Today I’m drinking one heck of a head-banger, Sierra Nevada Atomic Torpedo Imperial IPA. This is a monster of an IPA, and at 9.2% ABV, you aren’t drinking too many of these unless you are crawling home!

Atomic Torpedo Imperial IPA is a very boozy brew, I’m picking up the alcohol a lot more than yesterday’s Big Little Thing 9.5% Fuzzy Wuzzy.

There’s a classic hop load on this big guy - Cascade, Centennial, Magnum, and Mosaic hops – and something I hadn’t guessed, a honey addition to the beer wort. Honey is sometimes used for light flavoring to a beer, but the honey essence usually gets consumed by the brewer’s yeast unless really finessed. Sometimes it is very late addition to the boil to get around this. Honey is nearly 100% fermentable, so there really isn’t a lot of “essence” left!

As this brew was originally released as an 8.2% ABV brew, bumping it up to 9.2% might account for some of the honey additions, possibly raising the ABV while lightening up the beer SRM and body at the same time. The higher ABV appears to have a negative effect on head, head retention and lacing to some degree.

Another great IPA by Sierra Nevada! Make sure you have a ride home!

 

Not quite @Danmullens1 level but it's 18 with a 5 degree wind chill. Kind of weather that makes the grill act weird. Taters with some chicken drums and turkey tenderloin to follow. And a Hamms. Cheers!

Fernson Snow Eater Stout 5.5% ABV. Pours black with a one-finger beige head that left real nice lacing. Aroma is chocolate malt. Taste is malty, faintly bitter, metallic. Decent moderately thick and creamy mouthfeel, overall very good. Real nice low-ABV non-add-junk stout.

Goldfinger Vienna Lager. Great malt complexity with a earthy hop character. Crisp, yet soft and luscious feel to this one, which along with the malt depth sets this one apart from the others. Goldfinger is on another level when it comes to lagers.

 

Grinding. Love it!
