Watching the markets going down hard right now. My wife just jokingly said .... Looks like we sold our house and moved here at the right time. I beg to differ, but we sorta did just kinda "Take the Money and Run".

    Cheers.

The three cover 3/5 of the Mayo part, with two more to go. Another 5 for the Cinco.

    Another day in the garden...

Did Pilsner Urquell always contain hop extracts? Cautiously trying to say that this beer tastes cheap but I can remember it was one of the best pilsner beers around here. Had the exact same cans 2 years before but unfortunately haven't checked the ingredients

Hello Advocates! Thanks @barneyrubble for todays thread. Stepping into the green today with a cold STP. Cloudy & cool today but no sky action in my area. Might be able to get a few yard tasks completed if rain holds off. Cheers!

@tolar111 - I dusted off the Walkman to listen to 91X, Tijuana, Mexico, while walking the streets of San Diego last trip. Better station than anything we have here, including WXRT.

Joining @DoctorZombies with a BA beer containing blueberries. It's one of the few times I went back and bought more of a release because it was/is that good. It's held on well now 3 1/2 years out, sadly my last can. Passed on a cellar review as it was a one off release.

The short answer here is I have no knowledge of Pilsner Urquell being brewed using hop extract.

    Longer 'answer' below:

During my tour of the Pilsner Urquell brewery in 2019 they did discuss the ingredients and process to brew the beer. As regards hops they emphasized they used Czech (Žatec region) Saaz hops and in a display area they had some whole (cone) hops in a barrel for people to see. I did not think to ask the tour guide what format of the hops were used in the brewing process.

For further discussion the word "extract" is not really a 'bad word'. Brewers will utilize hop extract in their brewing for specific reasons (e.g., to optimize beer yield, etc.) and there are high quality extracts available for sale with the customers mostly being commercial brewers but there are some available in smaller quantities for homebrewing. I have yet to use hop extracts in my homebrewing but that is mostly because I do not have any financial/commercial pressures while homebrewing.

Some further reading for the interested student:

P.S. More discussion about hop extracts:

“Fifty percent of the worldwide distribution of hop products can be assigned to hop extracts, including CO2 extract and advanced hop extracts,” says Tatiana Praet, hops lead scientist at Kalsec. “Brewers have been using advanced hop extracts for over 40 years because these ingredients provide many advantages such as bitterness addition, light stable bitterness, foam stability, unique hop aroma profiles, higher utilization of high-value hop components, and economic advantages.” Large brewers rely on these types of ingredients to help them ensure flavor consistency, one of the most important quality factors, says Praet. “In addition, we have observed a trend towards increasing usage of advanced hop aroma extracts by the craft brew industry. As the craft brew industry grows larger and competition increases, craft brewers need to be able to differentiate their beers by creating distinct flavor profiles and deliver consistency.”

One aspect from the above that ‘jumped out’ at me is: “help them ensure flavor consistency”. An important consideration for commercial brewing.

The below discussion is from an old (1997) article about Pilsner Urquell (bold by me)

“Saaz hops: Pilsner Urquell boils the wort for two hours and uses three additions of whole Saaz hops at a rate of 350 g/hL to bring the IBU level to 40 (18). The hops are grown in the nearby Zatec region of Bohemia. Hops are initially added into the sweet wort before it reaches a boil (first wort hopping); more hops are added about 80 minutes before the end of the boil, and the final addition is added about 25 minutes before the end of the boil. (Pilsner Urquell is not dry-hopped.) Alpha-acid levels in the Saaz hops during the past five years have averaged about 3.8% (18).“
