They wash their robes in a washing machine from Miele, on the menu in their restaurant are vegetarian spring rolls, and they almost made chocolate instead of Trappist beer. In a new book the monks of Westvleteren offer a unique glimpse into their lives. With their Trappist beer they are known throughout the world, but what lies behind the walls of the St. Sixtus Abbey in Westvleteren playing was for centuries a secret. In the book 'The abbey of Westvleteren' the 21 brothers show us for once how their life looks like.
"There is a new wing to the Abbey, a magnificent modern building designed by architect Bob Van Reeth," says Katrien De Vreese from the Davidsfunds of publishing. "Throughout the construction process in the last three years the brothers gave their lives into view." There are pictures in the book of the new dining room where the brothers eat every day in absolute silence, there is no talking at dinner table. "Meat is never on the table, once a year they have a barbeque. When someone is ill, for example, he gets an egg to recuperate, "says De Vreese. A funeral of a brother in the abbey could be recorded in photographs. The fathers also show the rooms where they sleep. In the old building they did so in a common dormitory, now everyone has their own place. Part of the profits that the book brings in, goes to the building fund of the abbey and should therefore help finance the new building. Previously the abbey sold its beer to the retailer Colruyt in order to replenish the building society.

The spring rolls look appetizing, especially because I don't eat pork
