I would go ahead and email some of the breweries now to see what they say. Breweries can legally sell kegs to individuals, but you'll need to have a keg transportation permit in NC to take the keg with you. Some of the breweries that don't sell kegs to individuals regularly might not want to deal with the paperwork. There may some regulations about transporting kegs over state lines or keg transportation in your home state you'll need to consider. If there aren't any breweries interested, however, you should be able to buy a local keg from a bottleshop. It'll cost more than straight from the brewery, but they may be more willing to play ball.
