I didn't want to flood the forum with brewery closing threads...so might as well add this as well... Platypus is closing at the end of May, like in a couple of days... https://www.chron.com/food/article/houston-platypus-brewing-restaurant-closing-22232044.php Rumor has it, the brands will still be contract brewed somewhere and be served at a new restaurant at some point...but I don't knows if what I heard is accurate...they did say "And there is a next chapter. Behind the scenes, something new is already in the works, building on what we've started here." So who knows, can't say I have thought about or visited at all since they first opened...(Edit: They did mention the restaurant at the end of the article, that was added after I first saw and read it) And I haven't had a thing from Southern Star in years either...I use to get Pine Belt by the case...oh well.
I enjoyed the Buried Hatchet, but haven’t had it in awhile. Sad to hear of so many Houston area places closing.
Buried Hatchet was solid. Black Crack, which I *think* was BBA Buried Hatchet, was an awesome early local BBA Stout in the greater Houston region. I'll always have a deep and abiding fondness for Pro-Am 2012, which was the best IPA brewed in Texas at the time (this was pre-Yellow Rose). I think it ultimately became Valkyrie, but they never recaptured the magic of that original beer. Bombshell Blonde was always solid, and most of my home brewing efforts were inspired by that beer (I liked brewing crowd-pleasing blonde ales). They were up in Conroe, and I lived in Houston, so I never visited them. I still bought their beer all the time and I'm sad to see them go. They were a great brewery in the 2010s and they had a great run. I'm glad I got to enjoy their beers for many years.
As others have said, the Pro-Am 2012 was a fantastic IPA. When it came back as Valkyrie it just wasn’t the same. buried hatchet is good, and I like the BA version they just put out, too.otherwise their beer was solidly unremarkable. It wasn’t bad, but nothing set any of them apart. being out in Conroe probably hurt them in terms of missing out on higher margin on premise sales. One wonders if a satellite location in town would have helped? Or expedited the sinking? Anyway. A bummer to see such a legacy brewery go down.
