I'm looking to do a brew tour this weekend and I was wondering which of these two choices people liked best. Unfortunately I don't have time or money to do or I would. Any thoughts on which is more enjoyable?

Hops & Grains is the better brewery by a mile. I have not been to the tour, but here they will often have some of their Greenhouse beers on. Which are excellent one offs.

    H&G.

I like Adelberts, but H&G does great things.

I prefer H&G by 1000X. The tour is fine but the beers available in the tap room are extensive and awesome.

Haven't been to H&G, but the Adelbert's tour was the worst one I've been on (early April 2013). It was short, not explained well, couldn't hear the guide, and he didn't seem receptive to questions. Maybe it was just that guide.
Their beer is OK but not great, and most of what was offered was their regular stuff (not all of it). I think 1 or 2 of the 6 things they offered were brewery only barrel experiments, and their barrel-aged dubbel was so dang wine-y. You get a wristband for 6 tastes, and I think 3 of the 6 beers 'cost' 2 ticks (the highest ABV and barrel ones).

I had a good time overall, it was a good atmosphere aside from the tour, and do plan to go back to Adelbert's. But if you want a tour it seems like everyone is saying H&G...

I've had a great time at both. I did the Adelbert's tour earlier this year. I ended up just kind of wandering off on my own and ran into Scott (owner) who was brewing at the time. I ended up talking to him for a couple hours and walked through a good bit of his brewing process. He even opened a bottle of Flyin' Monks that he had been aging for a while (early batch 1). Tasty stuff. I even got to the point of discussing of brewing my own beer (large batch) at his brewery. Scott is a great guy.

H&G does have a great selection of beer. My only problem is it gets a little too crowded in their tasting room on Fridays. I haven't actually been on a formal tour there.

I think you'll have a good time at either location. (512) is also offering tours this weekend.

I had a similar experience with Adelbert's when they were giving out samples at Central Market. It seemed like I was bothering them when I asked questions. I just went over to the Rahr booth and started talking with their ATX Sales Rep, Carl. Very cool guy, and I promptly bought a 6er of Gravel Road.

For those of you who have had a bad experience at the Adelbert's tasting room, on behalf of everyone at the brewery, I apologize. We truly want everyone who supports us by coming to the brewery to have a great time. However, we don't receive too much feedback face to face, so it is usually only through threads like this where we can hear about what we're doing wrong. If you've raised any concerns about our tasting room (or tastings with our beer elsewhere) in this thread, I'd really like to hear more about it so we can address the problem. If you could shoot me a BM with some specifics, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks a lot everyone. I'm the only beer drinker in my family but when I mentioned it to everyone it seems like a popular idea to do one friday and the other saturday so it looks like I won't have to choose.

Are there any must haves from each one?

At Adelberts, you will likely be able to taste all of them. So that should be good.

H&G, I have no idea what they have all the time. I would just head straight for the greenhouse series though.

They always have the core 3 (Alteration, Pale Dog, Zoe) and 4 or more Greenhouse beers on tap (which are rotating as they run out of them). They always seem to have 1 barrel-aged beer as well.

keep in mind H&G is no longer a free tasting room bc of all the freeloaders who'd show up and not even throw in a tip for the tap pullers. Never been to adelberts, though their beer is good to pretty good, so I can't compare. H&G is pouring a special sour during their tour right now -- a lacto/brett barleywine. And its damn good.

If you have to choose at Adelbert's, Philosophizer is my favorite beer from them, followed by Tripel B. The internet agrees (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/27934). When I went, I couldn't try them all because I think you needed 8 ticks to try them all and you only get 6 ticks. Might've changed/change as the taps change.
If you like sour/wilds, their Rambler (I had it on tap at an ATX pub, not the brewery) was way off style and reminded me of a wild ale. The Friday tasting I went to filled up, so stake out a table early if you want one.

From H&G's website, they do tours Saturdays at 1 and 3pm, so do Adelbert's Friday @5pm (or whatever time they start on Friday, if it change).

In the event that you do end up having to choose one, I'll put in a vote for H&G. They may be making the best beer in Austin right now.

I prefer H&G beer, but then I think they are my favorite Austin brewery. I do like Adelbert's a lot, also.

I think I prefer Adelbert's tasting room experience, although it seems to be quite crowded nowadays compared to last year. If I could do one, it would be H&G - but Adelbert's is worth the visit too.

This isn't really a decision I would ever make. No offense, but I don't really enjoy Adeltbert's stuff. Hops and Grain Zoe and Alteration are two very good ones. Adelberts kinda seems meh and I know that's harsh, but just being honest.

I don't think they actually have tours on Fridays. The tasting room is open, though (unless something has changed in the last month).

I'm not going to lie.... I go on the tours to taste the beers... I enjoy the tour if I walk around.. but often I don't even go on that part... I just drink and enjoy time with friends.

I really like the Adelberts I've had... I've never seen Hops and Grain on tap anywhere in Houston.. guessing they don't hit here... BUT if I get to go to one tasting/tour in Austin.. it would be Live Oak.

Live Oak is hands down my favorite unfortunately they aren't as regular at scheduling tours. Adelberts does have good brews and so did Hops and Grains today.

I was also interested to hear with the bills at gov perry's desk Hops and Grains is looking to begin a brew pub this year sometime. I guess Jester King is also looking to go this route. It'll be so nice to finally be able to buy beer at the brewery.

No kegs of H&G that I have seen, but cans of Zoe, Alteration, and Pale Ale at various Specs, Kroger, and HEB around Houston. All are good, and Zoe is excellent.
