I've always enjoyed this thread, so let's get 2024 started! If you're going to grill a Wisconsin staple (brats), you should probably drink a Wisconsin beer. In this case, New Glarus Spotted Cow. Cheers!

Firing up the Webber for the first time in '24.

Got home from work, cracked a beer, realised I didn't have any fire starts. Had just enough petrol in the lawn mower jerry can.

Drinking an ALDI Fraser Briggs. Aldi Australia's Jane's Boags knockoff. It's cheap and fine when cold.

Isn't that a charcoal chimney in the photo? The point of which (at least, for me) is being able to light the charcoal without an accelerant like lighter fluid or ///shutter\\\ gasoline. (Not sure what a "fire start" is - but sounds like it could be what in the US is called lighter fluid or those little cubes of solid fluid that the Weber site above refers to as lighter cubes).

I use a blend of newsprint paper or newspaper/other plain paper and torn-up egg cartons - the coarse cardboard type, not the styrofoam ones  - and have no problem with getting a good fire going in minutes using real charcoal (not briquets).

Have always hated the smell of a neighborhood full of lighter fluid-lit fire fumes on a summer weekend. :grimacing:

    Good for you.

Yes, it's a charcoal chimney. It was a Thursday night, and en-route home I was informed by the wife she was having a couple girlfriends over. I was asked to cook burgers.

Yes, forgive the typo. Fire starters, the little white ones, are what I normally use, because it's quick and easy. I can't remember the last time I had a newspaper at home - or even read a newspaper. I wasn't prepared to jump back in to the car and go to the shops in any case, for fire starters, newspapers or whatever else.

So yes, I discovered I had nothing to light them with, and resorted to a ge the dri,zle of petrol to get it going.

And you know what, it worked just fine.

Also, we don't have polystyrene egg cartons here in Australia. They've always been cardboard.

Ha, ha. Yeah, that's a good point. I've always saved and recycled paper and cardboard, so I've got a few boxes of plain newsprint (some mail order firms in the US still use it instead of those annoying "peanuts" or inflated plastic bags), paper bags (getting rare in the US) and some junk mail newspapers, etc, I've set aside for the chimney.

Spotted Cow or any of NG's super chuggable lagers = the ultimate grilling beers. I have very fond memories of the era when I was travelling to WI frequently. The cookouts there are the best around.

As much as I'm excited for the anticipated snowfall we'll be getting here in the Northeast this weekend (and the winter beer line up I have planned), I'm already looking forward to spring time. When the weather turns warmer, I always reach for an ice cold Corona with lime or SN Pale ale. Love either of those while grilling plus they're great to incorporate into any sort of BBQ.

We have 6-10 inches of snow incoming tomorrow, grilling won’t be happening anytime soon. Troegs Sunshine Pilsner is my usual go to grill beer tho.

It is a great classic combo in WI - did it a couple times while camping there in 2021.

Whenever I`m grilling it has to be Pabst Blue Ribbon. First I boil the Brats in onions and Pabst Blue Ribbon, then sip Pabst out of a cooler filled with ice while the Brats are on the grill.
