I posted this hoppy dark lager last year, and it wasn't very hoppy then If I remember correctly. I don't detect any hoppiness with this one. It's a tasty dark lager, though.

    OEC Brewing Oolong Kolsch

A top-fermented lager. Brewed with oolong tea and tangerine peel. I felt dirty putting this in a Stange, but I ultimately wanted an excuse to use one of my (too many) Kolsch glasses. I hated this beer. Muddy flavor, slick, and an odd fermentation character.

    Jack’s Abby Intrepid Traditions Dunkel

This is more like it, but their packaging is getting weird. Pumpernickel. Dry for its type.

Kolsch is close to my heart and Dunkel is a style I oddly don’t click with. On the flip side, I don’t really trust OEC for lagers (I’m more drawn to their ales), and Jack’s Abby is one of the few craft brewing companies that I enjoy trying lagers from (even if I don’t 100% trust them either). In this case, my brewer bias beat my style bias (but in all fairness, the OEC beer shouldn’t be called a Kolsch anyway).

I want a chestnut tree in my back yard, a gentle breeze and a pleasantly warm day plus a source for kellerbier. Pretzels and meat would be fine too, along with some fresh-baked bread (preferably rye with caraway seeds) and butter.

I read it and yea all it made me want to do was beer there with a beer in hand. I hope one day to experience all of the above quotes :beers:

So Chris, what do you think of Troegs and Nugget Nectar?

    Cheers!

P.S. My wife and I got together with another couple/friends this earlier this evening for some beers and dinner. I had draft Nugget Nectar there.

That’s the strangest off-topic transition.

Nugget Nectar never clicked with me. I grabbed one can this year and actually disliked it - which surprised me. Didn’t like the hop character. What about you?

    :+1:
I thought the draft pint I had lacked hop character, it had zero (and I do mean zero) hop aroma. Either you and I have diametrically opposite palates or your batch and my batch were very, very different.

    Cheers!

Just drank the new, at least to our area, Sam Adam's American Light; I thought it was quite good.

As someone who enjoys this style, the local craft examples at least, I will definitely purchase a six pack in the future when the mood strikes me. It has a nice light touch of hop character both in taste and feel that are enjoyable and add to its drinkability IMO; sweetness is light and dries out pretty nicely, finish has a nice bite to it that I enjoyed, at only $2 more a six pack this very much beats out the usual macros if you ask me.

Have a good week everyone :beers:

Was excited to try this one and it did not disappoint! Is it the best lager I’ve ever had: no. Is it a good light lager option that tastes better than any major AAL: yes. Not terribly priced either. Definitely has that corn / corn ethanol thing going on but I liked it. Cheers!!

I'll be very curious to see how well this does for Samuel Adams. My impression is that fans of the style are usually very conscious of price and caloric impact. I suspect a couple bucks more a 6 pack might be a pretty significant impediment for many light beer drinkers, as would be the 115 calories it packs (when compared to the bud lights, coors lights and mich ultras of the world).

I've no doubt that it's a better and more flavorful beer, but I'm not sure how important that is to most fans of the style.

Gotta wonder if this isn't the same Light beer they used to market. Same ABV, if nothing else.

For what it's worth, Mr. Google seems to suggest that SA light is still being brewed, and that the abv. and calorie count for it are slightly different (4.3% and 120 calories). However, it's not listed on the SA website, and BA lists the beer as retired. So who knows. Maybe just in select markets?

OTOH -- Mr. Google is often unreliable.

I haven't seen the "original" Sam Light in years, but yeah -- maybe I'm in the wrong market. I think I'd trust the Same website, though. After all, why have 2 light beers in competition?

@AlcahueteJ -- anything to report from ground zero?
