Well I haven't been to TFS just yet, but I'd like to go just to see what their place is like.

As far as what we're paying here locally, pints of IPA, Porter and such from a local Texas brewery can be had in DFW for $3-6 depending upon the brewery, whether or not it's happy hour, etc. I'd say $5 is average.

Yes, that's true that those beers are at those prices. Russian River's sours are also in the $15 range for 375ml.

No, I agree with that. It sounded like you had been there a couple of times so I figured I would ask for your impression of prices at TFS.

I would say $3-6 is perfectly acceptable. Anything above 6 for a non-specialty local is too high.

I've seen late 90's vintage Thomas Hardys sell for $18-20 in bars, $25+ for early-mid 90s. That one is worth every penny.

I agree, some are worth it. Hell, I'll buy Older Visc again. Its a top tier BB stout IMO but I just won't do it that often. Beatification was definitely worth every penny as well. Red Poppy not so much. Oh yeah, Lost Abbey Angels share is $16 as well and I'd rather have 2 BB for the price of one Angels Share but thats just me.

I'm sure I've paid much more for a 12 oz beer and it probably won't be my last time.

This. Like i said previously, I have been there once and they had $2.50 Ten Fidy. Obviously, I had no reason to complain that day.

Man, I'm catching on late to this thread, but that is an insanely unfair price! At Stanley's Pizza next to Jester King, the bottles were going for about $6. That's too bad to hear as well because The Friendly Spot is usually my go to bar in San Antonio for good beer selection even though they usually have really terrible bartenders.

I did have my own awful experience there as well when I saw a tap I had never seen before and ordered a pint. When I got my bill, I found that the pint was $15 and I was pissed that the bartender didn't even notify me when I had said "Oh, never seen that before! I'll have to try it!"

The lamest part was that it was just this beer:
    http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/675/7633/?show_hads=Y

    which isn't even that good.

Ouch. I've never seen this beer before. I wonder if it's something that is typically served by half pints. Either way more transparency on pricing will help a lot.

Again...it is about showing prices or giving people a heads up.

They can claim all these excuses but it comes down to that. I am guessing they have no desire to show prices because people will actually realize they are getting ripped off before they order.

$15 pint and no warning? Yeah...not friendly.

I stopped by Friendly Spot with friends last night to watch the Spurs game. They have Odio Equum bottles - also $16 a bottle. Still several KBS waiting for your dollars.

Me and my friends had a total of 5 pints and a bottle of Old Rasputin. The pints were all TX pints. The total bill was $38 pre-tip. Just FYI for those asking for price reference above.

Price gouging doesn't stop in SA. Houston/Spring's Brixx in the Vintage sells Endeavor for $22 :grimacing:

I'm not sure what the retail price is for Odio Equum, but if it's priced anywhere near Uncle Jacob's (~$11 retail, IIRC), then $16 is actually a pretty fair bar price.

But do you have SA BB3 at $16 and clearly posted? I don't mind paying for great beer but SA FS has BB3 for $10. Leads me to believe TFS has a huge overhead (that they passed on to customers based on the recent tap expansion or to supplement the expansion of their local craft business). Regardless, I don't care but I spend ALOT of good money at Freetail & Saucer bc I know what I'm paying for what I'm buying. So I will remain friendly, drink where I'm happy & continue to share with all the great BA's I know across Texas. Many know me as Grendle and others know me as Levi but I will always be a Beer Advocate. Cheers!

Can we turn our outrage to growler fill prices at places in Austin?

I got a growler of 512 Double IPA filled at the growler room for $16.50.

Whip in had it at $42+ (cant remember the exact number).

WhyTF is it that much more at the whip in?

That is what the Growler Room people were saying....I could not independently verify this, but I believe it. Considering that they sell it in half pints and their normal growlers start at $18, 42 seems about right for them.

Do you happen to know the price per pint? I stopped getting growlers at Whip In because they were usually more expensive than Draught House.
