I'm buying bottles or cans cheaper at shops than at breweries a lot of times and it really irks me. I mean besides the fact that I think they should incentivize and service local communities to buy from the source, there's the shipping cost and the profit margins of shops that have to be covered. So why am I paying $13.50 for a 4 pack of IPA that is sold cheaper at even Whole Paycheck?

i mean it's fine... i'll deal with it.. but what the shit

Maybe to not undercut their distribution & retail networks, which they depend on for the bulk of their sales?

I also wonder this...and I don't feel like it is a "if you don't like it, don't buy it" type of bellyache. Why would breweries do this? I think they should underprice but understand why they don't out of a desire to not damage relationships down the value chain yet I'm speechless on being higher than other sellers.

The only reason to pay more at a brewery is for freshness. But Capitalism dictates that the price charged is whatever the market will bear so by buying at the brewery for more than it costs in a store, fresher beer or not, you encourage the brewery to continue their pricing practices.

And maybe it's for the reason two posts above [which sure as hell makes more sense].

You're probably not paying more at the brewery, you're probably paying less at some stores. Not trying to split hairs. I mean the brewery will typically recommend a price and sell at that point. It is then up to retailers to elect to sell at higher or lower prices depending on their business model.

I agree with you that it sucks to pay more at the brewery, but I view this as more along the lines of the retailer undercutting the brewery rather than the brewery "over-cutting" the retailers.

If the brewery sells it for less, then retailers have no reason to stock the product.

Can they self distro there? call me cheap but if the price to drink at the micro pub is more than it costs at the store and its local, ie, 30 miles or less. then I would NOT DRINK THERE unless its world class and I had the money to burn. Unless you go there for social reasons???

Most of those pubs (IMHO) at the micro are not that much of a thrill, unless you just got to look at brewing tanks, seen 1 seen them all, just bigger and smaller.

yea I always feel raped when I know I pay for more for anything....

I get your point here generally, but convenience is a big reason to stock it and sell it. There is only one brewery, but a zillion places selling it that are probably closer to where the OP lives. Unless you're living that close to the brewery

I've got one brewery that I go to with an independent bottle shop a block away. The bottle shop sells the same growler for $3 less than what I can get from the brewery.

Drinking there, no problem. They can charge what they want. But bottles or cans to go being more expensive than any store around feels weird. But the supply /retail chain answer makes a lot of sense to me and I'm fine with it. This hasn't ever deterred me from going to the breweries

good for you, was confused I thought you were just talking about to go beer.

may of my locals sell 6 packs for near or a buck more than the stores do. so I go there to drink new and fresh and whatever but I never buy to go beer, why should I?, I can hit the store.
Since I know its NOT a good deal, why post about it. but I get it, its frustrating.:grinning::grimacing:

All I know is that I can go to Appalachian Mountain Brewing and get a growler of Daniel's Double for $16.99 or just go 2 blocks away to Peabody's and get the same for $13.99

Yes i'm just talking about to go beer. I buy it there to ensure freshness and since i'm already there having a drink.

I posted about it to figure out why it's the case and it was quickly explained to me... and I should have figured it out myself if i thought about it enough.
