More Joni, and the last of my North Coast Pacific Magic IPA...for now.

Blue, Court & Spark, and Hejira always compete for my favorite Joni album and I can never say which one is  Hejira is also Jaco Pastoriius' best album, both in terms of the actual album and his individual playing (yeah I said it )

[IMG] Tonight’s Blind Battle Beer Tasting Lineup:

    1) Central Waters’ Oktoberfest (5.25%): An Oktoberfest Marzen from Wisconsin with flavors of vague bread and amber malts. Clean.
    versus
    2) Lakefront Oktoberfest (6.0%): An Oktoberfest Marzen from Wisconsin with flavors of rich bread malt, orange citrus. Smooth.
    versus
    3) Third Space Oktoberfest (6.0%): A Oktoberfest Marzen from Wisconsin with flavors of rich bread malt, caramel, and toasted notes.

    4) Toppling Goliath Radiant Haze (7.0% canned 8/11/22): A NEIPA from Iowa with Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo, and Sabro for flavors of juicy orange, pineapple, and orange flower.
    versus
    5) Pipeworks NvU vs the Haze (8.0% canned 8/12/22): A NEIPA from Chicago with flavors of orange citrus, mandarin orange, and zest. Relatively dry, clean, with a citrus rind astringency.
(mismatched #2 and #3 blind, correctly matched the rest)
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Winners:

    3) Third Space Oktoberfest:
The most flavor here. A robust toasted bread malt and caramel flavor. Yet carbonated enough to clean off the sweetness. I've gotten picky after trying so many. Not the best one out there, but better than average.

    4) Toppling Goliath Radiant Haze: This was the later batch they made in the summer. Classic TG orange citrus and flower flavors. Similar to King Sue but slightly more tropical. Spot-on from Toppling Goliath as usual. Hoping they bring this one back in the future.

    Ike's Place - Abilene, KS

Appearance same. smell same. Solid west coast IPA flavor, nice light malt base with a spicy hop flavor. Excellent WCIPA mothfeel.

Much improved on tap in Abilene, KS.

    4.0 3.25 3.25 3.75 3.25; overall: 3.35; rDev: -9.5%

    Bottle data: none.

A thick, frothy, lasting white head sits atop a perfectly clear, solid gold colored body. A so-so mix of pine and citrus hops along with a small note of caramel malts. The taste comes across with a watery mix malt grains and hop bitterness with the bitterness building to a pretty bold biting bitterness into the finish; somewhat of a citrus orange hint. Medium bodied; crisp, clean, dry finish.

A rather bland and uninspiring IPA. Granted, it's supposedly an English style and shouldn't be expected to have the pizzazz of an American west coast styled IPA, but this particular brew still lacks any real depth or character. It does have a decent hop bitterness (for the style) but otherwise has little going for it.

Salt City Brewery -- American IPA
    American India pale ale
ABV: 7.7%; pouring temperature: n/a; tap info: Ike's Place, Abilene, KS

Great dark gold body; fairly dense carbonation; thick, semi-creamy head, foam sheeting readily apparent. Low-key malt note in the aroma; a smidgen of spicy hop smell. Malt-forward flavor; a bit of diacetyl; minimal hop flavor or bitterness. Medium-heavy body; semi-crisp as there's a nice warm residual sugar undercurrent.

A good India pale ale. I need to research this one as it smacks of old school English IPAs more than anything else. Whatever the brewer's intent, I like it because it is more malt-forward than most offerings one finds in the US.

Pouring temperature: n/a; tap info: Ike's Place, Abilene, KS

    -------------------------------------------

Late note: a check of the brewery web site doesn't specify whether this is an English style IPA or not. It does mention Citrus and Mosaic hops, but I don't get any hop notes from those varietals.

Project Find the Limit No. 12 from Tree House. At the rate they keep pumping out this style of IPA, I'm not sure they'll ever find a limit. Still, a delicious beer. Thankful. Cheers.
