This is an interesting observation. I've tried this BBA Narwhal recently and found it to be overly boozy and hot. I've found that overchilling beers tends to hide the heat from the alcohol. So while I'd agree you can improve the drinkability of BBA Narwhal and Backwoods Bastard, the premise seems to be the same: Freeze it to lessen the alcohol perception. That's fine, but it also dampens the flavor, so not really what I'm going for in the BBA beer category.

I’ve been on a big Enegren kick this past week and for good reason – This brewery out of Moorpark, California is cranking out some of the finest European style brews currently being produced in California and there’s a lot of them!

Produced with Munich, Vienna and Pilsner malts, Enegren’s Oktoberfest pays homage to the pre-1970’s Oktoberfests that go all the way back to Bavarian Prince Ludwig’s wedding in 1810. These are Märzen, or Märzenbiers, literally “March beers,” brewed in (when else,) March or thereabouts - and lagered in straw and ice-packed caves all summer to be enjoyed during the Oktoberfest celebration in the fall.

What, you expect Enegren to have straw and ice-filled caves? Well, refrigerated storage is one concession to the Modern Age, as evidenced by the expansive and temperature-controlled Beermeister32 Bierhoard, however the lagering period still exists, and really cleans these Lagers up! Oktoberfests are a big hearty brew, but totally clean – perfect for chugging in large festival quantities with reckless abandon in your favorite Maßkrug in front of fellow inebriates! Delicious!

Enegren’s contribution to Oktoberfest drinking partiers and heathans is a 5.5% ABV, hop-constrained 23 IBU Lager. It’s perfect for Brats, Hähnchenschnitze, Spaetzle and chugging…. Prost!

A German Spring release favorite right here and so stoked to see this hit the shelves! Totally not the right style glass but who cares, less glassware I have to hand wash (and all about that ). $14.99 for a 4 / pk:

vs. $185k for entry level pricing.

The difference between pronouncing it with an "I" vs an "A"? About $184,985.01. Saving money already! = What...A...Deal!!

    :heavymetal::smiley::beers:!!

I completely agree. I opened today’s BBA Narwhal at 46 degrees and allowed it to warm, so not very close to freezing, but great beers reach their full potential at warmer temperatures. Lesser beers need have certain flavors “dampened” as you put it. I poured my previous BBA Narwhal at 62 degrees, and found it to be too boozy.

I’ve noticed this trend regardless of the style. Take Lucky Lager for example. If I guzzle one at 33 degrees I can tolerate the brew. Meanwhile, if I drink one above 40 degrees I get a putrid apple flavor (“flavour” since it’s Canadian?).

I also recently purchased an assortment of Revision IPA’s and while the better ones were delicious at all temperatures, the poorer ones needed to be consumed at cooler temperatures to hide their sweetness.

I’m still enjoying my BBA Narwhals, but not as much as the original Narwhal or my favorite BBA beer; Dragon’s Milk.

    Cheers! :beers:

Okay, going to give this another chance as I had a whole 4 pack sitting around. I've yet to get through an entire glass of this beer because I just didn't like it. I like the original Narwhal, but this one strikes me as a boozy mess. Maybe it will strike me differently tonight. I find it excessively bitter compared to the original.

My initial reaction so far - blech!

Out of curiosity, about what temperature are you pouring it at? I totally agree with yours and @defunksta’s assessment of the booziness, but thus far I’ve found the BBA Narwhal to be a little too sweet as well. In my mind it could use some bitterness!

    Cheers! :beers:

Probably our last fire of the Spring season - Head Hunter:

It’s 69° with a breeze this evening, quite pleasant to si outside. The little bit of smoke from the fire keeps the mosquitos at bay. After sunset we’ll hit the hot tub. Cheers y’all!
