Hello everyone. I’m seeing rumblings but haven’t seen an official press release stating the Bass Pale Ale is done in the US for good. After calling around locally, most places say they haven’t had any in stock since February or March. Is this true? If so, is there any way at all to get some of this beer at this point? Sales have been terrible and that drives the decision but it still sucks.

I visited the Beer Menus website and searched for Bass Pale Ale and obtained a result of: "21 places have this beer near you".

By appearance that would seem to indicate this beer is not discontinued.

    Cheers!

Sales have probably been terrible because it's been brewed stateside for a couple years now.

I must just be in bad place for it. I’m in Iowa and the closest is apparently over 400 miles away!

I see you’re from Illinois. Have you seen it near you?

Without the ability to know when a beer was added to a store list on beermenus - I would guess that the places that would bother to list Bass on beermenus are also the places that would not bother to remove it from beermenus when they no longer have it. Alternatively, if it isn’t selling well, then it’s possible that those beers are still on the shelf in those stores and have been sitting there for two years.

    I purposefully worded my response:

"By appearance that would seem to indicate this beer is not discontinued."

    Cheers!

As some wiseass did in that long-running false rumor titled "Say Good-Bye to Michelob" thread, use AB's "Chat" feature to find out AB's official response.

    https://contactus.anheuser-busch.com/contactus/AB/contact_us.asp

(Apparently, their toll free number operators are no longer set up for consumer questions. Go figure. But the "Chat" worked better than hearing a phone ring, then some bad computer music while on hold, interrupted ocassionally by some voice telling you how important your call is to them until you get so frustrated and hang up.).

Yes, looking at a local situation can't tell you much about the rest of the country. On one hand ABInbev is in a powerful position to demand that its distributors carry the brands it wants in the market. But in some cases, AB might not actively promote a brand (Bass?). If sales in a region fall too low, AB might not want force a single pallet or a couple of kegs of a slow seller onto a distributor. It's not surprising that distribution of some products of a national brewer is spotty. In the early 70s AB had only a few products (not counting 3.2 variations: Bud, Mich, some dark draft, and Busch, which might have been regional); today try to count them.

This worked. They said it hasn’t been brewed since February. The rep hadn’t heard of any plans to discontinue. She said there aren’t any plans to brew in the next 30 days though either. She also said it may be an every 6 month kind of thing. The bottles they use are difficult to source so she said that may be impacting things. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yeah, but you must realize by now that your personality has you seeing hope in situations and my personality has me seeing false hope in situations. I don’t envy myself.:grin:

    Bass sucks nowadays!
When it came from across the Pond, and was available by the pitcher, it was a great thing. It made the perfect Black and Tan.
I once thought I got a bad case, then realized that they brewed it domestically. Not the same beer at all! Could be the same recipe, but either the water, which breweries can dial in, is off or something but it tastes nothing like it used to.
I'm more upset about losing Michelob at some point.
We stopped carrying Bass at the Pub I worked at because nobody bought it anymore after the change.
We use Harp for Black and Tan, or Half & Half, whatever you fancy calling it.

Too funny, I was thinking about this beer recently and how I haven't seen it in a long time.

Yes! I used to love using Bass for a B&T.

What a shame. Bass is one of those legendary ales, with a prominent place in Modernist culture: Manet's "Bar at the Folies Bergères" (1882) clearly shows a Bass red triangle on a bottle at the lower right side of the painting, and in Joyce's Ulysses Leopold Bloom is fixated on the Bass triangle. It was one of the first trademarked product symbols. One would think that ABInbev, or whoever owns the copyright, would celebrate the ale rather than condemn it to oblivion.

I haven't seen Bass on the shelves in years. I really enjoyed it when first became interested in beer in the early 1990s. The last time I had it about 10 years ago,it was sweet and bland, and very disappointing.

Bass will probably survive for a while, at least in Britain, under their mega brewery ownership.I always thought Pyramid was a reference to the Bass Triangle. I was wowed when I first tasted their Pale Ale brewed in Kalama, by both the ale and the distinctive, fanciful label (pyramids among the fir trees). That brand is now just hanging on under Fifco.

I know they are long hated by many, but Bass and Newcastle Brown Ale used to be to two of my standby beers. I haven't seen either of them for a couple of years at least.

I did not read all the posts but YES, it is brewed at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Merrimack N.H. these days. Been doing so for several years. I live in N.H.
