Do Bourbon County Stout and KBS just dominate other bourbon barrel stouts?

Yeah - it's one you need to have alone. It is very thin and lacks barrel character when up against the others. For a nice, rich coffee stout with slight barrel notes, by itself - I love it.

I absolutely loved BCBS, trying it for the first time this year! I have a nice assortment of Bourbon Barrel Aged Stouts right now, I just need some KBS! Hopefully distribution makes to little ole Roanoke in April!!

I would rather go for Big Bad Baptist in that case. Even Speedway stout with a splash of bourbon is better than KBS, IMO.

I'd take a Parabola anyday and twice on Sundays over KBS...It would be a toss-up between BCBC and Parabola...Now if they bottled Apple Brandy Hunahpu's, that's a different story...

    Cheers!

Parabola has too much of that "tobacco" flavor in it for me.

Parabola and Uncle Jacob's are the two best for me, followed by BCBS. KBS is not in the discussion, in my opinion.

BCBS is tops for me and Parabola is a close 2nd. I've got some BBPt5th on the way, so I'll have to revisit that soon. As far as KBS goes... highly overrated IMO.

I would put Old Hickory Event Horizon up there as well, very delicious brew.

I completely agree with you...I rather have regular old Founders Imperial Stout anyday over KBS...I've have KBS several times by itself and in tastings and it just doesn't do it for me...Same goes for CBS, just not feelin' it...

    Cheers!

I think Parabola absolutely obliterates BCBS.

I used to live within their distro, but last year, I only got 1 bottle for $11.99...

This. I mean they aren't necessarily off the shelf beers (although BCBS may become one), they aren't terribly hard to get. Yes there are the truck chasers to always arrive and wait at beer stores for KBS but in reality it seems like you can easily attain KBS the weekend it comes out if you do your homework and spend a couple hours driving (not driving a couple hours to a store but rather driving to several stores around the area for a few hours on a Saturday). Realistically I think we would see KBS and BCBS dominated by other beers (BA DL, Bourbon County variants, Damon, Parabola,...) is they were in 12oz bottles and easily available but they just dont have the numbers that KBS and BCBS do hence the reason why these two are always wanted and usually two of the first wants for new BA's that are just starting to learn about beer.

Thanks to this thread I have added 5+ beers to my wants list. Thanks everyone!

I am fairly new to the barrel aged stout game. I've had the pleasure of trying Apple Brandy Huna... absolutely mind blowing. Parabola is fantastic and is right on par with BCBS. BA Boris, while good is not at the same level. CW BBS is fantastic but a different brew than Parabola and BCBS and thus shouldn't really be compared apples to apples.

Still waiting to try my first KBS along with the now added wants of Big Bad Baptist, Event Horizon, Uncle Jacobs, etc...

    Great thread

KBS is my all time favorite beer. That said, Parabola and Black Xantus are not far behind. I like my BA stouts with some coffee. I love BCBS as well (especially BCBCS), but those are currently my top 3.

Never stop seeking out new things to try. At one point in life, that "new thing to try" was KBS/BCBS.
