-> Poll #23 <- determined that the bittering hop(s), if any, will be one or more of the previously selected Flavor/Aroma Hops.

This poll will determine the timing of the hop additions, not quantities or specific variety(s) for each addition. Some may feel they can't vote on timing without knowing which hops and proportions for each addition. Oh well, we have to start somewhere. Multiple choices are of course allowed for this one. Any timing choice with at least 50% of voters choosing it will be in. Any timing choice with less than 50% of voters choosing it will be out. Hopefully the options cover enough bases (and then some).

This poll will be open for 48 hours.

If you have issues with or suggestions for methodologies used in this project, please send them via beermail. Let's keep the threads themselves on topic to the question at hand and not about how you would have asked the question differently. Lobbying for votes and intelligent discussion of each choice's relative merits is encouraged.

I just went with my standard UK pale ale regime of first wort, 20, flameout. I'm usually using only EKG for the later additions, so someone with more experience with Target or Northdown could maybe sway me to change.

Majority should be at 60 for bittering. Smaller late hop adds at 10 and flameout for flavor/aroma. No dry hop.

I'll change my vote to avoid doing additions at 20 and 10. We should pick one, not both.

FWH because I am lazy, I'd be happy with 60 minutes, but I would still FWH because I am lazy.
10 minutes because I want some flavor, but not sure if I want to get carried away. And then a splash of dry hops for aroma.

Flameout hops seem weird for an ESB, don't know why

No one will vote with me if I wrote in 90, right?

That's just the same as FWH.

You mean the calculated IBUs are about the same? Could be. But I'm not sure the magic that is fwh occurs in a mere 90 min boil

You mean the magic of "smooth" bitterness
or are you suggesting there are other magic tricks with FWH?

I've started using FWH but I really don't think there's any difference to adding it at the beginning of the boil. The reason I do it is because it's easier. I don't have to think about when I add the hops and I can just focus on making sure it doesn't boil over.

My interest is really in calculating the exact IBUs in the beer, regardless of fwh magic. I want no fewer than 4 significant digits.

    (That's a straightline, inviting a punchline: "I'll give you a significant digit...")

Ha.... even on a good day, IBU calcs are only good to about 1/2 a significant digit. But we totally digress.

I first wort hop as it helps prevent boil overs, it's also something to do when waiting for the mash to finish.

    Looks like 60, 10, and Flameout/Whirlpool/Hopstand.
