That's like an NA beer for you LOL! Good one for sure!

I'm enjoying a nice Pale Oat Lager from TRVE in Asheville, a flyweight at 4.0 abv but man a lot of flavors packed in as this is very biscuity with a nice lemongrass hopping. Would have again!
    Cheers!

Is there a story behind that Bernie Wrightson ripoff label?

All new to me @steveh . Instagram post from the art director at TRVE Denver, Sean Maher, who claims all the artwork is original.

Well, I didn't say it wasn't original art, just highly influenced style from another artist.

Califormulation American Pilsner from Barebottle Brewing in San Francisco

Inviting aroma of melon and Concord grapes. Biscuit taste with fruit. Mellow malty start with a tangy finish. Flavors of grapes, and white wine. Overall this is an extremely drinkable hoppy Lager. All the details of hops etc in the second photo.

That's cool that they put a 5-gallon recipe on the can and attribute it to its creator. Maybe a homebrewing contest at the brewery?

I wonder why this is labeled as a Pilsner. From your description, it doesn't sound like any pils/pilsner I've ever tasted. I assume the brewer figured that by designating it as a "west coast" pilsner, that gave him carte blanche to make whatever he wanted. Still seems a bit odd.

Not trying to be critical... just curious as to why the brewer decided that calling this beer a Pilsner was an appropriate designation.

I am not a fan of this new alleged style name (i.e., West Coast Pilsner) but breweries will do what they deem necessary to sell product. The cynic in me thinks that the breweries think that the term “Pilsner” is appealing to craft beer consumers and will help them sell beer (i.e., generate revenue).

From a quick web search: “A West Coast pilsner is a hoppy, American-style lager that's brewed with a pilsner malt base and Pacific Northwest hops.”

So, the fact they feature Pilsner Malt yields “Pilsner”?

And I suppose you could include hops from Australia (e.g., Galaxy) and New Zealand (e.g., Motueka, Nelson Sauvin, etc.) to the list beyond “Pacific Northwest hops”?

    Cheers!

Hoppy Lager? Cold IPA brewed with Lager yeast? ABV is 5.9%. Yeah, the "Fill in the Blank" Pilsner is getting to be a big tent. Always room for more camel noses!

I don't think it's a marketing gimmick of sorts or anything to "sell beer". Its an informative designation. It's a west coast pilsner = a light-bodied low abv hoppy brew. It makes perfect sense to me. Nothing to be a fan or not a fan off. They're just stating facts and not trying to dupe consumers into purchasing product.

And thus make 2025 the year of the lager :beers:

One of my favorite new beers from my favorite brewery is this one, marketed as a west coast pilsner, since its on tap debut they've brewed three batches so it is definitely selling well. This goes back to your statement @JackHorzempa but I think this is selling because it is such a great and well made beer. It started on tap only and I shared feedback and the long time bartender said something like "yea its been selling really well and people seem to love it, it'll probably see cans next," it's seen cans twice now within a few months.

    ----------

I agree with your statement @FRANKHAZE, and I'm not one to usually embrace these new styles names but to me if it better describes what the beer is then I think it is smart. I don't like IPL because the abv is lower, 5.2 %, it is all pilsner malt and hopped with cascade, chinook, centennial, and a riwaka dry hop.

Its a pils with everything I love about west coast IPA, in short the perfect hoppy beer for me; citrus and pine front and center, crisp clean bite of bitterness, hint of modern dank from the riwaka; which personally I could do without but it doesn't detract too much to me; dry hop it with chinook and I may hit hop nirvana on this beer.

5.9 is actually high for a Pilsner. But maybe California is rewriting the rules?:grin:

As has already been discussed, at 5.9% ABV this beer is quite high in alcohol for a Pilsner.

    Cheers!

What would you prefer? West Coast Session IPA? To me that sounds worse

I have no response here. I am just not a fan of "West Coast Pilsner". Regardless of what other terminology I could come up with, the brewery marketing folks will decide how to label their products.
