just a thought i have been pondering the past couple weeks. i have noticed some people (not all) in the trade forum have access to phenomenal brews: black note, hopslam, cherry rye, you get the picture. When people post in the trade forums they have a case of something and give a very vague ISO, i typically will respond with some viable options (not shelf beers, but brewery only releases that are pretty highly sought after). After a few responses lately, I have just gotten the jist these people have cases of phenomenal beer and only want to trade for whales. I thought the idea on here was to spread great beer around, not make trading an auction and of "who won the trade". one instance, i was short 4.00 on a trade and he said "plus my beer is more expensive than yours." In my experiences, if my TP was short a couple bucks, i would let it slide b/c i have ALWAYS received extras and just did not worry about it. And my TP's have always been generous and have reached out when i was looking for a beer (thanks sendsilk). i just feel like trading is becoming more of a "i have A...you better have B, C, and D and they better be whales or i am not even interested." its not evenabout $4$ anymore. just wanted to express that on here. anyone feel the same way i do?

I know for a fact one of the biggest whale hunters on here is also an advocate. Donating a BADL to the Sandy Hook LIF is advocacy in my mind.

The most rewarding part of being a BA will be making great trading partners where you will just send each other great beer for the sake of sending great beer. Try to win a trade, you will get the beer and not much else. And when your great trading partner gets a whale, he won't hesitate in sending it your way. Those people are the best beer advocates and people advocates for that matter.

I saw the title of your post and was about to rip you a new asshole, but saying that when I read what you are actually talking about, I really agree with you.

As MordorMongo says, the true problem is those that are trying to win trades not those with wales in most cases.

The users that have that case ( or 60+ bottles of that new rare beer *cough BA abraxas cough* ) and act like they don't but leverage the bottle or two they say they have over and over are the problem you refer to in spades.

The real problem is everyone is afraid to call them out. ( and other bad traders )

I received 2 emails stating that a little birdy told them who horded the BA Abraxas. Both listed the same person, but it would be good if someone called them out publicly with the first hand info and curtailed their plans to maximize they trades.

It would be even nicer if those who did have the balls to drop the hints did not have their posts deleted.

Those are the people you need to worry about.

Basically watch for the assholes in the trading forum and stay away from them even if they have the beers you want.

THEY ARE NOT THAT HARD TO SPOT.

I know a whale hunter on here who happens to be obscenely generous. One of the coolest people I have ever met online in any of my hobbies. ( cars, beer, etc ) The guy defines "advocate" in my book. I could ship him my entire "cellar" and still lose the trade.

If people have incredibly vague ISOs, report them; it's a sign that they are auctioning off their beer.

I have no problem with whale hunting. Heck, pretty much every one of us has hunted a personal whale at some point or another. The problem I have is with the people who abuse the trade forums.

Cheers to those who are decent traders on this site (I know there are plenty)!

To those who want to auction and/or hold a limited release hostage, I hope you drop the bottle while packaging it. :stuck_out_tongue:

ya... i posted a couple of times mentioning the guy who had 60+ bottles of ba abraxas (matthew r. - don't know his ba username). here's what happened:

    1) people told me it was multiple guys who got together and took pics of their allotment, even though the guy clearly stated on fb that they were all his bottles
    2) a number of people insinuated i was a woman (why this would shut me up, i don't know)
    3) the thread got deleted

when you're outnumbered by assholes and the censorship runs freely, it's probably time to give up.

I don't think you can necessarily spot them. They can crawl out of the woodwork and respond to an honest ISO. Case in point, I posted a while back that I was looking for beer X, a brewery-only beer with a two-bottle limit. I knew it was a long shot, but I had strong connections with the brewery and wanted to land a bottle if I could. I got one response, and it was from someone who got two bottles and up front said (I'm paraphrasing): "This other person already offered me two rare beers that equal four times the value of this bottle, so unless you can do better I'll probably go with him." Thinking to myself, why did you even respond to my ISO? I didn't see any other ISO:FT posts for this beer either. Needless to say, I declined.

Every whale hunter I've met has been very generous and advocate-like. Except for that one asshole of course.

I know, that Rempo gives IN BA's a bad name. Good thing guys like Mongo are here to redeem them! Besides, I wear my FFF's hoodie to FFF because I am that kind of BA.

I am an advocate, and I don't hunt for whales. If I get them, then great! I like to trade my limited release brews for local offerings from all over.

There are good traders and bad traders at all levels. I don't really get caught up in the whale race, but if I want something limited and the person I'm talking to asks for too much, I just walk away. I'm happy to trade fairly on bottle count, quality, cost, etc - but I'm not going to overpay for something just because it's the hot shit of the month on ISO/FT.
