomorrow!
    Cheers...

Good afternoon, advocates. Getting into it with my current favorite beer. I would say all-time favorite, but that would be pretending that OG Alpine Nelson never existed. Either way, this is the ONE for me. Love it, love it, love it. Time to go crawl into the can. Cheers!

First off, my apologies to both Westmalle & St. Bernardus. I probably broke some unwritten rule here, but this was my only appropriate Belgian style beer glass. I'm trying to work my way through some Trappist beers. They have not been my cup of tea, but I certainly appreciate them. This Tripel from Westmalle checks in at 9.5% ABV. Drinks a lot more full bodied than it looks. Very effervescent. Typical banana-like esters. I know a lot of people like these during the Holidays with their meals. I'm trying to decide what this would pair well with food wise. Anyway, trying not to get hammered. Cheers all!

Hey, hey! Thanks to @Ocalafox I can say I've tried that and it's terrific! Btw, I figured you'd be more interested in this than most. Jeff Alworth, author of The Beer Bible, is going to be in Atlanta in Nov. visiting New Realm Brewing and having a sit down with Mitch Steele. If you're interested in the conversation, I'm sure he will post about it on his blog Beervana. Cheers!

Still on page one, BAs? On a Friday??? Let's work on that. :stuck_out_tongue:

    Lawson's Little Sip

The closest package store has a really good selection of craft beer, but IPA freshness can be an issue. The big brother SOS in the cooler, for example, was canned in May. Sip holds up well, but I'm not buying a 5 month old IPA with an unknown storage pedigree. Same with the G-Bot cans; I got so excited, only to see May 2021. :slight_frown:

Thankfully, these cans of Little Sip are just a month and a half old; much better.

    Cheers!

Good day Advocates! Thanks @Ozzylizard for todays thread. Got the hot peppers ground up. Thick as a wall today and still learning how to spell cayenne:stuck_out_tongue:. A bit over 2lbs!! Hot stuff! Grooving with these Summit Porters. Amazing level of toastiness in this porter. Quite lovely. Also rated some beers from Austria from way back. Cheers folks! Keep on smiling!

Just finished up work and dug into the box o goodies I got from @Ozzylizard in the recent NBS BIF. Starting off with Box Turtle from Oliver brewing in Bawlmer. It's a very tasty Kolsch dry-hopped with Citra.

Good afternoon fellow BA's! Another lovely day here in Western NC with temps in the upper 60's and intermittent sunshine.
Today i am going with a couple from Asheville's Green Man brewery with the first being a classic ESB style. It is always nice to circle back to the old styles occasionally to remind my pallet how good they can be. Would recommend this if you come across it!
    Cheers,
    Tom
