It's getting ridiculously cold and extremely windy. We have another PITA day shaping up for Thursday with 1 to 3 inches of snow in the morning and then turning to rain and ice. I'm trying one of these Athletic Free Wave Hazy IPA's at the moment.

 

70s on Monday gave way to 40s on Tuesday.

1) Andechs Weissbier Dunkel (5.0%): A German Dunkelweizen with flavors of cocoa, caramel, bread spices, and dark fruit.
versus
2) Weihenstephaner Hefeweisbier Dunkel (5.3%): A German Dunkelweizen with flavors of orange spice, caramel, bread, and yeast. (Correctly matched the two blind)

Dunkelweizen Battle. I do this one a couple times each year. First is Andechs, the #3 rated dunkelweizen on BeerAdvocate.. Some bread, dark cocoa, caramel, and dark fruits. Smooth. Outstanding.
Next is Weihenstephaner, the #1 rated dunkelweizen on BeerAdvocate. Pours much lighter. Much more Hefeweizen yeast and bread flavors. More orange citrus, and not as dark. Leans more like a hefeweizen to me.
Andechs gets the win for me on this one with the more complex dark flavors a dunkelweizen should have. The only one I've rated higher is Ayinger, but I'd have to try them side-by-side.
Winner: Andechs Weissbier Dunkel

Tried that yesterday for the first time, another blessing from Toppling Goliath.

 

Could not agree more. It should come out on top of some of your head-to-head battles.

 

1) Phase Three Out For Delivery (7.8% canned 12/18/24): A NEIPA from Chicago with Centennial and Simcoe for flavors of yellow lemon, orange, pineapple, papaya, and mango.
versus
2) Hop Butcher Best Buds (8.0% canned 11/19/24): A NEIPA from Chicago with Simoe and Moteuka for flavors of orange citrus and zest, tropical green melon, and some lime. (Correctly matched the two blind)

Chicago NEIPA battle, always feel like I should tag @ChicagoJ in these. Phase Three vs. Hop Butcher. Both have a good dose of Simcoe. First is Phase Three Out For Delivery. Simcoe and Centennial, more American IPA hops but in a New England IPA. Bright lemon, pineapple, even some apricot from the Centennial. Excellent showcase of flavors here.
Next is Hop Butcher Best Buds. Simcoe plus some Moteuka. Nice orange, green melon, some lime and fresh berries. Tropical, clean and smooth. Nicely done as well.
Phase Three is hard to beat when it comes to NEIPAs and they consistently show they put out some of the best in Chicago.
Winner: Phase Three Out For Delivery
