    From MNBeer:

Mister Berg from the August Schell Brewing Company reports that the 7th beer in the Stag Series, stretched the limits of their brewhouse. Each batch of Stag #7 required two separate mashes of over 6000 pounds of malt. 150 pounds of hops were added to the wort during the extended boil. The wort was then cooled and fermented with an American Ale yeast. Finally, the beer was aged for over 3 months. The end result” “An intensely malty and assertively hopped American Barleywine.”
    Release dates forthcoming.

    Schell Stag Series #7 Barleywine
    OG 25 Plato
    IBU 80
    SRM 16
Malt: 2-Row, Golden Promise, Vienna, Caramunich 80, Caramel 120
    Hops: Nugget, Cascade

Color me jazzed! August Schell's has always excelled at making good, tasty low ABV-brews (something of a lost art, no?), but I have to say I'm really looking forward to this one.

No shite. What a break from tradition. Sort of - if it comes anywhere the Burton ale we are in for a treat. And I will put some aside for cellaring. Probably the biggest beer (in both malt and hops) I can remember from this jewel.
    I'm psyched.

I'm excited to try this. I hate to say it, but I don't think I've had anything from Schells. Is snowstorm worth getting? Chimney sweep? I've just passed on them, b/c I buy way to much beer as it is.

But I could totally see myself getting this to try, and to possibly cellar as well.

Try some Emerald Rye or some Hefe in the summer and you'll be a lifetime fan.
If you like Belgian-style brews you'll probably like the '12 Snowstorm.

I thought the Chimney Sweep was a very tasty, well made beer. Snowstorm this year is very yeasty, Belgian like....it is a quality beer...

I think the title of this thread would be more accurate if it were prefaced with "Suck on this Charlie Papazian," but that's just me. It's good to know non-craft breweries are producing barleywines.

That is something isn't it....haven't seen the Hamms Barley Wine hit the shelves yet but they are comparable beers based on their reasoning right?

Emerald Rye is out of this world. Also, their Oktoberfest is one of the best of the style, imho.

Schell's Bock is the best bock bottled in the US and it is out now. Also Schmaltz's Alt is out. Much better than Alaskan Amber which people love for some reason. As others have said, go out and get some Emerald Rye and Chimney Sweep.

Right now Chimney Sweep is my favorite Schell's beer, love the stuff. I'm excited for the barleywine, as everything they have put out lately has been awesome.
