I had no IPA in the house, so while Mrs. Z is getting her hair done, I did a quick beer run to the TW…home now drinking Civil Society’s Fresh IPA:

[IMG] Tonight’s Blind Battle Beer Tasting Lineup:

    1) Klosterbrauerei Andechs Vollbier Hell (4.8%):
A German Helles with flavors of earthy and smooth grassy German biscuit malt, and smooth honeysuckle. A smooth, lightly sweet body.
    versus
    2) Weihenstephaner Original Helles (5.1%): A German Helles with flavors of pale German biscuit malt, honey, and a smooth, lightly sweet body.
    versus
    3) Hacker Pschorr Muncher Gold (5.5%): A German Helles with flavors of German bread malt, grains, yeast. Strong carbonation, and a crisp finish. (mismatched all 3 of these blind)

    4) Hop Butcher Mega Bite (7.5% canned 8/9/22): A NEIPA from Chicago with Citra and Amarillo for flavors of orange citrus, pineapple, with a light citrus-flower bite of the end.
    versus
    5) Toppling Goliath King Sue (7.8% canned 5/12/22): A hazy IPA from Iowa since 2014 that is brewed with Citra hops and has flavors of orange citrus, pineapple, and tropical mango. Smooth. (correctly matched these two blind).
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Winners:

    1) Andechs Vollbier Hell:
So hard to call a winner here. These were all fantastic. I think Andechs makes the best Helles though. Defines itself with a smooth and sweet honeysuckle flavor. Lower alcohol, but a sweet honey flavor and an incredibly smooth body. One of the best German lagers out there. Any of these three will steer you right.

    5) Toppling Goliath King Sue:
These are nearly identical. Mega Bite has just enough citrus rind to give it a "bite". A well-named beer. I actually think Hop Butcher has a slight edge here, but King Sue gets the win for being over 3 months older and still drinking like a King.

It’s just not comfortable outside weather yet here in SWFL…I like sitting amongst all our plants, but…about another 30 days or so when the daily highs drop into the mid 70s…Cheers gang!

Partially hazy, honey colored body; lively, coarse carbonation; one-finger thick head, off-white, semi-creamy, sticky, long-lasting. Nice, toasted malt aroma; cereal grain. Decent flavor; somewhat malty; low to moderate bitterness, more bitter towards the finish; buttery. Medium-heavy body; nice residual sugar density; feels a bit warm and sticky.

A fair enough extra special bitter. Nothing fancy yet quite drinkable.

Mountain Hops Brewhouse Bergfeier. A barrel aged Belgian Tripel that now has over a year on it.

Yeasty with candi sugar, caramel malt, fruity and so smooth for 12%abv. I gave it a 3.78 when I had it fresh. It tastes more like a 4.4 or so now.

    Prost!

After work beer, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Jackie McLean's Consequence spinning. Another one from that late 70's, early 80's Blue Note reissues series. Recorded in 65 and a pretty underrated hard bop session, with Lee Morgan and Billy Higgins.
