I agree with @Prince_Casual and @CCBone that the ABV of the beer is a major contributor to whether it tastes like a booze bomb. I generally personally prefer barrel-aged beers on the lower ABV side, but they can be difficult to find. I think brewers favor using higher ABV base beers for barrels because it does somewhat mimic the liquor flavor and there's less chance of an infection spoiling the batch.

Along this line, I found the Xocoveza Charred to have pretty subtle barrel flavors (which allowed the spiced stout to lead the flavor profile)... not sure how available it is, but I've still got it on some shelves in Austin.

Nope, it's also pretty rare to see it included. Also, quite frankly 100% barrel aged isn't always a good thing, plus sometimes the ABV goes nuts in there and it comes out too high. For me it's the end product that matters the most, so if it isn't 100% barrel aged, but tastes great than I am cool with it.

Totally, Yeti is a good example because it says Oak Aged, however some variants specifically say barrel aged. Both are great mind you!
