I would go ahead and email some of the breweries now to see what they say.

Breweries can legally sell kegs to individuals, but you'll need to have a keg transportation permit in NC to take the keg with you. Some of the breweries that don't sell kegs to individuals regularly might not want to deal with the paperwork. There may some regulations about transporting kegs over state lines or keg transportation in your home state you'll need to consider.

If there aren't any breweries interested, however, you should be able to buy a local keg from a bottleshop. It'll cost more than straight from the brewery, but they may be more willing to play ball.

Was in Asheville the weekend before last for a wedding. Had a wonderful time, I think it's a fantastic town. I was a little let down by the beer but that's probably a personal opinion I'd say. I thought Burial was far and away the best brewery I went to. Stood in line and grabbed a bottle of Realm of Absolute Nothingness and Anno Domini MMXIX. Than Anno was the best beer I had all weekend and one of the best stouts I've had in a very long time. Ended up at Burial 3 different times on Friday.
Liked Green Man a close second.
Ate at Tupelo, Hemingways, and Pack's Tavern. Delicious food at all 3.
Sierra Nevada brewery and tour was worth every penny. Amazing place, food, and beer.

We are is Asheville for a couple days for a family vacation. Visited The Green Man Mansion and Burial this evening. The roof spot at the Green Mansion was really nice and the beers were good. Burial was a nice spot, but the beers we tried were really good. I hope to hit a couple more breweries up before we leave on Friday. So far we are really enjoying Asheville.

If you like rooftop bars, check out Highland. Their rooftop bar offers great views of the mountains and their taproom usually has a bunch of small batch exclusives that don't ever make it "down the mountain."

Had a trip to the Midwest fall through at the last second and ended up in Asheville this past weekend on very short notice. This thread was immensely helpful so thanks to all that have contributed. My trip notes:
    • Sierra Nevada - certainly the nicest looking brewhouse I've visited. Enjoyed the tour (90 version) but I can't say that I enjoy their new products as much as their old standbys.
    • Appalachian Vinter - Awesome selection. Super helpful service. Special thanks to the dude that recommended Lindley Park by Old Hickory Brewery. Totally blown away by this beer from a brewery that I'm ashamed to admit I had not heard of before my visit. Packed one of their barleywines into my suitcase. Will be breaking that out on a special occasion.
    • Enjoyed visiting Burial and Green Man, wish I had a chance to visit more tap rooms in town.
    • Went to Fonta Flora's farm location. What an amazing spot with amazing beer. Much respect to what this brewery is putting out as well as their focus on local ingredients. Truely unique beers.
    • Great food all trip. Best two meals were at Rhubarb and Chai Pani.
    • I don't think I've been to a friendlier town. Actually took some getting used to...
    • Finally, what a beautiful corner of the country. Glad we brought our hiking gear with us and explored some trails off the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Anyone been to a concert at New Belgium? My family and I are going for a show next month and wanted to know what their beer line up might look like (wife likes the sours) also how early we should get there.

Glad to hear you enjoyed our part of the country! And definitely glad to have another OHB convert out there, they can really put out some high quality barrel-aged stuff! Which OHB barleywine did you get? Irish Walker is their normal barleywine and is great on its own, but they also do a brandy barrel aged version called Appalachian Walker. App Walker is a collab between OHB and App Vintner, which is the only reason I'd think they might still have some around.

I picked up a waxed bottle of the 2013 Irish Walker. The App Walker sounds quite appealing as well. I wish I had more room in my suitcase!

Hey, that's awesome! Hell, I only have 1 bottle of 2013 left, might need to stop by and pick some up!

Any new (last year or two) places to check out? Including craft bars/restaurants.

What are the best spots for watching football while having excellent beer?

After years, yes years, Burial Beer Co. is finally announced the opening date for the Forestry Camp location, in the Biltmore Village area of Asheville.
Purchased in 2015, first rumored to open in the summer of 2016, but now scheduled to open on September 27.

Pretty solid start. Will be interested to see if they can consistently keep beers like this on tap. Could actually go for a couple more Burial beers, but that'll probably be what happens over time?

I was also wondering whether they would sell cans as their other location currently does.

I know it's probably been overshadowed by the long-awaited opening of Forestry Camp, but apparently there's a new one called Riverside Rhapsody. Haven't been but I've heard good things.

Their website is saying "soon-to-be-open", but does list hours, Fri - Sun only. They do have an permit for on premises malt beverage so guessing the brewing is being done at Blue Mountain Pizza in Weaverville.

So I’m in town visiting my folks and went to Bruisin Ales yesterday and there was like nothing in the place. Usually when I go there it’s wall to wall beer. Are they closing or something?

Haven’t been to Asheville in over a year...going for Thanksgiving and will be there through Sunday. Any newer recs? Last time I went to Eurisko and Zillicoah and really liked both. Planning on hitting the new Burial location.

IMO there is Burial and then there are the others.
    Green Man
Sierra Nevada and Tour. Might be to late to get a tour though.
Wicked Weed is popular, but I don't find what they are making to be very good.
I liked a couple of beers at Catawba.
Other than that just look through this thread, prob find some recs.

I always tell people to visit White Labs, and do the tour if you are into brewing. (They are closed for Black Friday). Great facility, good food and interesting tap selections often with multiple versions of the same recipe yet different yeast strains. Wicked Weed Funkatorium is another favorite, if you like sour/funk.

Bruisin' is not closing, but I did notice the other day they didn't have the normal stacks of cases around the front. Owner mentioned something about delaying weekly stock shipment until after Thanksgiving weekend; maybe making room for Black Friday tappings?

DSSLVR will be opening in a couple weeks (Friday Dec 13th).
