PBR drinking wife had never heard of Country Joe, she was five or six years old when Woodstock happened. She shed tears when I made her listen.

    Hey look, it’s BOCK BEER!

I know what you’re thinking… Bock Beer, that’s the swill from the bottom of the vat cleanout!

NOT TRUE! I guess there is some confusion here in the United States. A lot of this has to do with what were (then) common products being lost during the prohibition and post-prohibition period. So much beer knowledge was lost. The remaining post-prohibition breweries really put out what we would consider now a monolithic product for many years.

A good example of this is Bock Beer. Back in the day when Beermeister32 was just a sipper, “Bock Beer” would show up in the beer case. Nobody really knew what it was. The old 11-ounce stubbies or other 12-ounce long necks would have their regular labels “overprinted” with the words “BOCK BEER” across them, usually in red ink. It was usually a seasonal beer. You could tell it wasn’t regular production at all. It might have been stronger or a slightly darker – whatever it was, this wasn’t regular production!

All of us and other fellow 14-year old geniuses would be standing around outdoors in the cold, stomping our feet to stay warm and blowing on our hands, pontificating life. We were talking about cars we hadn’t driven, beer we hadn’t drank and girls we hadn’t dated. We really were more talkers than doers at that age. That’s when my buddy Eric confided in me that “Hey, you know that stuff is the leftover junk at the bottom of the tank, right?” It might have well been words from on high. “Of course, that’s what it is!”…. and that’s exactly what it became from that point forward!

Into the future several decades - Beermeister32 is sorting out the beer world and comes across the true meaning of Bock Beer. Bock beer actually originates from the town of Einbeck, Germany. The word “Bock” is more or less spun out of the word ‘Beck,” and refers to a seasonal and slightly more alcoholic version of their regular Lager - and has a distant relationship to goats! Yes, I said GOATS! “Der Bock or Ziegenbock!!!” That being the case, the past couple centuries, any time a German brewer would release a Bock Beer, it usually had some rendition of goats on the label!

Bock is a slightly bigger, fuller, darker, higher ABV variation of what otherwise might taste like a standard Helles lager. I’ve had a number of them and you would be hard pressed to think they were much more than a Helles on steroids or a bigger Export beer, but keep in mind, these beers were developed in different parts of a country with large distances between them and not much more than horse drawn wagons to take you from one region to another. Historical similarities do show up periodically.

Today’s Bock is pretty tasty! The 500 ml can is a "can of confusion" however! Brewed according to the Reihheitsgebot, the Bavarian 1516 Beer Purity Law, most frequently acknowledged in the South, it is a Northern brew out of Berlin, Germany. Not a Goat to be seen on the label! Since 1237, brewed by Privatbrauerei Eibau in Eibah, Germany, near Dresden. Wait, Privatbrauerei in 1237??? Hmm.. Well, Eibau or Berlin, what is it? That’s quite a distance. Me befuddled…

    Great beer though…. Prost!
