Can someone help solve this mystery. My brother bought a 6 pack of Fatheads Headhunter at a Sheetz convenience store in PA. He noticed that the Headhunter label on the can wasn't flush to the top and had a different color label underneath. He was able to peal off the Headhunter label and underneath was Madtree's Phantom Forest and under another Fathead's label was Madtree's Summer Camp Hazy IPA. My brother drinks Headhunter fairly regularly (he never had MadTree beers before) and he thinks these were Headhunters but does anyone know what is going on here with labeling over top of another brewers cans?

I have been working through a HH variety pack this weekend. I remove the wraps/labels from cans if possible before putting them in the recycling. I've noticed that a few of the HH cans have a Boulevard seltzer can hiding under the wrap. I'm unaware of any partnership between Fat Head's and Boulevard so I'm assuming that maybe Fat Head's (and others I'm sure) sometimes purchase printed cans from vendors on the cheap that are excess from canning runs of now discontinued beers, etc. Possibly there is some purchasing between brewers when there are excess printed cans. Fat Head's seems to use wraps on all their cans so it would make sense that they buy overstock since they are going to cover it anyway. This is all just speculation on my part.

I think this is the answer. I think there was a similar thread like this 5-6 years ago, and I think it also involved cans/labels from Fat Head's.

This can was consumed in October 2023. All six were the same.

    Enjoy

This is really strange, I wonder if this is due to availability more than cost? It seems like problems with label adhesion or other issues might make it more cost effective to just use a new can unless new cans weren’t available at the moment.

Does anyone here know if dented cans can go on the line, or do cans need to be in more or less perfect shape prior to filling?

I THINK i've seen people talk about this before... usually just means excess cans have been purchased from somebody else.... DON'T HOLD ME TO THAT. :flushed:

I think you are circling the issue. It’s due to availability of cans that are acceptable for filling. Since Fat Head’s will be adding their own label, they are just buying up other producer’s can overage. It likely this is good from a bottom line perspective, not strange at all. They probably are not expecting you freaking nerds to peel the packaging off. :stuck_out_tongue:

Makes me wonder what Darwin was drinking when he posted his glowing review of Head Hunter ("THE GREATEST BEER OF ALL TIME!")

I mean, c'mon, folks - that's the simply explanation. Excess or unwanted cans purchased from the can manufacturer or another brewer. Previously, before the sticker or shrink wrap labels, they'd have to be destroyed & recycled but it was common for the wrong brand's crown cap to find it's way into the hopper on the bottling line, either from the same brewery or the crown manufacturer.
"Oh, NO! I've got a bottle of Budweiser with a Miller crown! WHAT DOES IT MEAN!"

Jus' following the brewers' suggestion, in order to help the guys down at the recycling plant who have to clean the sticky stuff off the aluminum shredding machinery.

This is what drunks in the industry call an Easter egg - now that sports team messaging in date printings have become non-innovative.

Fat Head’s has used Ommegang cans in the past as well.

TIL new york setlzer makes hard seltzer! I loved this stuff as a kid.

Also, wasn't there a shortage of cans and ball was making brewers by larger minimum lots? Could be a result of that. One of the local breweries has "relabeled" cans but they are their own beers.

Why start there? Why not tell him about the conspiracy that it is actually another brewery’s beer and Sheetz is lying to him.

That’s hilarious, because obviously that’s where the thoughts were going. Throw away the beer conspiracy tin foil hats on this one.

I remember seeing a video where a can was filled, capped and then labeled. Obviously these cans were labeled prior to filling, so that’s what I found strange. it seems like it makes more sense to fill a can that is pressurized and would not bend during the labeling process. I’m sure there are several hundred different ways to can beverages though.

So I'm at an educational thing with one of the Fat Head's brewers. He happened to mention that they buy cans because it's "more sustainable.

Dumb thing, I know it's already been figured out, but interesting that it came up. He mentioned that the flagship beers like Sunshine Daydream use the more expensive labels.

A lot of the canned beers I've bought from Lupulin the last two years have stickers over a printed can, one of their own beers. I'm thinking that when someone ordered the printed cans they must have ordered way too many, like an order of magnitude. They've been using up these old cans for a couple of years now, maybe longer because I only noticed it when I started peeling labels.

My Kinder egg had a Great Lakes. Can someone well-versed in Head Hunter collectibles tell me if I got an Uncommon or Rare?
