Having my bachelor party in Montreal in mid August. I am thinking of spending either a Friday or Saturday afternoon grabbing some brews at local establishments. I am into NE style IPA and sours.

Anyone doing NE style in Montreal? Also debating if we should go to a brewery or two as I know some of the popular breweries are close to each other; or better bet to find a beer bar that will have a bunch of the local flavor? Will probably only have 2-3 hours max devoted to this part of the weekend

    Any recommendations welcome.

To update- not sure exact location of Airbnb but it's walking distance from Schwartz's and Buonanotte.

Also wondering if there is a nearby bottle shop that I can scoop some beers for the house for the weekend

Not necessarily NEIPA or sours, but you should be 15 min or so walk from Dieu du Ciel as well as Benelux, can't really go wrong with either of those.
Vices Versa is a great beer bar and Depanneur Peluso for bottles but those are a little further out maybe.
    Enjoy!!

There are two Quebecois NEIPAs that I'm aware of: Les Trois Mousquetaire's IPA and the Vox Populi IPA. Unfortunately, they're both a little hard to find and there's no guarantee they'll be on shelves when you're passing through town (although LTM's isn't that hard to find on tap, I think).

Probably leaning towards DDC now but both look great. DDC seems to have more of a variety after a quick glance at their sites. They are also 8 minute drives away so may try to swing both. Especially like how DDC offers 4oz pours. And actually DDC is showing Y’a pas de troüb which it calls a NE style IPA!!!

Vices and Versa is only 5-10 min away via car so that's an option too. Can always check tap list as it gets closer.

Can't decide. Part of me thinks it would be nicer to pick a brewery and get a flight and give them a whirl, but then I'd also be putting all my eggs in one basket as opposed to going to a beer bar lol

Boréale NEIPA, best of the bunch. I believe can be found on tap

Holy cow! I finally coincided with it being on tap somewhere and you weren't kidding. It is the real deal! Easily at the top of the heap as far as new-fangled IPAs in QC go.

Whenever I hear "Boreale" All I can think of is the days of my dissipated youth drinking $6 pitchers of Boreale Rousse and Noire at Loonies at the corner of St. Laurent and Rachel. I have heard nothing but great things about this IPA but a part of me still can't believe it can be anything other than the swill I used to guzzle.

Can't wait to try it one day.

They had a brewery only can release, but I believe they'll have a wider release sometime soon.

When you see ISO Boreal, FT Heady on message boards, it definitely makes you do a double take

You want NEIPA's? You will be right by the Vermont border.......cross over it.

I drink plenty of NE style IPA in Florida. I was just throwing it out there to see if there is a brewery nearby doing it justice.

At this point, really just looking for a solid brewery or bar to hang out on Friday of the party. Thinking DDC fits the bill

For sure. It is kinda small and can get busy so have a plan B in place. Many other good options were already mentioned.

I'll be in Orlando next week. Where are these NE style IPA's you speak of?!?

Mainly south Florida lol Civil society has the best hops in Florida imho. Wakefield has decent IPAs too but prefer Civil. Might be able to find some Civil on tap in Orlando.

Thanks for your input! I figure we will go to DDC around open (1pm) so don't think space/crowds will be issue

So, since this isn't too late with the party being in August, and you've suggested DDC, let me add my two cents. As BakaGaijin has already noted DDC is small, but I've never had a problem early on - how many in your group? - and I've always had a good time there, but you don't want to be the 300 pound gorilla in the room, do you? If that's your thought I'd say go early and then walk over to Vices & Versa and hang out on the back deck where there's a little more open space. Helm is nearby/on the way if I'm not correct and could make another stop, but Vices & Versa is nice and the walk might help.

That's a solid plan. That area is quickly becoming beer-central. Isle de Garde is also close by, as well as good bottleshops and lots of good Italian food.

Also, as much as I like DDC, it's true that it gets way over-crowded. I have had more negative experiences there due to that and terrible service than I have good ones due to their beers.

12 people in party, including myself. I do plan on going near open on a Friday at 1pm so can't imagine it being a huge crowd. I'll keep Vice Versa in back pocket and look into Isle de garde

Edit- Isle de Garde has a milkshake IPA currently on draft!! How is their beer? Honestly was leaning towards DDC just because I've heard of it haha

Was thinking Vice Versa may be good bet to get a mix of different breweries but still like idea of checking out a local brewery itself

Vices versa gets beers from all over Quebec most of it's good, but there are probably a few stinkers here and there.

As long as you get to DDC when they open you'll be fine. Honestly with that many people you'll have a rough time at most places without a reservation. Good luck and don't get too married (had har) to the idea of finding good IPAs and NEIPAs while you're here cause the really good ones are still few and far between:slight_smile:

Dinners are all taken care of, will pop in to Schwartz's. Honestly, my brother is planning most of it. Other than the brewery, which is my call lol

Isle de Garde's beer is very good, I think they're one of the best breweries in the province. It's typically only available on tap, at their own bar or a few others. Last week they had some of their bottled saisons available for puchase at MaBrasserie, don't know if there's anything left at this point.

Does Isle de Garde have a decent outside spot? The comment above about vice Versa having an outside deck is tempting bc that seems ideal for 12 people. Beer wise though, I'm leaning towards Isle

Almost everywhere has a deck or somewhere to sit outside (including all of the places discussed so far). It's actually one of the nicest things about Montreal, people actually go to quite a bit of trouble so that people can drink outside.

The plan as of now is Fairmount for breakfast, head to DDC for beers at 1, then cab to Vice Versa for snacks and more beer.

    Thanks for everyone's input
