I wish more Poo-Bah’s would review beers. As our experts on this site I would love to read more of their options about actual beer reviews.

I used to but just kind of got burnt out/tired of reviewing.
I also feel like overall the site is lacking a lot of beers and reviews, and decided it’s not my job to remedy that. Used to add beers pretty frequently.
Feels like no one reads the reviews either.
Slowly transitioned to untappd for the majority of ratings.
That’s just a basic honest answer.

The majority of the top 100 Poo-Bah's have at least 2000 reviews.

    I mostly agree, but…

Buying into the fact this thread comes to me as a proxy for review vs rating, there is the fact that “poobah” is a tab/filter on beers. Given this, the site is, I think, allowing for people to more easily find an “experienced” reviewer with which they may connect with to perhaps trust when making beer purchasing decisions.

BA has made the decisions to have the filter as well as how to determine what shows up on the filter, so I can maybe see the angle the OP is coming from, even if it’s not the only way to look at it.

Well, of course they should. At the same time, I'm curious as to how one would accumulate the points required to reach the status without reviewing. in the Beer Karma Explained section, the very first thing is this: "Reviewing beers is the best way to accrue points." Then, what are the other options, beside place reviews, adding beers, and adding pics?

And then there’s also this (again, I am reading into to OP that the difference in question is reviewing vs rating)…

Not that I think you, in particular, are unaware of that thread.

I want to hear from everyone! Reviews are wonderful, and I do read them! If you are new to it, just give it a shot, it’s your opinion so there is no wrong answer, and this is supposed to be fun. Trust me some of my reviews are straight trash, doesn’t stop me from posting because I get more out of the beer experience by reviewing instead of just rating.

Yup. Even if you're reviewing a beer nearly identical to a hundred others you've had, and there are only so many ways to say the same damn thing, again. Taking the time to do it makes ya think about it, at least a little.

Yeah, what's up with that? Asks the guy with:
    BEERS: 0
    PLACES: 1*
*I tried to delete it like I did with the other dozen or so "now-closed/different management-owner" joints I once reviewed, but I can't!

My palette broke (it was old) and I got paint all over my new Red Wings work boots!

Exactly. I've spent 40 years in the beer and wine business and written thousands of reviews and ad pieces touting the beers I've sold and represented. Reaching some milestone and "status" on this sight determined by a nebulous numerical algorithm is the last thing on my mind. I love Beer Advocate for the serious number of bright people exchanging ideas about the beer world in general. Everyone that participates here does so for their own reasons.

Someone could reach poobah for a number of reasons. Reviews not being the only one of them. Typical for myself what I do is read a couple reviews good and bad to make a consensus but most of the time trying a beer for yourself is the only way to decide if you will truly like it or not.

I agree with you here. I very rarely read reviews before buying a beer. Generally, I’m looking at them while I’m drinking it or after I’ve had it to compare notes and see if I can pick up the things others have.

I used to have to review every new beer I tried and carried a notebook to every tasting and bar, and then spent time transcribing after each session. With Wi-Fi pretty much ubiquitous at taprooms now, I can bring my iPad and take notes when I go solo. I have a much more laid back approach to reviews now (e.g., previously mentioned solo visits, having a sip at night, or ticking a super rare beer). I review more or less to remember what I have had (Untappd is great, but it doesn’t help me remember the beer), but I feel like I have a really solid understanding of most styles and what I like, so don’t feel the need anymore. Also, I think my reviews probably read pretty much the same.
