NC received a shipment of Sculpin last week. It is my understanding that the are now dating their bottles with a best by code. I purchased a case and am not able to locate a date code. Is anyone else able to find a date code?

Was an old batch of Sculpin dumped on NC?

I don't think it's old. It's been on tap at Carrboro Beverage for a couple of days and it tasted hoppier than the last keg of Sculpin they had. I would not buy a case without seeing a date stamp, though.

Very good beer but not one I'd buy (especially a full case of) without knowing that its fresh. If the store just got it I'd imagine it's fresh..hows it taste?

When I purchased the case, I did not know that Ballast Point had started dating their bottles. Additionally all of the beer stores were talking about the new shipment of Sculpin.

These are bombers, I wonder if it is the 12oz bottles that are being dated?

I have not tried it yet I was trying to hold off until Thursday.

Hey Follks, Earl from Ballast Point here...the beer that arrived in NC is fresh, we are having issues with our date code device that prints the best buy date in yellow on the neck of the bottle...sometimes it just decides to miss the bottle. We installed a new laser printer on our bottling line on Friday, the best buy date will now be on the actual label vs. the glass. I sent dmwcpa a pic as an example. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for being fans, Earl

Curious how the best by date relates to bottled date. I'll make up my mind how old is too old, but first I need to know how old it really is!

Does anyone know how long the best by date is from bottling, so we can know how fresh the beer is?

In the general beer discussion thread someone said that a sales rep told him it was 110 days.

Glad To hear that this batch is the freshness. Got two bombers chilling now...Tasty still has about 2 cases. Anybody know 1) why Raleigh gets Sculpin so rarely and 2) if there are any plans to get the 12oz bottles on shelves down here?

    JS-
I don't expect it's a Raleigh issue and more of a production issue at the brewery.

    Were your bottles date coded?

I'm not so sure. A buddy in Columbia, SC regularly had Sculpin access there before he moved away. Whenever I spend a weekend in Boone, there are frequently bottles at Peabody's, and other east coast markets see lots of Sculpin. Obviously I'm going on anecdotal evidence, but it seems that triangle-area distro might play some part in the rare Sculpin deliveries.

Forgot to check when I got them...yes, enjoy by 9/7/2012, in yellow on the bottom of the neck. Would sure like to see "bottled on" instead of "enjoy by," but any date is a great start.

Well hell, I purchased a case and none of the bottles have any date information.

I know it's in myrtle. Wonder why it's not elsewhere.

Didn't one of the distributors that handled some accounts for great breweries go under about a year ago or something? Was Ballast Point with them?

I don't recall. I just remember seeing sculpin on the shelf when I was at the pig in April.
