Tonight’s Blind Battle Beer Tasting Lineup:

1) Weihenstephaner Festbier (5.8%): A German Festbier with flavors of authentic German pale cracker and bread malt. Light floral notes
versus
2) Surly Oktoberfest (6.0%): A Festbier from Minnesota that has flavors of floral hops and bread and honeyflower malt flavors.
versus
3) Castle Danger Maple Marzen (5.7%): An Oktoberfest Marzen from Minnesota with flavors of toasted brown malt, bread malt, and sweet maple syrup flavors. Hints of roasted notes. Sweet.

4) Drekker Metaphase (8.2% canned 8/29/22): A NEIPA from Minnesota Citra & Nelson Sauvin for flavors of grapefruit citrus, green citrus, tropical pineapple with light vinous notes. Juicy.

5) 3 Sheeps Cosmic Punch (8.3% canned 10/7/22): A NEIPA from Wisconsin with Cosmic Punch yeast and Citra, Nelson Sauvin, and Galaxy hops for flavors of white grapefruit citrus, wild vinous yeast notes. Dry and clean.
(All beers correctly matched blind)

Winners:

1) Weihenstephaner Festbier: These three are pretty different so no real winner, but this is somewhat the OG of festbiers. Flavorful and authentic, yet light, clean and drinkable. Surly is certainly not as good this year as previous years. The Castle Danger Marzen showed some hints of roast which was unique and pleasant.

4) Drekker Metaphase: This one has improved slightly by giving it a little age. A little juicier with less of a bite. Nice showcase of the Citra and Nelson. Citrusy with enough Nelson to give it a juicy and tropical green and slight vinous flavor. Juicy and tropical. This one is starting to grow on me.

 

When I first reviewed this beer I was kind of down on it. Even though this can is older (from the same 6-pack) it seems better than I remember. One can left in the fridge, maybe I'll edit my review with it.

 

Home now from the pub, on my back patio (sunny, 80°, humid) drinking Other Half’s “Triple Mylar Dreams”, an oat cream TIPA brewed with El Dorado, Citra, Galaxy, Amarillo, milk sugar and oats:



Semi sweet, creamy tropical fruit cocktail with notes of melon and berries. Deceptively easy drinking at 11.3%. No bitterness. Could do without the lactose. I’ll probably have the shits all night…Cheers gang!

 

Bissell Brothers - Reciprocal (DDH IPA)

We have all made fun of @JamFuel for paying $15+ for a can of American hazy, but here I am in non-Scandinavian rural PA (bought this in a place about 1hr west of Philly) paying close to that price tag for this. My experience with Bissell hazies are not the best, but I admit that this one is actually pretty good.

 

Enjoying a Yuengling for round 3, nice palate cleanser before dinner.
