2x 2.5 gallon mash/boil to create 5 gallon batch?

    It isn't exactly bad to take a SG reading in the fermentor, but you're increasing the risk of contamination etc - I wouldn't do it.

    Besides, you aren't really "losing" beer, you are gaining samples to try :stuck_out_tongue:

    There's 10000 ways to brew and most of them work pretty well. Everything you have done seems just fine to me, typical and justifiable. You're good. No worries.
