    Hi all,

I got a Sam Adams Winter variety pack as a gift and am curious about aging some of the beers. Has anyone tried to cellar Old Fezziwig, Holiday Porter, Winter Lager, or Chocolate Bock before? Is it worth trying?

You'll want to ask the folks in the Cellaring forum.

Yikes - I didn't even know there was one. I'll do that right now instead. Mods, feel free to delete this thread.

You definitely need to ask yourself why you're cellaring a specific beer. Is it because you think it'll improve on its taste/flavour/mouthfeel? Or is it because you don't feel like drinking it right now? It's an important question to ask yourself when it comes to these things.

Because I don't feel like drinking it right now, and I've always wanted to dabble in cellaring beer. Thought this would be a good start to try it with some spicy winter beers I landed on by surprise.

I found a few SA beers in the back of the fridge and where I used to keep some beer. They did not improve. They got much, much worse. Definitely drain pours.

Generally you want to cellar beers that are 8% and above, and either a quad, imperial stout, or sour.

None of them are anywhere close to that.

    So, no.

Thank you for the advice. Looks like I'll be drinking some Christmas beer the next few weeks.

Had both Chocolate Bock and fezziwig with 2 years and they drank well, but it would be crazy to do so with intent.

Yeah everything in those sampler packs are usually below 7%. Although old fez might be interesting...

My Anchor Christmas bottles are still holding up quite well

This is a bad place to start cellaring. A couple of those will hold up alright, but they won't improve with age, which is the point of cellaring.

Really? I have a couple bottles from 2011 I got on sale (in 2012 lol) and I've been kind of skeptical about them. Now I'm looking forward to it. I guess the power of suggestion is really easy on me...

I just drank a 2010 and it was excellent... and little lost on the spiciness but delicious.

These are probably best fresh but Fezzi may be worth expirementing with.

Sam Adams beers are not the beers you would want to cellar these have a 6 month shelf life if you want to cellar a SA try the imperial stout or wee heavy
