Hey all. My son enjoys going to King Richard's Faire when it is held in Carver, MA. He's not super into it like some who go. He doesn't dress up like a knight or take on a really shitty English accent. But it's fun for him to throw knives and shoot little bows and arrows. I'm mainly interested in watching him have fun and drinking beer. Their beer selection is, in a word, abysmal. There draft list this year mirrors what it was last year:

    Coors Light
    Shipyard Pumpkin
    Blue Moon

There's also an NA beer, a gluten free beer, and a cider. Offering those three beers, in 2022, is mind-numbingly bad. I get that there needs to be a Coors-Light type beer. Fine, keep it. But Shipyard Pumpkin and Blue Moon? Fuck me. At least get rid of one of those two. Let's put aside the fact that this is a renaissance fair and if they were truly trying to replicate what beer drinking was like during medieval times they would offer some very different options. Let's also acknowledge the fact that their job is to make money, so they aren't likely to put a draft line in for a smoked Helles beer, much as I would love that. But Jesus Fucking Christ, is it too much to ask for a Sam Adams Octoberfest? A Sierra Nevada Pale Ale? Hell, even regular Sam Adams Boston Lager would be fine. In fact, they used to pour Killian's at King Richard's Fair. I would take that again.

I emailed the fine folks at King Richard's Fair and gently suggested that they modernize their draft list a bit. Again, I know their job is to make money, not cater to beer geeks, so I tempered my tone and expectations. But I legit think that having better beer options would make them more money. The average beer drinker knows and likes much more beer now than they did even just five years ago. Especially beer drinkers in Massachusetts, where there are insanely good breweries.

In any event, the CEO emailed me back and said I am the first person in 27 years to ask for different beer selections. I was a bit amazed by this. I would imagine there are a number of people who are into renaissance fairs that also like good beer. Perhaps I am wrong.

I am wondering if there are any BAs who enjoy going/enjoy bringing their kids to King Richard's Faire. And, if you're willing to drop a note to the CEO supporting the push for better beer, here is their email address:

Tell them if they added Tree House Julius they'd quadruple their business in a week.

I imagine they'd want to keep the price and ABV reasonable, so I'd recommend:

-Jack's Abby Post Shift Pilsner, 4.7%
-Night Shift Whirlpool New England Pale Ale, 4.5%

My first taste of homebrew actually came from Renaissance re-enactor friends who would come over to watch movies and share their beer - they'd sit on the couch and weave chainmail links the entire time! :beers:

Are you permitted to bring your own beer? That is what I would do.

    Cheers!

I love that reply to you OP - hilarious.

These taps are blatantly bought and paid for. So first you'll need to find someone with a bigger pocketbook than the wholesaler currently writing those checks. A truly medieval state of affairs!

I would pass out with joy if post shift pils were available there.

    Well, that is unfortunate.

I strongly suspect you would not do this but...I would just bring my homebrewed beer and drink from an opaque mug:

That thought had crossed my mind too. Sadly, they don’t allow outside beverages of any kind. I remember going with friends when I was college and bringing a flask though, ha. Bit too old for that now, ha.

Yeah with most entertainment venues, if the food/beverages are being provided through a contract service like Aramark, you're probably SOL. Usually the best option is a "crafty" option that is owned by InBev or Molson Coors

Shipyard used to be partially owned by Miller, right? Are they still distributed by Molson/Miller Coors or whatever they are called?

They won't even let you bring in a water bottle?

Kudos to you for being a good father here, I suspect I would tell those organizers they could....

    Cheers!

I’ll be honest, no matter how much amazing beer I have, I still kind of love a blue moon at the right moment. It tastes good.

Real talk. They could so easily put mayflower porter up in there. It’d be a dream come true.

Glad to see this post, however, they do not care. KRF is fun, albeitly wildly overpriced. It would be nice to see some proper brew.

Very true. I remember a day where I crushed 8 Blue Moon's sitting down while pregaming for a rave. I thought I was fine, then I stood up and my world was spinning :grimacing:

I do hate it when events’ beer selection sucks, but sometimes foregoing beer for an afternoon, especially at a family friendly event, isn’t such a bad thing. That nice option you have in your fridge when you get home will only taste better.

semi-related, we used to take our kids to the cranberry festival in Carver, good family fun, nice area down there

Last I heard Colonial Beverage distributor held the rights. They are a Miller Coors house. Their crafty options are Castle Island, Two Roads, Long Trail… those would even be improvements over what is there. Best bet is to try to contact colonial beverage and send them a message and see what they say perhaps.
Sam and Sierra Nevada are distributed by L. Knife so you won’t see those most likely. I wouldn’t be surprised if they add White Claw this year because Colonial distributes it.
Killians if memory serves correctly wasn’t sending half barrel kegs anymore and they go thru far too much to poor from sixtels.

I hear ya. But I'm not a heavy drinker, so forgoing an afternoon of beer drinking is no big deal and I do it all the time. I also don't think beer consuming events and family friendly events can't co-exist. I figure, I'm gonna be there and it'd be nice to have a pint or two at the most, sure would be nice to have something decent. And, of course, if they don't upgrade the beer choices, then not drinking will be precisely what I do, ha ha.

Thanks for this info. I'd be thrilled to have regular Long Trail Ale. I still enjoy that beer.
