A real interesting story - although Canada was first settled in the 1600's I believe. My genealogy research shows my G-G-G-G-G-G Grandfather Mathurin Normandin was fur trader in Quebec (New France) in the 1600's.

But I love reading stories about old beer findings like that. Looking at the photo - it seemed to still have some liquid fluidity. A beer that old could have bee like chunks of glue.

    Cool story.

Base on a quick search - it looks like it would be the 2nd oldest in North America behind only Molson? Yuengling is USA's oldest at 1829.

yes but as we know just because its settled doesnt mean its a country. Canada had a constitution act established in 1867.

The sad thing is that Alexander Keith's is just like any other macro now.

Very cool story. I was born in Halifax and lived there until I was twenty eight, so a good part of my misspent youth and pre-craft university life was spent drinking Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale. The slogan in the really old TV ads was: "Those who like it, like it a lot." While it does pain me to say it about a brewery from my city, it really is not a very good beer, although I certainly once thought it was. It's me that changed, not the beer. It does brings back memories though. Cheers for sharing.

Well, except Alexander Keith's has not been an independent brewing company since 1928, when it was sold to Oland & Sons, which itself was later bought by Labatt in 1971 - the year after Oland closed the original A. Keith's Halifax brewery. So, today Alexander Keith's is simply a "national brand of Labatt's", owned by ABInBev (then Interbrew) since the mid-1990s.

    Looks like ABI/Labatt
is planning to open a tiny 2k hl "microbrewery" inside what is now merely a tourist attraction at the original site where "....actors portray citizens of 1863 Halifax".
It, like it's Labatt's stablemate, Labatt IPA, was a pretty sad excuse for an India pale ale long before the existence of ABInBev - at least, that was the case by the 1970s when I first had both Canadian IPAs hoping I'd found beers comparable to (or better than?) Falstaff's Ballantine India Pale Ale.

In all honesty labatt's no better, Just another macro who wants to dumb down flavors to sell to a mass market. These breweries would rather name a cheap beer an IPA and sell a million bottles than make a good one that hits a niche and may sell half that.
