Wow. I will do my best not to miss this next year.
I really liked Bike Rack's Czech Pilsner. Love their new brewery and taproom.
FINALLY checked out Crisis Brewing in Fayetteville. It's adjacent to Penquin Ed's on College ( or is it School?) The beers were decent. I like them better than a few older more established in-town options. That back deck area will be a nice hangout as long as the leaves are still on the trees, might get a bit noisy come fall. I'll be back. Hope to review some of their brews soonish. Waiting for my submission to be added
Just did a review of Crisis Brewing's Existential DIPA, a very nice old school DIPA
Driving from Austin, TX to Brinkley (halfway between Little Rock and Memphis) for a friend's wedding first weekend of November, any must-stops along the way?
It depends on what you are looking for. If you want to stop and have a beer there are several decent breweries in Little Rock and North Little Rock. Rebel Kettle, and Lost 40 are just off 6th st and I 30 and are close to each other. The Flying Saucer is on Clinton Drive not far of of I 30. They are a bar not a brewery and they have a large tap list. Around 200 bottles, cans or taps. All of those places have food that is pretty decent. Springhill Liquor is maybe 1/2 mile off I 40 as you are leaving Little Rock. If you have the extra time I could recommend other places but the ones I mentioned are close to the route you will be on.
Looking at Seek a Brew I'm not seeing much in Arkansas that you can't get in Texas. Bells may be the most noteworthy.
Lost Forty is an Arkansas-only product. If you like what they offer be sure to stock up.
On the route, Lost Forty and Rebel Kettle are right there off Interstate 30. Easy in and out. If you have time and want to go off the path a ways there are several places to consider. How much time do you have to wander off?
If you have time to veer off I-30 into Hot Springs, Superior Bathhouse Brewery and SQZBX Brewery Pizza Joint are worthy.
Both places make solid beer and excellent food and a ton of history and character. Two truly unique beer venues. Not your ordinary upstart craft breweries by a long shot. There is also a beer store and taproom called Craft Beer Cellar nearby that can handle your need for growler fills and packages to go.
There are other craft breweries and taprooms to visit in Hot Springs and the greater Diamond Lakes area (Amity, Bonnerdale...basically along I-30 between Arkadelphia and Malvern) but since I have not visited them I cannot comment. If anyone has a take on Slate Rock or any of the Bubba Brews locations please check in.
Correct me if I'm wrong (not holding breath), but beyond LR/NLR on I-40 toward Brinkley is a dead zone. I would be shocked if a craft brewery has opened in those parts and is any good.
Anything between LR and Memphis will be a complete wasteland for beer. TX has far better distribution than we do, so the local AR only breweries will be the only unique stuff you probably find. I will say that special release stuff tends to sit on the shelf a bit longer here, so you may turn up some gems.
I’d say try some Mother’s Brewing (especially MILF) and get Schlafly Pumpkin if you’re a pumpkin beer fan.
Definitely stop at Lost Forty and Rebel Kettle. I’d add Flyway to the list as well. Most of their lineup is pretty basic, but they have an insane NEIPA called Low Flock that rotates on every couple months. Their food is kickass, too.
Local News Reported HogHaus Brewery is closing here. I guess the building was sold for $ 3.5M. I haven't been there in years. Siloam Springs has a brewery; Ivory Bill Brewing. I must check them out soon.
I’ve heard good things about Ivory Bill. If I’m not mistaken, they are focusing on traditional English session-style beers.
Might check them out today!
Here's the story. I wonder what is going to happen to that building. Do you think that another brewing concern might be interested? Seems that Yellow Rocket (the Lost Forty/Big Orange people) knows how to make things work.
Hopefully something worthy of that Building's price tag ( who know's they may have got it for less? )
